1.4432 stainless steel plate: product overview and SHH STEEL sourcing

EN 10088-2 X2CrNiMo17-12-3 1.4432 stainless steel plate is a low-carbon austenitic flat product supplied to EN 10088-2, the European standard for stainless steel sheet, plate and strip for general purposes. X2CrNiMo17-12-3 contains up to 0.030 % carbon, 16.5 – 18.5 % chromium, 10.5 – 13.0 % nickel and 2.50 – 3.00 % molybdenum. It sits in the upper half of the 316L molybdenum range, while 1.4404 covers the lower half (2.00 – 2.50 %), so it is the EN grade to order when a minimum of 2.5 % molybdenum is required. EN 10088-2 lists 1.4432 as cold rolled strip up to 8 mm, continuously hot rolled strip up to 13.5 mm and hot rolled plate up to 75 mm, solution annealed. Table 7 rates it resistant to intergranular corrosion both as delivered and after sensitization.

SHH STEEL works as a steel sourcing partner with long-term relationships with Chinese stainless mills that roll austenitic CrNiMo hot rolled plate, coil and cold rolled sheet. For large tonnages, the buyer can contract directly with a suitable mill, with SHH STEEL assisting for a modest service fee and handling follow-up and documents. For small orders we consolidate demand, so that 1 – 5 t lots are placed against genuine mill production instead of stock of unknown origin. Each shipment can be released after third-party inspection by TUV, ABS, BV, DNV, CCS or an agency the buyer nominates, and payment by TT or LC is accepted. The rest of this page covers the technical side of EN 10088-2 1.4432 and the steps we take so that the sheet that arrives is the sheet that was ordered.

The table below lists the concerns buyers raise most often when sourcing EN 10088-2 X2CrNiMo17-12-3 sheet and plate from China, and how SHH STEEL deals with each of them.

Buyer ConcernSHH STEEL Solution
Fake material or certificates1.4432 is sometimes replaced by 1.4404 with molybdenum below 2.50 %; molybdenum is checked by XRF or OES and carbon by spark OES. Partner laboratories handle chemical analysis, tensile, impact and IGC testing, and 3.2 certificates with third-party witness are available.
Unsafe depositPayment by TT, LC or a TT + LC combination. For large water or cladding projects the buyer can contract directly with the mill, with SHH STEEL assisting for a small service fee.
Quantity below mill minimumThick 1.4432 plate or a particular sheet size and finish is often needed in small lots. SHH STEEL consolidates orders so 1 – 5 t lots can join a mill rolling campaign.
Delivery delaysA dedicated person follows up the delivery schedule with the mill and reports progress at rolling, annealing, pickling, testing and packing.

EN 10088-2 vs EN 10028-7 and ASTM A240: standard selection for X2CrNiMo17-12-3 plate

1.4432 falls within the UNS S31603, Type 316L, limits in ASTM A240 (see ASTM A240 Type 316L sheet and plate) for molybdenum and nickel. For pressure equipment it is ordered to EN 10028-7; see EN 10028-7 1.4432 pressure vessel plate.

ItemEN 10088-2 1.4432ASTM A240-22 S31603 (316L)JIS SUS316L

Molybdenum2.50 – 3.00 %2.00 – 3.00 %2.00 – 3.00 %
Silicon≤ 1.00 %≤ 0.75 %≤ 1.00 %

A heat can meet both 1.4432 and S31603 if chromium is 16.5 – 18.0 % and silicon at most 0.75 %; the molybdenum and nickel ranges of 1.4432 lie inside the ASTM ranges. The reverse is not true: a 316L heat with 2.00 – 2.49 % molybdenum does not meet 1.4432. SHH STEEL checks these overlaps when a buyer needs dual certification.

1.4432 is also listed in EN 10028-7:2016 for pressure purposes. That standard may set its own test and property requirements, which we have not reproduced here.

