1.4571 stainless steel plate: product overview and SHH STEEL sourcing

EN 10088-2 X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2 1.4571 stainless steel plate is a titanium-stabilised austenitic flat product supplied to EN 10088-2, the European standard for stainless steel sheet, plate and strip for general purposes. X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2 contains up to 0.08 % carbon, 16.5 – 18.5 % chromium, 10.5 – 13.5 % nickel, 2.00 – 2.50 % molybdenum and titanium from 5 × C up to 0.70 %. The titanium binds carbon as titanium carbide, so chromium carbides do not form at the grain boundaries during welding, and Table 7 rates the steel resistant to intergranular corrosion both as delivered and after sensitization. EN 10088-2 lists 1.4571 as a standard grade, as cold rolled strip up to 8 mm, continuously hot rolled strip up to 13.5 mm and hot rolled plate up to 75 mm, solution annealed, and as 2H material at +C700 and +C850.

SHH STEEL works as a steel sourcing partner with long-term relationships with Chinese stainless mills that roll austenitic CrNiMo hot rolled plate, coil and cold rolled sheet. For large tonnages, the buyer can contract directly with a suitable mill, with SHH STEEL assisting for a modest service fee and handling follow-up and documents. For small orders we consolidate demand, so that 1 – 5 t lots are placed against genuine mill production instead of stock of unknown origin. Each shipment can be released after third-party inspection by TUV, ABS, BV, DNV, CCS or an agency the buyer nominates, and payment by TT or LC is accepted. The rest of this page covers the technical side of EN 10088-2 1.4571 and the steps we take so that the sheet that arrives is the sheet that was ordered.

The table below lists the concerns buyers raise most often when sourcing EN 10088-2 X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2 sheet and plate from China, and how SHH STEEL deals with each of them.

Buyer ConcernSHH STEEL Solution
Fake material or certificates1.4571 can be swapped with 1.4401, which looks identical but has no titanium; titanium and carbon are checked by OES so that the 5 × C minimum can be confirmed, and molybdenum by XRF. Partner laboratories handle chemical analysis, tensile, impact and IGC testing, and 3.2 certificates with third-party witness are available.
Unsafe depositPayment by TT, LC or a TT + LC combination. For large chemical or petrochemical projects the buyer can contract directly with the mill, with SHH STEEL assisting for a small service fee.
Quantity below mill minimumThick 1.4571 plate or a particular sheet size is often needed in small lots. SHH STEEL consolidates orders so 1 – 5 t lots can join a mill rolling campaign.
Delivery delaysA dedicated person follows up the delivery schedule with the mill and reports progress at rolling, annealing, pickling, testing and packing.
Fabrication needsOur workshop provides plasma and laser cutting, sawing, slitting and bending, with protective film for visible surfaces.

EN 10088-2 vs EN 10028-7 and ASTM A240: standard selection for X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2 plate

1.4571 is the EN counterpart of UNS S31635, Type 316Ti, in ASTM A240 (see ASTM A240 Type 316Ti sheet and plate). For pressure equipment it is ordered to EN 10028-7; see EN 10028-7 1.4571 pressure vessel plate.

ItemEN 10088-2 1.4571ASTM A240-22 S31635 (316Ti)JIS SUS316Ti
Carbon≤ 0.08 %≤ 0.08 %≤ 0.08 %
Nickel10.5 – 13.5 %10.0 – 14.0 %10.00 – 14.00 %

Titanium5 × C to 0.70 %5 × (C + N) min, 0.70 max≥ 5 × C
Nitrogennot specified≤ 0.10 %not specified

The main difference is the titanium minimum: ASTM A240-22 bases it on carbon plus nitrogen, EN 10088-2 on carbon only. A heat with enough titanium for the ASTM rule, chromium of 16.5 – 18.0 %, molybdenum at most 2.50 % and silicon at most 0.75 % can meet both. SHH STEEL checks the titanium calculation when a buyer needs dual certification.

