AISI 316Ti is selected when both improved pitting resistance (from molybdenum) and stabilization against intergranular corrosion (from titanium) are required, particularly for welded constructions that will operate at elevated temperatures. Compared with a240 316l, it offers better performance in continuous high-temperature service. Compared with a240 321, it provides superior pitting resistance due to molybdenum. For higher molybdenum content, SHH STEEL recommends a240 317l.

Corrosion Resistance

AISI 316Ti offers excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion, fresh water, food products and many chemical environments. The molybdenum addition provides superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing media compared with 304/321, while the titanium stabilization ensures excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding or exposure to the sensitization temperature range.

It performs well in chemical processing, heat exchangers and applications involving moderate chlorides at elevated temperatures. In highly concentrated chlorides or very aggressive environments, pitting or stress corrosion cracking can still occur. For more severe chloride service, SHH STEEL recommends a240 317l or a240 2205.

Weldability

AISI 316Ti has excellent weldability due to titanium stabilization. Matching or appropriate titanium-stabilized / 316-type filler metals are recommended.