1.4432 chemical composition: heat analysis and product analysis tolerances

The 1.4432 chemical composition below is the cast (heat) analysis from EN 10088-2:2014 Table 1. Values are percentages by mass; a single figure is a maximum.

CSiMnPSCrMoNiN
0.0301.002.000.0450.01516.5 – 18.52.50 – 3.0010.5 – 13.00.10

The 1.4432 molybdenum of 2.50 – 3.00 % is what separates it from 1.4404. Footnote b to Table 1 permits controlled sulphur ranges: 0.015 – 0.030 % for machinability, 0.008 – 0.015 % for weldability, and 0.015 % max. for polishability. SHH STEEL checks molybdenum, carbon and nickel on every certificate as part of the 1.4432 chemical composition review.

Product analysis tolerances (EN 10088-2 Table 5)

A product analysis is a check made on the delivered sheet. It is not mandatory under EN 10088-2; it is carried out when agreed at the time of enquiry and order, and SHH STEEL can arrange it through a partner laboratory. The permissible tolerances on the cast limits are:

ElementCast limit, %Permissible tolerance, %Product analysis limit, %
C≤ 0.030+ 0.005≤ 0.035
Si≤ 1.00+ 0.05≤ 1.05

Ni10.5 – 13.0± 0.1510.35 – 13.15
N≤ 0.10+ 0.01≤ 0.11

Where several product analyses are made on one cast, individual results may exceed the maximum or fall below the minimum, but not both for the same element. If a product analysis is required, it should be stated in the order together with the Table 5 tolerances.

1.4432 mechanical properties: solution annealed condition

The 1.4432 mechanical properties below are the room-temperature values from EN 10088-2:2014 Table 7 for austenitic steels in the solution annealed condition. Test pieces are transverse; the A80 elongation applies below 3 mm and the proportional elongation A from 3 mm.

P – hot rolled plate75220260520 – 6704545100 / 60

Rp1.0 values are for guidance only. For continuously hot rolled products, 20 MPa higher minimum Rp0.2 and 10 MPa higher Rp1.0 may be agreed. For strip in rolling widths below 300 mm tested longitudinally, the minimum proof strength is reduced by 15 MPa and elongation by 5 % (constant gauge) or 2 % (proportional gauge). For bigger sizes than those listed, mechanical values are to be agreed.

Table 7 rates 1.4432 resistance to intergranular corrosion (EN ISO 3651-2) as “yes” in both the delivery condition and the sensitized condition.

Cold worked condition (process route 2H)

EN 10088-2 Tables 19 and 20 list no cold worked (2H) strength levels for 1.4432, so the grade is ordered in the solution annealed condition (+AT). Where a higher strength is needed, 1.4401 (+C700 and +C850) or the nitrogen-alloyed grades are the usual options.

Minimum proof strength at elevated temperature (EN 10088-2 Table 12, +AT)

EN 10088-2 Table 12 gives values from 100 °C to 550 °C for this grade, for the solution annealed condition (+AT). They are minimum values for design and are not tested unless agreed.

Heat treatment of X2CrNiMo17-12-3: solution annealing

EN 10088-2 Table A.1 gives the following guideline temperatures for 1.4432:

OperationTemperature, °CCooling
Hot forming1 150 – 850Air
Solution annealing (+AT)1 030 – 1 110Water or air, sufficiently rapid to avoid intergranular corrosion

The footnotes to Table A.1 state that with a continuous furnace the upper part of the range is usually preferred or even exceeded, and that the lower end of the range should be aimed at when the heat treatment is part of further processing, because otherwise the mechanical properties may be affected. Solution annealing may be omitted if hot working and cooling achieve the required mechanical properties and resistance to intergranular corrosion.

The Euro Inox tables give the same 1 030 – 1 110 °C range with cooling in air or water. Material is delivered as +AT.