1.4571 is also listed in EN 10028-7:2016 for pressure purposes. That standard may set its own test and property requirements, which we have not reproduced here.

1.4571 chemical composition: heat analysis and product analysis tolerances

The 1.4571 chemical composition below is the cast (heat) analysis from EN 10088-2:2014 Table 1. Values are percentages by mass; a single figure is a maximum.

CSiMnPSCrMoNiTi
0.081.002.000.0450.01516.5 – 18.52.00 – 2.5010.5 – 13.55 × C – 0.70

The 1.4571 titanium content of at least five times the carbon is what stabilises the steel; EN 10088-2 sets no nitrogen limit for this grade. Footnote b to Table 1 permits controlled sulphur ranges: 0.015 – 0.030 % for machinability, 0.008 – 0.015 % for weldability, and 0.015 % max. for polishability. SHH STEEL checks carbon, titanium and molybdenum on every certificate as part of the 1.4571 chemical composition review.

Product analysis tolerances (EN 10088-2 Table 5)

A product analysis is a check made on the delivered sheet. It is not mandatory under EN 10088-2; it is carried out when agreed at the time of enquiry and order, and SHH STEEL can arrange it through a partner laboratory. The permissible tolerances on the cast limits are:

ElementCast limit, %Permissible tolerance, %Product analysis limit, %
C≤ 0.08± 0.01≤ 0.09
Si≤ 1.00+ 0.05≤ 1.05
Mn≤ 2.00± 0.04≤ 2.04

Ni10.5 – 13.5± 0.1510.35 – 13.65
Ti5 × C – 0.70+ 0.055 × C – 0.75

Where several product analyses are made on one cast, individual results may exceed the maximum or fall below the minimum, but not both for the same element. If a product analysis is required, it should be stated in the order together with the Table 5 tolerances.

1.4571 mechanical properties: solution annealed and cold worked (2H)

The 1.4571 mechanical properties below are the room-temperature values from EN 10088-2:2014 Table 7 for austenitic steels in the solution annealed condition. Test pieces are transverse; the A80 elongation applies below 3 mm and the proportional elongation A from 3 mm.

P – hot rolled plate75220260520 – 6704040100 / 60

Rp1.0 values are for guidance only. For continuously hot rolled products, 20 MPa higher minimum Rp0.2 and 10 MPa higher Rp1.0 may be agreed. For strip in rolling widths below 300 mm tested longitudinally, the minimum proof strength is reduced by 15 MPa and elongation by 5 % (constant gauge) or 2 % (proportional gauge). For bigger sizes than those listed, mechanical values are to be agreed.

Table 7 rates 1.4571 resistance to intergranular corrosion (EN ISO 3651-2) as “yes” in both the delivery condition and the sensitized condition.

Cold worked condition (process route 2H)

EN 10088-2 Table 17 defines the tensile strength levels for the cold worked condition (process route 2H): +C700 = 700 – 850 MPa, +C850 = 850 – 1 000 MPa, +C1000 = 1 000 – 1 150 MPa, +C1150 = 1 150 – 1 300 MPa and +C1300 = 1 300 – 1 500 MPa. Table 18 defines 0.2 % proof strength levels: +CP350 = 350 – 500 MPa, +CP500 = 500 – 700 MPa, +CP700 = 700 – 900 MPa, +CP900 = 900 – 1 100 MPa and +CP1100 = 1 100 – 1 300 MPa. Intermediate values may be agreed. The steel may be specified by tensile strength, by proof strength or by hardness, but only one parameter in the order. The maximum thickness for each level decreases as the strength rises, and remaining elongation depends on the work-hardening behaviour, so more exact information should be requested from the mill.

EN 10088-2 Table 12 gives values from 100 °C to 550 °C for this grade, for the solution annealed condition (+AT). They are minimum values for design and are not tested unless agreed.

