What is AISI 434 Stainless Steel ?

As a professional China steel mill-Direct Supply and stainless steel plate supplier, SHH STEEL is pleased to present AISI 434 Stainless Steel Plate.

AISI 434 is widely known and searched under many different names and designations, including AISI 434, ASTM A240 Type 434, ASME SA240 Type 434, UNS S43400, 434 stainless steel, 434 stainless steel plate, SUS434, 1.4113 and X6CrMo17-1. All these names refer to the same molybdenum-bearing ferritic stainless steel based on Type 430.

AISI 434 contains 16.0–18.0% chromium plus 0.75–1.25% molybdenum. Molybdenum improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing atmospheres compared with standard A240 430. The grade remains magnetic, non-hardenable by conventional quench and temper, and is normally supplied annealed.

Typical uses include automotive trim and moldings, decorative components exposed to road salt, appliance parts and general ferritic fabrications that need better pitting resistance than 430 without moving to austenitic 304/316.

SHH STEEL supplies AISI 434 as true China steel mill-Direct Supply, sourcing directly from major Chinese stainless steel mills. This model delivers competitive mill pricing, consistent quality, complete heat traceability and reliable delivery. SHH STEEL offers AISI 434 in plate and sheet form across a practical range of thicknesses and surface finishes.

AISI 434 is frequently compared with A240 430, A240 436, A240 439, A240 444, A240 429 and a240 304. SHH STEEL provides technical support to help customers choose the most appropriate 400-series grade.

Chemical Composition

Typical Chemical Composition of AISI 434 (UNS S43400):

ElementContent (%)
Carbon (C)≤ 0.12
Silicon (Si)≤ 1.00
Manganese (Mn)≤ 1.00
Phosphorus (P)≤ 0.040
Sulfur (S)≤ 0.030
Chromium (Cr)16.00 – 18.00
Molybdenum (Mo)0.75 – 1.25
Nickel (Ni)≤ 0.75
Iron (Fe)Balance

The defining feature of AISI 434 is the molybdenum addition in a 430-type ferritic base. Molybdenum raises pitting resistance in road-salt and mild chloride atmospheres. SHH STEEL carefully controls chromium and molybdenum to keep AISI 434 consistent for automotive trim and decorative fabrication.

Mechanical Properties

Annealed Condition (typical ASTM A240 values)

Tensile Strength≥ 450 MPa (65 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2%)≥ 205 MPa (30 ksi)
Elongation (in 50 mm)≥ 22%

AISI 434 is supplied annealed, with strength and ductility similar to Type 430. It is magnetic and cannot be hardened by conventional quench and temper. SHH STEEL supplies AISI 434 meeting A240 mechanical limits.

Physical Properties
Density is approximately 7.70–7.80 g/cm³. Melting range is approximately 1425–1510°C.

Material Comparison

AISI 444S44400Higher Mo + Ti/NbMuch betterWater tanks / higher chloride ferritic
AISI 304S30400AusteniticBetter overallGeneral corrosion / outdoor service

AISI 434 is selected when standard A240 430 is not sufficient against road salt or mild chlorides. For even better formability in automotive trim, compare with A240 436. For higher chloride ferritic service, SHH STEEL recommends A240 444.

Corrosion Resistance

AISI 434 offers good resistance to atmosphere, fresh water and many household environments, plus improved pitting resistance versus 430 because of molybdenum. That is why it is widely used for automotive exterior trim exposed to de-icing salts.

It is still a ferritic grade and is not equivalent to a240 304 or a240 316l in aggressive chloride or acid service. For water-heater tanks and more severe ferritic chloride duty, SHH STEEL recommends A240 444.

Weldability

AISI 434 can be welded by standard fusion methods. Matching 430/434 or 439-type filler metals are commonly used. As with other ferritic grades, heat input should be controlled to limit grain growth in the heat-affected zone.

For critical welded high-temperature ferritic fabrications, SHH STEEL often recommends titanium-stabilized A240 439. Proper welding procedures and post-weld cleaning are required to restore corrosion resistance.

Heat Treatment

AISI 434 is normally supplied in the annealed condition by SHH STEEL.

Annealing restores ductility after cold forming and optimizes corrosion resistance. The grade cannot be hardened by conventional quench and temper. SHH STEEL controls heat treatment so AISI 434 remains formable, polishable and weldable.

SHH STEEL regularly supplies AISI 434 in 2B, BA and No.4 finishes for trim and decorative applications.

Tolerances

Dimensional tolerances for AISI 434 Stainless Steel Plate supplied by SHH STEEL generally conform to ASTM A480 practices.

Typical available size range is thickness 0.3 mm – 50 mm, width up to 1500–2000 mm, and length up to 6000–12000 mm or coil/cut-to-length. SHH STEEL provides precise dimensional control and can support tighter tolerances when required.

FAQ

What are the other common names for AISI 434?
AISI 434 is also known as ASTM A240 Type 434, UNS S43400, SUS434, 1.4113 and X6CrMo17-1. SHH STEEL can certify the required designation.
What is the difference between AISI 434 and AISI 430?
AISI 434 contains 0.75–1.25% molybdenum, which improves pitting resistance in road-salt and mild chloride atmospheres. SHH STEEL recommends 434 when 430 is not sufficient.
What is the difference between AISI 434 and AISI 436?
Both contain molybdenum. 436 also contains niobium to improve formability and reduce ridging in automotive stampings. SHH STEEL can supply the grade specified on the drawing.
Is AISI 434 magnetic?
Yes. AISI 434 is ferritic and remains magnetic in the annealed condition.
What is the density of AISI 434?
Approximately 7.70–7.80 g/cm³. SHH STEEL provides mill certificates confirming chemistry and mechanical properties.
Can AISI 434 replace 304 or 316L?
Only in mild to moderate chloride atmospheres. 304 and 316L offer better overall corrosion resistance. SHH STEEL recommends austenitic grades when outdoor marine or process-chloride service is required.
Does SHH STEEL supply dual-certified ASTM A240 Type 434 / AISI 434 material?
Yes, SHH STEEL commonly supplies dual-certified material upon request.

Conclusion

AISI 434 Stainless Steel Plate is a molybdenum-bearing 16–18% chromium ferritic grade designed to outperform standard 430 in pitting resistance. It is a practical choice for automotive trim, decorative components and mildly chloride-exposed fabrications where a magnetic 400-series material is preferred.