Physical properties of 1.4432 austenitic plate

The values below are approximate reference figures for X2CrNiMo17-12-3 at room temperature, from the worldstainless “Tables of Technical Properties”, which follow EN 10088-1. They are suitable for design estimates and weight calculation; where a figure is critical, use EN 10088-1 itself.

PropertyApproximate value
Densityabout 8.0 g/cm³
Modulus of elasticity at 20 °Cabout 200 GPa
Mean thermal expansion, 20 – 200 °C16.5 × 10⁻⁶ /K
Thermal conductivity at 20 °C15 W/(m·K)
Specific heat at 20 °Cabout 500 J/(kg·K)
Electrical resistivity at 20 °C0.75 Ω·mm²/m
Magnetic behaviourEssentially non-magnetic when solution annealed; magnetism increases with cold work

The worldstainless table gives 1.4432 the same density, modulus, expansion, conductivity and resistivity as 1.4404. 1.4432 is not listed in the EN 10088-1 extract by Häuselmann that we use for magnetic behaviour, so the magnetic statement above is the general austenitic one.

Corrosion behaviour of X2CrNiMo17-12-3 1.4432

The Euro Inox fabrication tables list 1.4432 for drinking, cooling and waste water and for external cladding in chloride-containing atmospheres. EN 10088-2 Table 7 rates its resistance to intergranular corrosion, tested to EN ISO 3651-2, as “yes” in the delivery condition and “yes” in the sensitized condition. The guaranteed minimum of 2.50 % molybdenum gives a higher floor for pitting resistance than 1.4404, whose minimum is 2.00 %.

EnvironmentTypical behaviour
Drinking, cooling and waste waterListed end use (Euro Inox)
External cladding, chloride atmosphereListed end use (Euro Inox)
Pitting in chloridesHigher minimum Mo than 1.4404
Intergranular corrosion, sensitizedResistant (Table 7: yes)
Seawater and warm chloridesCheck case by case; higher-Mo or duplex grades may be needed

Where more nickel is wanted with the same molybdenum range, EN 10088-2 1.4435 plate (12.5 – 15.0 % Ni, 17.0 – 19.0 % Cr) is the next step; where 2.00 – 2.50 % molybdenum is enough, EN 10088-2 1.4404 plate.

As EN 10088-2 notes, corrosion resistance depends strongly on the environment and cannot always be judged from laboratory tests, so experience with the grade in similar service should be used.

Weldability of 1.4432 austenitic plate: SHH STEEL workshop practice

1.4432 is readily weldable by the common processes.

  • The Euro Inox fabrication tables rate TIG/MIG, manual metal arc and resistance welding as suitable for 1.4432; they give no rating for autogenous welding.
  • The filler material listed is 1.4430.
  • EN 10088-2 Table 7 rates 1.4432 “yes” for intergranular corrosion after sensitization.
  • EN 10088-2 does not specify welding procedures; these are published guidelines and general practice.

These points reflect industry practice for austenitic CrNiMo stainless steels rather than requirements of EN 10088-2, which does not specify welding procedures. In the SHH STEEL workshop, blanks and slit strips are cut with clean, burr-free edges so that seam, spot and tube welding run without edge preparation problems.

Forming, cold working and cutting of X2CrNiMo17-12-3 in the SHH STEEL workshop

Annealed 1.4432 forms well with standard austenitic practice and work-hardens during forming, so forming forces are higher than for carbon steel and springback should be allowed for. Table 7 gives it the same plate strength as 1.4404, so forming behaviour is similar.

Thick plate is cut by plasma or waterjet, and sheet by laser or shearing. Machining needs sharp tools and positive feeds to avoid work hardening at the cut.

We run our own workshop next to the warehouse, so 1.4432 hot rolled plate and X2CrNiMo17-12-3 plate blanks can be delivered cut to size, laser-cut or bent, with protective film on visible surfaces. Details are on our steel cutting services and bending and forming services pages.

1.4432 plate sizes, thickness limits and tolerances

1.4432 is listed in EN 10088-2 as cold rolled strip, continuously hot rolled strip and hot rolled plate, all solution annealed.

