Buyers pick SA-1017 Gr.911 when a Code list, an EPC specification or a mill requisition writes the ASME name. Search phrases such as SA1017GR911, SA-1017 Grade 911, SA-1017M Grade 911, P911 plate and SA387 Grade 911 Class 2 all point here.
It is not a substitute for ASME SA387 Grade 91 Class 2. That grade has no tungsten. It is not a substitute for ASTM A387 Grade 22 Class 2. That grade is 2.25Cr-1Mo.
SHH STEEL supplies this plate to fabricators in the United States, Mexico, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Weldability
SA-1017 Grade 911 is killed 9Cr-1Mo-1W-V-Nb vessel plate at 620–840 MPa. Treat welding as production welding, and as ASME Section I / Section VIII welding when the equipment is Code work.
Qualify to Section IX and the construction section named on the job. Consumables must match a P911 family. A procedure written for ASTM A387 Grade 91 Class 2 is P91, not P911. A procedure written for ASTM A387 Grade 9 Class 2 is 9Cr-1Mo without W/V/Nb. Preheat, interpass and PWHT must stay inside the qualified WPS. Grade 911 temper is already 740–780 °C; PWHT must not walk into the wrong side of Ac1. The fabricator owns the WPS. SHH STEEL can share mill heat data for that review.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Usual delivery from SHH STEEL for SA-1017 Gr.911 is normalized and tempered.
- Austenitize: 1040–1080 °C (1900–1975 °F)
- Temper for Grade 911: 740–780 °C (1365–1435 °F)
Grades 23, 92 and 122 in the same book temper at 730–800 °C. Do not use that wider band on 911 if the order cites the 911 temper table.
Annealed plate cannot be SA-1017 Grade 911.
If the vessel will see PWHT, say so. Simulated PWHT on test coupons is worth naming on P911 work. Extra simulation, 3.2 hold points or special NDE add time. Plan about two months when those extras are on the order.
The certificate lists ASME SA-1017 Grade 911 and/or ASTM A1017 Grade 911 as the order named; heat number; heat analysis including W, V, Nb and N; tensile to the 911 table; heat-treatment route and temperatures. Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. When the contract cites a Code year, SHH STEEL checks that the ASTM edition on the MTC is acceptable to that Code year.
Dimensions
Usual supply range from SHH STEEL for SA-1017 Gr.911 9Cr-1Mo-W vessel plate:
- Thickness: commonly 6 mm – 150 mm, thicker by mill agreement
- Width: 1500 mm – 4000 mm
- Length: 3000 mm – 12000 mm
Maximum thickness is limited by the ability of the composition to meet the 911 tensile table. P91 plate belongs on ASTM A387 Grade 91 Class 2. 9Cr-1Mo plate belongs on ASTM A387 Grade 9 Class 2.
Tolerances
Dimensional limits for ASME SA-1017 Grade 911 follow ASME SA-20 / ASTM A20 unless the purchase order names another table.
Typical thickness tolerance idea for SA-1017 Gr.911 (SA-20 / A20 reference)
| Nominal thickness (mm) | Usual minus (mm) | Usual plus (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 – 16 | −0.3 | +0.8 |
| 16 – 25 | −0.4 | +0.9 |
| 25 – 40 | −0.5 | +1.0 |
| 40 – 80 | −0.8 | +1.2 |
| 80 – 150 | −1.0 | +1.6 |
Width on 1500–4000 mm plate is commonly held to about ±20–25 mm unless a tighter extra is named. Length on 3000–12000 mm plate is commonly held to about +50 / 0 mm or ±25 mm by mill practice. Flatness follows SA-20 / A20 unless a tighter class is written. SHH STEEL will not assume a zero-minus extra on SA1017GR911 unless the order says so.
Supplementary Requirements
SA-1017 Grade 911 already defines chemistry, the 620–840 MPa table and N+T. Extra items still have to be written on the purchase order.
Book name. Write SA-1017 Grade 911, A1017 Grade 911, or both. If the drawing still says SA387 Grade 911 Class 2, say how the mill should print the certificate.
Code year. Name the BPVC edition so the ASTM revision on the MTC can be checked.
Heat-treatment route. Write normalized and tempered with the 911 temper band. Do not accept annealed plate.
Charpy details. Write temperature, joules, location and orientation if impact is required.
Simulated PWHT. Name hold temperature, hold time and cooling rate on the coupon.
Product analysis. Especially C, Cr, Mo, W, V, Nb, N, P and S.
Through-thickness / Z-test. Name Z15, Z25 or Z35 when needed.
NDE. SA-20 / A20 ultrasonic extras, ASTM A435 or ASTM A578 as named.
Third-party witness. EN 10204 3.2 with SGS, TÜV, BV, ABS, CCS, DNV or the inspector named.
Identification and stamping. Heat number, SA-1017 Grade 911 / A1017 Grade 911, thickness and mill logo.
Applications

Why Choose SHH STEEL
Experience on this grade is simple: print SA-1017 when the order writes SA-1017, keep tungsten on the certificate, and keep 911 away from 91. SHH STEEL as a global steel mill sourcing partner and steel manufacturer & exporter (mill-direct, China origin) prices SA-1017 Gr.911 from first-line mills, reports 9Cr-1Mo-1W-V-Nb chemistry, records N+T in the 911 temper band, and issues 3.1 as standard or 3.2 when specified.
We keep the grade on the order. SA1017GR911 is not ASME SA387 Grade 91 Class 2. SA-1017 Grade 911 is not EN 10028-2 X10CrMoVNb9-1. If the drawing says Grade 91, we will not ship 911 and call 9Cr enough.
