The defining feature of AISI 410S is extra-low carbon in a 12% chromium base. Lower carbon reduces martensite formation during cooling after welding, so the heat-affected zone stays much softer than in standard 410. AISI 410S is selected when a 12% Cr plate must be welded without the hardening problem of A240 410. Compared with A240 409, 410S has higher chromium and no titanium requirement. For better atmospheric corrosion resistance, SHH STEEL recommends A240 430 or A240 439.
Corrosion Resistance
AISI 410S offers moderate corrosion resistance similar to other 12% chromium stainless steels. It performs well in mild atmospheres, steam, petroleum refining and many heat-treatment environments. Low carbon improves the corrosion behavior of welded joints compared with standard 410.
It is not a substitute for austenitic grades such as a240 304 or a240 316l in chloride or acid service. For higher chromium ferritic resistance, compare with A240 430 or A240 429.
Weldability
AISI 410S has much better weldability than Type 410 because carbon is limited to 0.08%. Matching 410S or appropriate 410/430-type filler metals are commonly used.
Preheat and post-weld heat treatment depend on thickness and restraint, but the risk of a hard, brittle heat-affected zone is significantly lower than with standard 410. SHH STEEL recommends proper welding procedures and post-weld cleaning.
Heat Treatment
AISI 410S is normally supplied in the annealed condition by SHH STEEL.