Heat treatment of X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2: solution annealing

EN 10088-2 Table A.1 gives the following guideline temperatures for 1.4571:

OperationTemperature, °CCooling
Hot forming1 150 – 850Air
Solution annealing (+AT)1 030 – 1 110Water or air, sufficiently rapid to avoid intergranular corrosion

The footnotes to Table A.1 state that with a continuous furnace the upper part of the range is usually preferred or even exceeded, and that the lower end of the range should be aimed at when the heat treatment is part of further processing, because otherwise the mechanical properties may be affected. Solution annealing may be omitted if hot working and cooling achieve the required mechanical properties and resistance to intergranular corrosion.

The Euro Inox tables give the same 1 030 – 1 110 °C range with cooling in air or water. Annealed material is delivered as +AT; 2H material at the ordered level. We check the condition on each certificate.

Physical properties of 1.4571 austenitic plate

The values below are approximate reference figures for X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2 at room temperature, from the worldstainless “Tables of Technical Properties”, which follow EN 10088-1. They are suitable for design estimates and weight calculation; where a figure is critical, use EN 10088-1 itself.

Specific heat at 20 °Cabout 500 J/(kg·K)
Electrical resistivity at 20 °C0.75 Ω·mm²/m
Magnetic behaviourNot magnetisable in the solution annealed condition (EN 10088-1)

The EN 10088-1 table as reproduced by Häuselmann lists 1.4571 as not magnetisable, with a modulus of 200 GPa at 20 °C falling to 186 GPa at 200 °C and an electrical resistivity of 0.75 Ω·mm²/m. Both that table and worldstainless give 1.4571 a slightly higher thermal expansion (17.5 × 10⁻⁶ /K from 20 to 200 °C) than 1.4401 and 1.4404 (16.5 × 10⁻⁶ /K).

Corrosion behaviour of X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2 1.4571

The Euro Inox fabrication tables describe 1.4571 as having good corrosion resistance and as resistant to intergranular corrosion. EN 10088-2 Table 7 rates its resistance to intergranular corrosion, tested to EN ISO 3651-2, as “yes” in the delivery condition and “yes” in the sensitized condition, which comes from titanium stabilisation rather than a low carbon limit. Its chromium and molybdenum ranges are the same as those of 1.4401.

EnvironmentTypical behaviour
Chemical and petrochemical industryListed end use (Euro Inox)
Cellulose production, textile finishingListed end use (Euro Inox)
Water and food technologyListed end use (Euro Inox)
Intergranular corrosion, sensitizedResistant (Table 7: yes)
Seawater and warm chloridesCheck case by case; higher-Mo or duplex grades may be needed

The CrNi counterpart without molybdenum is EN 10088-2 1.4541 plate; the low-carbon alternative that reaches intergranular corrosion resistance without titanium is 1.4404.

As EN 10088-2 notes, corrosion resistance depends strongly on the environment and cannot always be judged from laboratory tests, so experience with the grade in similar service should be used.

Weldability of 1.4571 austenitic plate: SHH STEEL workshop practice

1.4571 is readily weldable by the common arc and resistance processes, and titanium stabilisation keeps the heat-affected zone resistant to intergranular corrosion.

  • The Euro Inox fabrication tables rate TIG/MIG, manual metal arc and resistance welding as suitable for 1.4571, and autogenous welding as suitable with restrictions.
  • Filler materials listed are 1.4430 and 1.4576. 1.4576 is a niobium-stabilised molybdenum filler.
  • EN 10088-2 Table 7 rates 1.4571 “yes” for intergranular corrosion after sensitization.
  • EN 10088-2 does not specify welding procedures; these are published guidelines and general practice.

These points reflect industry practice for austenitic CrNiMo stainless steels rather than requirements of EN 10088-2, which does not specify welding procedures. In the SHH STEEL workshop, blanks and slit strips are cut with clean, burr-free edges so that seam, spot and tube welding run without edge preparation problems.

Forming, cold working and cutting of X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2 in the SHH STEEL workshop

Annealed 1.4571 forms well with standard austenitic practice and work-hardens during forming, so forming forces are higher than for carbon steel and springback should be allowed for. 2H material needs larger bend radii.

