AISI 430 is the standard ferritic choice for cost-effective corrosion resistance and appearance. When molybdenum is needed for better pitting resistance, SHH STEEL recommends A240 434 or A240 444. For welded high-temperature ferritic service, compare with A240 439.
Corrosion Resistance
AISI 430 offers good resistance to atmosphere, fresh water, nitric acid, many food products and household chemicals. It is widely used for indoor architectural and appliance surfaces because it polishes well and resists fingerprint staining better than carbon steel.
In chlorides, coastal atmospheres or strong reducing acids, AISI 430 can suffer pitting or rust staining. For those conditions SHH STEEL recommends a240 304, a240 316l, A240 434 or A240 444.
Weldability
AISI 430 can be welded by standard fusion methods. Matching 430 or 439-type filler metals are commonly used. As with other ferritic grades, heat input should be controlled to limit grain growth in the heat-affected zone.
Heavy welded sections may lose toughness if overheated. For critical welded fabrications, SHH STEEL often recommends titanium-stabilized A240 439. Proper welding procedures and post-weld cleaning are required to restore corrosion resistance.
Heat Treatment
AISI 430 is normally supplied in the annealed condition by SHH STEEL.