Product formThickness range covered by EN 10088-2Typical width supplied (by mill)Tolerance standard
C – cold rolled strip and sheetup to 8 mmconfirmed at enquiryEN ISO 9445-1 / EN ISO 9445-2
H – continuously hot rolled strip and plateup to 13.5 mmconfirmed at enquiryEN ISO 9444-2
P – hot rolled (quarto) plateup to 75 mm in Table 7; thicker plate by agreementconfirmed at enquiryEN ISO 18286

EN 10088-2 Table 7 gives mechanical values for hot rolled plate up to 75 mm; for bigger sizes the mechanical values shall be agreed at the time of enquiry and order. Under section 6.9 of the standard, EN ISO 18286 normally applies only to individually rolled quarto plate, while continuously rolled material follows EN ISO 9444-2.

SHH STEEL can supply 1.4432 hot rolled plate and coil, and 1.4432 cold rolled sheet and coil, in standard sizes or cut to your drawing.

Surface finishes for EN 10088-2 X2CrNiMo17-12-3 plate

Surface finish is ordered by the process route symbols of EN 10088-2 Table 6; trade names from ASTM and JIS are shown for reference. Not every route is available for every grade, and the mill confirms which ones it can supply.

EN symbolDescriptionCommon trade nameUse for 1.4432
1DHot rolled, heat treated, pickledNo.1Hot rolled plate and strip; usual standard for most steel types
1EHot rolled, heat treated, mechanically descaled—Plate for further processing
2DCold rolled, heat treated, pickledNo.2DFormed parts; good ductility
2BCold rolled, heat treated, pickled, skin passed2BGeneral cold rolled supply
2RCold rolled, bright annealedBAVisible parts; smoother and brighter than 2B
1J / 2JBrushed or dull polishedNo.4Visible panels; grit or roughness to be agreed

The No.1, No.4 and BA cross-references follow worldstainless and IMOA comparison tables; EN 10088-2 itself defines only the EN symbols, and not every route is available for every grade. Special finishes such as 1J and 2J apply to one surface unless otherwise agreed. The Euro Inox tables rate 1.4432 polishability as good, which suits visible cladding.

1.4432 equivalent grades: ASTM, GB and JIS cross-reference

The nearest 1.4432 equivalent is UNS S31603 (316L); there is no separate ASTM grade, and 1.4432 is in effect a high-molybdenum subset of 316L.

For Chinese pressure vessels the grade is ordered as GB/T 713.7 S31603 pressure vessel plate with an agreed molybdenum minimum. Buying any of these foreign grades without a molybdenum minimum may deliver material below 2.50 %.

1.4432 vs 1.4404 and 1.4435

Compared with 1.4404, 1.4432 has 2.50 – 3.00 % molybdenum against 2.00 – 2.50 % and a nickel minimum of 10.5 % against 10.0 %; Table 7 and Table 12 give the same strength values. Compared with 1.4435, it has less nickel (10.5 – 13.0 % against 12.5 – 15.0 %) and slightly less chromium, with the same molybdenum range and Table 7 values.

Applications of 1.4432 austenitic plate

Typical applications of 1.4432 plate and sheet listed in the Euro Inox fabrication tables include:

  • Drinking water systems
  • Cooling water systems
  • Waste water treatment equipment
  • External cladding in chloride-containing atmospheres
  • Pressure parts (to EN 10028-7)

For pressure equipment, 1.4432 plate is ordered to EN 10028-7; for other uses, EN 10088-2 applies.

Buyers choose 1.4432 when a specification calls for 316L with at least 2.5 % molybdenum. SHH STEEL can advise when 1.4404 or 1.4435 is the better choice.

Common buyer concerns and our solutions

For 1.4432 the main risks are molybdenum below 2.50 %, certificates that only show 316L limits, and confusion with 1.4404.