Thick plate is cut by plasma or waterjet, and sheet by laser or shearing. Machining needs sharp tools and positive feeds to avoid work hardening at the cut.

We run our own workshop next to the warehouse, so 1.4571 hot rolled plate and X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2 plate blanks can be delivered cut to size, laser-cut or bent. Details are on our steel cutting services and bending and forming services pages.

1.4571 plate sizes, thickness limits and tolerances

1.4571 is listed in EN 10088-2 as cold rolled strip (annealed or 2H), continuously hot rolled strip and hot rolled plate.

Product formThickness range covered by EN 10088-2Typical width supplied (by mill)Tolerance standard
C – cold rolled strip and sheetup to 8 mmconfirmed at enquiryEN ISO 9445-1 / EN ISO 9445-2
H – continuously hot rolled strip and plateup to 13.5 mmconfirmed at enquiryEN ISO 9444-2
P – hot rolled (quarto) plateup to 75 mm in Table 7; thicker plate by agreementconfirmed at enquiryEN ISO 18286

EN 10088-2 Table 7 gives mechanical values for hot rolled plate up to 75 mm; for bigger sizes the mechanical values shall be agreed at the time of enquiry and order. Under section 6.9 of the standard, EN ISO 18286 normally applies only to individually rolled quarto plate, while continuously rolled material follows EN ISO 9444-2.

SHH STEEL can supply 1.4571 hot rolled plate and coil, and 1.4571 cold rolled sheet and coil, in standard sizes or cut to your drawing.

Surface finishes for EN 10088-2 X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2 plate

Surface finish is ordered by the process route symbols of EN 10088-2 Table 6; trade names from ASTM and JIS are shown for reference. Not every route is available for every grade, and the mill confirms which ones it can supply.

EN symbolDescriptionCommon trade nameUse for 1.4571
1DHot rolled, heat treated, pickledNo.1Hot rolled plate and strip; usual standard for most steel types
1EHot rolled, heat treated, mechanically descaled—Plate for further processing
2DCold rolled, heat treated, pickledNo.2DFormed parts; good ductility
2BCold rolled, heat treated, pickled, skin passed2BGeneral cold rolled supply

2HWork hardened, brightTemper rolledHigher strength levels +C700 to +C1300
1J / 2JBrushed or dull polishedNo.4Visible panels; grit or roughness to be agreed

The No.1, No.4 and BA cross-references follow worldstainless and IMOA comparison tables; EN 10088-2 itself defines only the EN symbols, and not every route is available for every grade. Special finishes such as 1J and 2J apply to one surface unless otherwise agreed. The Euro Inox tables rate the polishability of 1.4571 as poor. For bright decorative finishes, 1.4401 or 1.4404 is usually preferred.

1.4571 equivalent grades: ASTM, GB and JIS cross-reference

The usual 1.4571 equivalent, and the answer to most 316Ti equivalent enquiries, is UNS S31635.

SystemNearest gradeComment

Japan (JIS)JIS G4304 / G4305 SUS316TiClose; Ni 10.00 – 14.00 %, Mo 2.00 – 3.00 %, Ti ≥ 5 × C

For Chinese pressure vessels the grade is ordered as GB/T 713.7 S31668 (06Cr17Ni12Mo2Ti) pressure vessel plate. All three foreign grades allow up to 3.00 % molybdenum, while 1.4571 is capped at 2.50 %.

1.4571 vs 1.4404 and 1.4401

Compared with EN 10088-2 1.4404 plate, 1.4571 reaches resistance to intergranular corrosion by titanium stabilisation instead of low carbon, and keeps higher elevated-temperature proof strength (145 against 118 MPa Rp0.2 at 300 °C in Table 12); plate proof strength at room temperature is the same. Compared with EN 10088-2 1.4401 plate, it stays resistant to intergranular corrosion after sensitization, where 1.4401 is rated “no”.

