What is AISI 416Se Stainless Steel?

As a professional China steel mill-Direct Supply and stainless steel plate supplier, SHH STEEL is pleased to present AISI 416Se Stainless Steel Plate.

AISI 416Se is widely known and searched under many different names and designations, including AISI 416Se, UNS S41623, 416Se, 416 Se, 416Se stainless steel, free machining 416Se, selenium-bearing 416 and SUS416Se. All these names refer to the selenium-added free-machining variant of Type 410.

AISI 416Se keeps the 12% chromium martensitic base of A240 410, but selenium is added (typically 0.15% minimum) to improve chip breaking and machining speed. It is the companion grade to sulfur-bearing AISI 416 (UNS S41600). Both are designed for high-volume turning, drilling and screw-machine work, and both can still be hardened by quench and temper.

The grade remains magnetic. Selenium inclusions improve machinability, but they also reduce corrosion resistance, weldability and toughness compared with standard 410. AISI 416Se is most common as bar and machined parts; plate and sheet can be supplied when the drawing specifies UNS S41623 in flat form.

SHH STEEL supplies AISI 416Se as true China steel mill-Direct Supply, sourcing directly from major Chinese stainless steel mills. This model delivers competitive mill pricing, consistent quality, complete heat traceability and reliable delivery.

AISI 416Se is frequently compared with A240 410, A240 410S, A240 430, A240 429, A240 409 and a240 304. SHH STEEL provides technical support to help customers choose the most appropriate grade.

Chemical Composition

Typical Chemical Composition of AISI 416Se (UNS S41623):

ElementContent (%)
Carbon (C)≤ 0.15
Silicon (Si)≤ 1.00
Manganese (Mn)≤ 1.25
Phosphorus (P)≤ 0.060
Sulfur (S)≤ 0.060
Selenium (Se)≥ 0.15
Chromium (Cr)12.00 – 14.00
Molybdenum (Mo)≤ 0.60
Nickel (Ni)≤ 0.75
Iron (Fe)Balance

The defining feature of AISI 416Se is the selenium addition in a 410-type martensitic base. Selenium forms inclusions that break chips and improve tool life during high-speed machining. Unlike AISI 416, which relies on sulfur, 416Se uses selenium as the primary free-machining element. Carbon remains high enough for hardening. SHH STEEL carefully controls selenium so machinability is consistent.

Mechanical Properties

Annealed Condition (typical values)

PropertyValue
Tensile Strength≥ 450 MPa
Yield Strength (0.2%)≥ 205 MPa
Elongation (in 50 mm)≥ 20%
Hardness≤ 262 HBW annealed typical

After quench and temper, AISI 416Se can reach high hardness similar to Type 410, but toughness is lower because of free-machining inclusions. SHH STEEL normally supplies material in the annealed condition unless a hardened-and-tempered condition is specified.

Physical Properties
Density is approximately 7.75 g/cm³. Melting range is approximately 1480–1530°C. The grade is magnetic in all common heat-treated conditions.

AISI 416Se is selected when the drawing specifically requires a selenium-bearing free-machining 410 grade. If the specification only says “free machining 410/416” without naming selenium, SHH STEEL will confirm whether 416 or 416Se is required. For formed or welded plate, A240 410 or A240 410S is preferred.

Corrosion Resistance

AISI 416Se has useful resistance to mild atmospheres, fresh water and many household or petroleum environments, similar in principle to Type 410. Selenium inclusions reduce resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, so 416Se is not the first choice for wet chloride service.

Best corrosion performance is obtained after heat treatment with a clean, passive surface. For better corrosion resistance, SHH STEEL recommends A240 410 or a240 304.

Weldability

AISI 416Se has poor weldability. Selenium inclusions increase the risk of weld defects, and the heat-affected zone can still air-harden. Welding is generally avoided.

If the part must be both machined and welded, SHH STEEL often recommends machining from 416Se bar and using A240 410 or A240 410S for welded sections.

Heat Treatment

AISI 416Se is normally supplied in the annealed condition by SHH STEEL and can be hardened by quench and temper.

Typical hardening is performed from about 925–1010°C, followed by oil or air cooling and tempering to the required hardness. Free-machining inclusions reduce toughness at a given hardness compared with 410. SHH STEEL can supply annealed material or discuss hardened-and-tempered supply when the drawing requires it.

SHH STEEL supplies AISI 416Se in the finish required by the machining or fabrication drawing.

Tolerances

Dimensional tolerances for AISI 416Se plate supplied by SHH STEEL generally conform to ASTM A480 practices. Bar products follow the applicable bar standard.

Typical plate size range is thickness 1 mm – 50 mm, width up to 1500–2000 mm, and length up to 6000 mm or cut-to-length. SHH STEEL can support tighter machining allowances when required.

FAQ

What are the other common names for AISI 416Se?
AISI 416Se is also known as UNS S41623, 416 Se, free machining 416Se and SUS416Se. SHH STEEL can certify the required designation.
What is the difference between AISI 416Se and AISI 416?
Both are free-machining 12% Cr martensitic grades. 416Se uses selenium; 416 uses sulfur. SHH STEEL supplies the exact grade named on the purchase order.
Can AISI 416Se be hardened?
Yes. It remains a martensitic grade and can be quenched and tempered. SHH STEEL normally supplies annealed material unless a hardened condition is specified.
Is AISI 416Se magnetic?
Yes. It is magnetic in both the annealed and hardened conditions.
What is the density of AISI 416Se?
Approximately 7.75 g/cm³. SHH STEEL provides mill certificates confirming chemistry and mechanical properties.
Can AISI 416Se be welded easily?
No. Selenium makes welding difficult. SHH STEEL recommends 410 or 410S when welding is required.
Does SHH STEEL supply dual-certified AISI 416Se / UNS S41623 material?
Yes, SHH STEEL commonly supplies dual-certified material upon request.

Conclusion

AISI 416Se Stainless Steel Plate is the selenium-bearing free-machining variant of Type 410. It is chosen for high-speed turning, drilling and screw-machine work when the specification requires UNS S41623 rather than sulfur-bearing 416, and the finished part may also need hardening. For formed, welded or higher-corrosion plate, standard AISI 410 or 410S remains the better choice.