ConcernWhat Usually HappensHow SHH STEEL Handles It
Low molybdenumMo 2.00 – 2.49 % (1.4404 level).Molybdenum checked on the certificate and by analysis.
316L-only certificateMeets 316L but not 1.4432.Dual certification checked against both standards.
Low nickelNi below 10.5 %.Nickel checked on the certificate.
Wrong standardEN 10088-2 plate is used where EN 10028-7 is required. The governing standard is confirmed before ordering.
Finish mismatch2B arrives when 2R or 2J was needed. The finish symbol and any grit are written into the order.

None of these steps is complicated, but they need to be agreed at the start. When you send an enquiry, tell us which of these points matters most to you, and the order will be built around it.

Testing, certificates and lead time at SHH STEEL

Every 1.4432 order is supported by documents and checks that make the material traceable to the heat:

  • Cast analysis with molybdenum, carbon, chromium and nickel checked
  • Tensile test (transverse) to Table 7
  • Impact test for plate over 10 mm when agreed
  • Intergranular corrosion test to EN ISO 3651-2 when agreed
  • Thickness, flatness and surface inspection
  • Additional checks through our third-party testing service: PMI, dimensional, flatness and surface inspection

If the order does not name an inspection document, EN 10088-2 requires only a test report 2.2. Because this is rarely enough for water treatment, cladding and chemical equipment or export work, SHH STEEL supplies an EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate as standard and a 3.2 certificate when an independent inspector (TUV, ABS, BV, DNV, CCS or an agency you nominate) witnesses testing and countersigns the document.

Ordering example and lead time

Following the pattern of the example in EN 10088-2, a typical order line would read: 20 sheets, 3 mm × 1 500 mm × 3 000 mm, EN ISO 9445-2, EN 10088-2, steel X2CrNiMo17-12-3 (1.4432), process route 2B, inspection certificate 3.1 to EN 10204. Mill production lead time is generally 30 – 40 days from order confirmation, depending on the rolling schedule, the size and the tests requested. Consolidated small lots follow the same mill schedule, and we send progress updates at rolling, testing and packing.