Applications of 1.4571 austenitic plate

Typical applications of 1.4571 plate and sheet listed in the Euro Inox fabrication tables include:

  • Chemical industry equipment
  • Petrochemical and coal chemical plant
  • Cellulose production
  • Textile finishing
  • Water and food technology
  • Pressure parts (to EN 10028-7)

For pressure equipment, 1.4571 plate is ordered to EN 10028-7; for other uses, EN 10088-2 applies.

Buyers choose 1.4571 for welded molybdenum steel where elevated-temperature strength matters or a specification names it. SHH STEEL can advise when 1.4404 would be sufficient.

Common buyer concerns and our solutions

For 1.4571 the main risks are low titanium, certificates that only show ASTM limits, and polished-finish expectations.

ConcernWhat Usually HappensHow SHH STEEL Handles It
Low titaniumTi below 5 × C, so the steel is not fully stabilised.Titanium checked against carbon on each certificate.
ASTM-only certificateTi rule based on C + N not shown.Dual certification checked against both standards.
1.4401 substitutionNo titanium present.Titanium checked by OES.
Wrong standardEN 10088-2 plate is used where EN 10028-7 is required. The governing standard is confirmed before ordering.
Polishing defectsTitanium-rich inclusions mark a bright finish.1.4401 or 1.4404 suggested for decorative surfaces.

None of these steps is complicated, but they need to be agreed at the start. When you send an enquiry, tell us which of these points matters most to you, and the order will be built around it.

Testing, certificates and lead time at SHH STEEL

Every 1.4571 order is supported by documents and checks that make the material traceable to the heat:

  • Cast analysis with carbon, titanium, chromium, nickel and molybdenum checked
  • Tensile test (transverse) to Table 7, or to the ordered 2H level
  • Impact test for plate over 10 mm when agreed
  • Intergranular corrosion test to EN ISO 3651-2 when agreed
  • Thickness, flatness and surface inspection
  • Additional checks through our third-party testing service: PMI, dimensional, flatness and surface inspection

If the order does not name an inspection document, EN 10088-2 requires only a test report 2.2. Because this is rarely enough for chemical, petrochemical and food equipment or export work, SHH STEEL supplies an EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate as standard and a 3.2 certificate when an independent inspector (TUV, ABS, BV, DNV, CCS or an agency you nominate) witnesses testing and countersigns the document.

Ordering example and lead time

Following the pattern of the example in EN 10088-2, a typical order line would read: 10 plates, 10 mm × 1 500 mm × 6 000 mm, EN ISO 18286, EN 10088-2, steel X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2 (1.4571), process route 1D, inspection certificate 3.1 to EN 10204. Mill production lead time is generally 30 – 40 days from order confirmation, depending on the rolling schedule, the size and the tests requested. Consolidated small lots follow the same mill schedule, and we send progress updates at rolling, testing and packing.

