General Description
As a professional China steel mill-Direct Supply and stainless steel plate supplier, SHH STEEL is pleased to present AISI 416 Stainless Steel Plate.
AISI 416 is widely known and searched under many different names and designations, including AISI 416, UNS S41600, 416 stainless steel, 416 stainless steel plate, free machining 410, SUS416, 1.4005, X12CrS13 and sulfur-bearing 410. All these names refer to the free-machining martensitic variant of Type 410.
AISI 416 keeps the 12% chromium martensitic base of A240 410, but sulfur is raised (typically 0.15% minimum) to form manganese sulfides that break chips and raise machining speed. The grade remains magnetic and can still be hardened by quench and temper. The selenium-bearing companion grade is AISI 416Se (UNS S41623).
Because sulfur improves machinability, AISI 416 has lower corrosion resistance, weldability and toughness than standard 410. It is most common as bar, rod and screw-machine parts; plate and sheet can be supplied when the drawing specifies UNS S41600 in flat form.
SHH STEEL supplies AISI 416 as true China steel mill-Direct Supply, sourcing directly from major Chinese stainless steel mills. This model delivers competitive mill pricing, consistent quality, complete heat traceability and reliable delivery.
AISI 416 is frequently compared with A240 410, A240 410S, A240 430, A240 409, A240 429 and a240 304. SHH STEEL provides technical support to help customers choose the most appropriate grade.

Chemical Composition
Typical Chemical Composition of AISI 416 (UNS S41600):
| Element | Content (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.15 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 1.00 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 1.25 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.060 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≥ 0.15 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 12.00 – 14.00 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | ≤ 0.60 |
| Nickel (Ni) | ≤ 0.75 |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance |
The defining feature of AISI 416 is the high sulfur content in a 410-type martensitic base. Manganese sulfides act as chip breakers and lubricate the cutting tool. Carbon remains high enough for hardening. SHH STEEL carefully controls sulfur so machinability is consistent.
Mechanical Properties
Annealed Condition (typical values)
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | ≥ 450 MPa |
| Yield Strength (0.2%) | ≥ 205 MPa |
| Elongation (in 50 mm) | ≥ 20% |
| Hardness | ≤ 262 HBW annealed typical |
After quench and temper, AISI 416 can reach high hardness similar to Type 410, but toughness is lower because of sulfide inclusions. SHH STEEL normally supplies material in the annealed condition unless a hardened-and-tempered condition is specified.
Physical Properties
Density is approximately 7.75 g/cm³. Melting range is approximately 1480–1530°C. The grade is magnetic in all common heat-treated conditions.
Material Comparison
| Grade | UNS | Free Machining | Hardenable | Corrosion vs 410 | Typical Preference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AISI 410 | S41000 | No | Yes | Baseline | General heat-treated 12% Cr parts |
| AISI 416 | S41600 | Yes (sulfur) | Yes | Slightly lower | High-speed machining + hardening |
| AISI 416Se | S41623 | Yes (selenium) | Yes | Slightly lower | Screw-machine martensitic parts |
| AISI 410S | S41008 | No | Limited | Similar | Welded 12% Cr constructions |
| AISI 430F | S43020 | Yes (ferritic) | No | Different family | Free-machining ferritic parts |
| AISI 303 | S30300 | Yes (austenitic) | No | Different family | Free-machining 300-series |
AISI 416 is selected only when machining productivity and later hardening are both required. For formed or welded plate, SHH STEEL recommends A240 410 or A240 410S.
Corrosion Resistance
AISI 416 has useful resistance to mild atmospheres, fresh water and many household or petroleum environments, similar in principle to Type 410. Sulfide inclusions reduce resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, so 416 is not the first choice for wet chloride service.
Best corrosion performance is obtained after heat treatment with a clean, passive surface. For better corrosion resistance, SHH STEEL recommends A240 410 or a240 304.
Weldability
AISI 416 has poor weldability. Sulfur increases the risk of hot cracking, and the heat-affected zone can still air-harden. Welding is generally avoided.
If the part must be both machined and welded, SHH STEEL often recommends machining from 416 bar and using A240 410 or A240 410S for welded sections.
Heat Treatment
AISI 416 is normally supplied in the annealed condition by SHH STEEL and can be hardened by quench and temper.
Typical hardening is performed from about 925–1010°C, followed by oil or air cooling and tempering to the required hardness. Sulfide inclusions reduce toughness at a given hardness compared with 410. SHH STEEL can supply annealed material or discuss hardened-and-tempered supply when the drawing requires it.
Surface Finishes
| Finish | Description | Typical Use / Keywords |
|---|---|---|
| No.1 | Hot-rolled, annealed and pickled | AISI 416 No.1 – industrial plate |
| 2B | Cold-rolled, annealed, pickled, skin-passed | AISI 416 2B – thin plate / sheet |
| Peeled / Turned | Machined bar surface | AISI 416 bar for screw-machine work |
| Special | Ground or custom finishes | AISI 416 Special – on request |
SHH STEEL supplies AISI 416 in the finish required by the machining or fabrication drawing.
Tolerances
Dimensional tolerances for AISI 416 plate supplied by SHH STEEL generally conform to ASTM A480 practices. Bar products follow the applicable bar standard.
Typical plate size range is thickness 1 mm – 50 mm, width up to 1500–2000 mm, and length up to 6000 mm or cut-to-length. SHH STEEL can support tighter machining allowances when required.

FAQ
- What are the other common names for AISI 416?AISI 416 is also known as UNS S41600, free machining 410, SUS416, 1.4005 and X12CrS13. SHH STEEL can certify the required designation.
- What is the difference between AISI 416 and AISI 410?AISI 416 contains added sulfur for much better machinability. Standard 410 has better corrosion resistance, weldability and toughness. SHH STEEL recommends 416 only when machining is the main requirement.
- Can AISI 416 be hardened?Yes. It remains a martensitic grade and can be quenched and tempered. SHH STEEL normally supplies annealed material unless a hardened condition is specified.
- Is AISI 416 magnetic?es. It is magnetic in both the annealed and hardened conditions.
- What is the density of AISI 416?Approximately 7.75 g/cm³. SHH STEEL provides mill certificates confirming chemistry and mechanical properties.
- Can AISI 416 be welded easily? No. Sulfur makes welding difficult. SHH STEEL recommends 410 or 410S when welding is required.
- Does SHH STEEL supply dual-certified AISI 416 / UNS S41600 material?Yes, SHH STEEL commonly supplies dual-certified material upon request.
Conclusion
AISI 416 Stainless Steel Plate is the free-machining sulfur-bearing variant of Type 410. It is chosen for high-speed turning, drilling and screw-machine work when the finished part must also be hardened. For formed, welded or higher-corrosion plate, standard AISI 410 or 410S remains the better choice.