FAQ

What is 1.4432 stainless steel equivalent to?
There is no separate ASTM grade for 1.4432. It lies within UNS S31603, Type 316L, in ASTM A240 and ASME SA-240 for carbon, nickel and molybdenum, but uses only the upper part of the 316L molybdenum range: 2.50 – 3.00 % against 2.00 – 3.00 %. Its chromium range of 16.5 – 18.5 % is slightly higher than the ASTM 16.0 – 18.0 %. The Chinese grade 022Cr17Ni12Mo2, ISC code S31603, is similar, and JIS SUS316L needs 12.00 – 15.00 % nickel, so it only partly overlaps. A heat with chromium up to 18.0 % and silicon up to 0.75 % can be dual certified to 1.4432 and S31603. When ordering to a foreign standard, a molybdenum minimum of 2.50 % should be written into the order, and SHH STEEL checks this before acceptance.
What is the chemical composition of 1.4432?
EN 10088-2:2014 Table 1 gives a cast analysis of maximum 0.030 % carbon, 1.00 % silicon, 2.00 % manganese, 0.045 % phosphorus and 0.015 % sulphur, with 16.5 – 18.5 % chromium, 2.50 – 3.00 % molybdenum, 10.5 – 13.0 % nickel and up to 0.10 % nitrogen. A footnote permits controlled sulphur ranges for machinability, weldability or polishability. If a product analysis is agreed, Table 5 allows + 0.005 % on carbon, ± 0.20 % on chromium, ± 0.10 % on molybdenum and ± 0.15 % on nickel, so molybdenum may read 2.40 – 3.10 % in a product check. The molybdenum minimum is the defining feature of the grade. SHH STEEL checks molybdenum, carbon and nickel on every mill certificate and can arrange independent laboratory analysis.
What are the mechanical properties of 1.4432 plate?
EN 10088-2:2014 Table 7 gives values for the solution annealed condition. Hot rolled plate up to 75 mm needs a minimum 0.2 % proof strength of 220 MPa, a minimum 1 % proof strength of 260 MPa for guidance, a tensile strength of 520 – 670 MPa and at least 45 % elongation. Continuously hot rolled strip up to 13.5 mm has the same proof strengths with 550 – 700 MPa and 40 % elongation, and cold rolled strip up to 8 mm needs 240 MPa. For plate over 10 mm, impact energy is at least 100 J longitudinal or 60 J transverse. Table 12 gives minimum proof strengths up to 550 °C, identical to those of 1.4404. SHH STEEL can arrange witnessed tensile and impact tests for 3.2 certificates.
What is the difference between 1.4432 and 1.4404?
Both are low-carbon 316L-type grades with the same carbon and chromium limits, and EN 10088-2 Table 7 rates both “yes” for intergranular corrosion after sensitization. The difference is molybdenum: 1.4432 requires 2.50 – 3.00 %, while 1.4404 has 2.00 – 2.50 %, and 1.4432 has a nickel minimum of 10.5 % instead of 10.0 %. Plate strength in Table 7 is the same, and Table 12 values are identical; for strip, 1.4432 has a slightly higher tensile range of 550 – 700 MPa. The higher molybdenum floor gives more margin against pitting in chloride water. The Euro Inox tables list 1.4432 for drinking, cooling and waste water and external cladding. SHH STEEL can quote both grades side by side so that buyers can compare cost against molybdenum margin.
Can 1.4432 be welded?
Yes. 1.4432 is readily weldable. The Euro Inox fabrication tables rate TIG, MIG, manual metal arc and resistance welding as suitable, give no rating for autogenous welding, and list filler material 1.4430, which is itself a low-carbon molybdenum-alloyed austenitic weld metal. EN 10088-2 Table 7 rates 1.4432 resistant to intergranular corrosion after sensitization, when tested to EN ISO 3651-2, so welded sections do not need a stabilized grade for that reason. For visible cladding, weld discoloration should be removed by pickling or polishing to restore the passive surface. EN 10088-2 does not specify welding procedures, so the fabricator's qualified procedure governs filler choice and heat input. SHH STEEL can supply test plates from the same heat for procedure qualification, together with the production certificates.
What is the lead time and minimum order for 1.4432 plate and sheet?
Mill production lead time is usually 30 – 40 days from order confirmation, depending on the rolling schedule, the thickness, the finish and the tests required. Because 1.4432 needs a molybdenum minimum of 2.50 %, the mill has to melt to that target, so the date and available sizes should be confirmed at enquiry; thick plate, 2R or polished finishes may need a particular campaign. Mill minimum quantities for a dedicated rolling are often higher than a single project needs. SHH STEEL consolidates several customer orders into one mill campaign, which makes lots of 1 – 5 t practical. For larger tonnages, a buyer can contract directly with a suitable mill, with SHH STEEL assisting for a modest service fee. Workshop cutting normally adds a few days, and agreed corrosion tests can add a little more.

Ordering EN 10088-2 1.4432 Plate from SHH STEEL

EN 10088-2 X2CrNiMo17-12-3 1.4432 is the low-carbon 316L-type austenitic steel with 2.50 – 3.00 % molybdenum, supplied as hot rolled plate up to 75 mm and cold rolled sheet for water systems, cladding and chemical equipment. Choosing it is the easy part. Getting genuine material that matches the certificate, in the gauge and finish your parts need and on a predictable schedule, is where a sourcing partner earns its place, and that is the work SHH STEEL does every day through long-term mill cooperation, consolidation and its own workshop.

The next step is simple. Send SHH STEEL your drawing, or an enquiry with the quantity, thickness, width, finish and delivery destination, and we will judge whether a direct mill contract or consolidation with processing fits your order better, and quote accordingly.