FAQ

What is 1.4571 stainless steel equivalent to?
The usual equivalent is UNS S31635, Type 316Ti, in ASTM A240 and ASME SA-240. It is close but not identical: ASTM A240-22 sets the titanium minimum at five times carbon plus nitrogen, with 0.70 % maximum, while EN 10088-2 uses five times carbon only; ASTM also allows 2.00 – 3.00 % molybdenum, 10.0 – 14.0 % nickel and limits silicon to 0.75 % and nitrogen to 0.10 %. 1.4571 has 2.00 – 2.50 % molybdenum and 10.5 – 13.5 % nickel. JIS SUS316Ti and the Chinese grade 06Cr17Ni12Mo2Ti, ISC code S31668, in GB/T 20878, GB/T 4237 and GB/T 3280 use a titanium minimum of five times carbon. A heat with enough titanium for the ASTM rule can be dual certified, and SHH STEEL checks this before accepting the order.
What is the chemical composition of 1.4571?
EN 10088-2:2014 Table 1 gives a cast analysis of maximum 0.08 % carbon, 1.00 % silicon, 2.00 % manganese, 0.045 % phosphorus and 0.015 % sulphur, with 16.5 – 18.5 % chromium, 2.00 – 2.50 % molybdenum, 10.5 – 13.5 % nickel and titanium from 5 × C up to 0.70 %. No nitrogen limit is set. A footnote permits controlled sulphur ranges for machinability, weldability or polishability. If a product analysis is agreed, Table 5 allows ± 0.01 % on carbon, ± 0.20 % on chromium, ± 0.10 % on molybdenum, ± 0.15 % on nickel and + 0.05 % on titanium. The titanium-to-carbon ratio is the critical figure. SHH STEEL checks carbon, titanium and molybdenum on every mill certificate and can arrange independent laboratory analysis.
What are the mechanical properties of 1.4571 plate?
EN 10088-2:2014 Table 7 gives values for the solution annealed condition. Hot rolled plate up to 75 mm needs a minimum 0.2 % proof strength of 220 MPa, a minimum 1 % proof strength of 260 MPa for guidance, a tensile strength of 520 – 670 MPa and at least 40 % elongation. Continuously hot rolled strip up to 13.5 mm has the same proof strengths with 540 – 690 MPa, and cold rolled strip up to 8 mm needs 240 MPa. For plate over 10 mm, impact energy is at least 100 J longitudinal or 60 J transverse. Table 12 gives minimum proof strengths up to 550 °C, for example 145 MPa Rp0.2 at 300 °C. Cold worked 2H strip is available at +C700 and +C850. SHH STEEL can arrange witnessed tests for 3.2 certificates.
What is the difference between 1.4571 and 1.4404?
Both resist intergranular corrosion after welding, but by different routes. 1.4404 limits carbon to 0.030 %, so few chromium carbides can form. 1.4571 allows up to 0.08 % carbon and adds titanium of at least five times the carbon, which binds the carbon as titanium carbide. EN 10088-2 Table 7 rates both “yes” as delivered and when sensitized, and gives the same plate proof strength. The practical differences are elevated-temperature strength, where Table 12 gives 1.4571 higher values (145 against 118 MPa Rp0.2 at 300 °C), and surface finish, where the Euro Inox tables rate 1.4571 polishability as poor and 1.4404 as good. 1.4571 is also available as 2H strip. SHH STEEL can quote both grades side by side for comparison.
Can 1.4571 be welded?
Yes. 1.4571 is readily weldable, and its titanium stabilisation means EN 10088-2 Table 7 rates it resistant to intergranular corrosion both as delivered and in the sensitized condition. The Euro Inox fabrication tables rate TIG, MIG, manual metal arc and resistance welding as suitable and autogenous welding as suitable with restrictions, and list filler materials 1.4430 and 1.4576. 1.4576 is a niobium-stabilised molybdenum filler; 1.4430 is a low-carbon one. EN 10088-2 does not specify welding procedures, so the fabricator's qualified procedure governs filler choice, heat input and interpass temperature. For visible parts, the poor polishability rating should be considered before welds are dressed. SHH STEEL can supply test plates from the same heat for procedure qualification, together with the production certificates showing carbon and titanium.
What is the lead time and minimum order for 1.4571 plate and sheet?
Mill production lead time is usually 30 – 40 days from order confirmation, depending on the rolling schedule, the thickness, the finish or 2H level and the tests required. 1.4571 is a standard grade in EN 10088-2, but it needs a titanium-controlled melt, and thick plate or 2H strip may need a particular campaign, so the date and available sizes should be confirmed at enquiry. Mill minimum quantities for a dedicated rolling are often higher than a single project needs. SHH STEEL consolidates several customer orders into one mill campaign, which makes lots of 1 – 5 t practical. For larger tonnages, a buyer can contract directly with a suitable mill, with SHH STEEL assisting for a modest service fee. Workshop cutting normally adds a few days, and agreed corrosion tests can add a little more.
