BV D620 / BV D620 shipbuilding steel plate — overview

Technical Reviewer: Jack | SHH STEEL Material Solutions Department · Updated: 2026-10-27

For −20 °C extra-high yield under Bureau Veritas, the commercial grade is BV D620 (BV D620), written without the intermediate H used on AH/DH higher-strength names. IACS Unified Requirement W16 covers this strength band (yield 620 N/mm²); BV implements corresponding requirements in NR216 Materials rules. Minimum yield is 620 N/mm², tensile 720–890 N/mm², elongation 15 % min., with Charpy at −20 °C. It sits above the AH–FH 40 higher-strength family (max yield 390 N/mm² under UR W11). Commercial enquiries use BV D620 or BV D620 shipbuilding steel plate.

Equivalent grades: BV D620 ≈ ASTM A131 (no direct grade at this strength) ≈ ABS DH62 / DQ63 ≈ DNV NV D620 ≈ LR DH62 ≈ CCS DH620 ≈ NK KD620 ≈ KR RD63 ≈ RINA D620 ≈ GB 712 Grade DH620 (all class-approved, stamped by the issuing society).

Naming note: Bureau Veritas titles this strength band as D620 / BV D620 (no H — write A420, not AH420 or AH42). DNV often titles the same yield as DH620 / DNV NV D620. LR titles DH62. ABS often titles DH62 (official ABS DQ63). ASTM A131 has no grade at this strength. Write BV D620 on the BV purchase order.

BV D620 is almost always produced TM or QT by a BV-approved mill to order rather than taken from open stock. SHH STEEL sources extra-high-strength plate from mills with Bureau Veritas approval for the grade, under Surveyor attendance, with optional multi-class (ABS/DNV/LR) and EN 10204 3.2.

Product (check) analysis column: BV NR216 specify heat (ladle) limits; no numeric product-analysis tolerance is tabulated in the rule text reviewed, so product (check) limits are agreed on the order or taken from the approved mill specification and certificate.

Source: IACS UR W16 chemistry envelope (ABS 2-1-8 Table 4A aligned) as implemented by Bureau Veritas for BV D620 via NR216 — exact ladle limits depend on delivery condition (TM vs QT) and toughness letter. Values above are the rule envelope with every alloy / microalloy row listed; the purchase order and mill approval sheet govern. Product analysis: as per standard and mill certificate. All intentionally added elements and Ceq (or CET/Pcm) are to be reported. Flagged UNCERTAIN where a local BV NR216 PDF was not available to quote paragraph numbers.

BV BV D620 tensile and impact properties

Final acceptance values are as per standard and mill certificate under BV survey. For thick plate, additional mid-thickness tensile/impact positions may apply — confirm at enquiry. Test frequency is typically each heat-treatment batch of same cast/condition/thickness.

Delivery condition and toughness for BV D620

Charpy temperature is fixed by the grade letter: D → −20 °C. Indicative average energy 62 / 41 J (L/T) from IACS UR W16 aligned tables — confirm exact figures on the BV-endorsed certificate. Unlike UR W11 higher-strength tables, EHS energies are usually stated as a single pair rather than rising through many thickness bands; thick-plate mid-thickness rules may still apply.

Allowed delivery conditions are primarily TM and QT within the mill’s approved thickness. Vacuum degassing is commonly required for higher categories and for thicker plate — follow the mill approval. State TM or QT on the PO; do not leave delivery condition blank for D620.

Thickness tolerance and surface condition

Bureau Veritas applies IACS UR W13 unless the PO states otherwise (confirm minus class on PO; see UNCERTAIN). Surface repair limits follow the applicable BV / UR rules; state primer/surface class on receipt if needed. For QT plate, avoid notching cut edges; follow mill cutting recommendations.

BV BV D620 vs higher-strength and other EHS grades

Use D620 when scantlings need yield 620 N/mm². Do not substitute AH40/EH40 (390 N/mm² max under UR W11) without redesign. Within the 620 band, letter choice is toughness: A 0 °C → D −20 °C → E −40 °C → F −60 °C. Neighbouring strengths are 550 / 690 — swapping strength needs class approval of the drawing change.

When BV BV D620 is the right choice: typical uses are extra-high-strength members assigned −20 °C toughness on the BV material class table — thicker primary strakes and ice-strengthened structure at extra-high yield — weight-critical hull girder strakes, polar and ice-class primary structure, and offshore units where 620 N/mm² is specified. See offshore platform steel plates for related offshore grades.

Applications and welding notes for BV BV D620

Typical uses: extra-high-strength members assigned −20 °C toughness on the BV material class table — thicker primary strakes and ice-strengthened structure at ReH 620 N/mm²; strength deck and shell of large container ships and gas carriers where EHS is specified; ice-belt and polar primary structure; selected offshore members. See offshore platform steel plates.

Welding: BV D620 is an extra-high-strength steel supplied TM or QT. Welding must follow a procedure qualified for this grade and approved by BV. Ceq/CET/Pcm from the ladle analysis govern hydrogen control, preheat, interpass and heat-input windows. Too much heat input can lower HAZ strength and toughness in QT plate. We send the certificate values before shipment so your welding engineer can confirm the procedure fits. We do not give generic preheat temperatures.

Processing notes: BV D620 owes its strength to TM or QT processing. Hot forming or stress relieving above the tempering temperature can lower the properties, so any heat treatment after delivery must be agreed with the mill and BV. Cold forming and bending radii should follow the mill’s data sheet. Thermal cutting parameters follow mill recommendations so the cut edge is not damaged.

Certificates, BV survey and third-party inspection

BV survey at the mill; certificate includes ladle chemistry (full alloy set + Ceq/CET/Pcm as applicable), tensile (ReH ≥ 620, Rm 720–890, A ≥ 15 %), Charpy at −20 °C, delivery condition, UT if ordered, and plate identity. Optional EN 10204 3.2 and multi-class with ABS/DNV/LR.

On receipt: verify BV D620 stamp, −20 °C impact data, energies ≥ ordered/certified minima, thickness within tolerance, Surveyor endorsement, UT report if required.

Charpy acceptance for BV D620 (IACS UR W16 aligned; actual results as per standard and mill certificate):

Thickness t (mm)Test temperatureAverage energy, longitudinal (J min.)Average energy, transverse (J min.)
as per UR W16 / mill approval (typically t/4 position)−20 °C6241

For thickness above ~100 mm, additional mid-thickness rules may apply — confirm at enquiry. If the PO asked for 3.2, the inspector’s report must name the witnessed tests and plate numbers.

Common mistakes when ordering BV D620 / BV D620

  • Ordering “BV 620” without the letter (D) — toughness missing
  • Writing AH620 / AH62 / AH620 on a BV PO — BV official form is D620 (no H)
  • Writing ABS DH62 or DNV DH620 or LR DH62 on a BV-class PO without arranging that society’s survey (wrong stamp)
  • Leaving delivery condition blank (TM vs QT changes price, mill and properties)
  • Expecting ASTM A131 dual-cert at this strength (A131 has no EHS grade)
  • Skipping UT on thick EHS plate when the yard specification requires it
  • Missing BV endorsement / assuming GB 712 Grade DH620 alone is class approval
  • Omitting alloy / microalloy rows (Al, Nb, V, Ti, Cu, Cr, Ni, Mo, B, N) from the certificate check

Write grade ({g}, no H), TM/QT, impact temperature, UT level and certificate type into the PO.

FAQ

What sizes and minimum order quantity can you supply for BV D620 / BV D620 plate?
BV D620 is ordered as Bureau Veritas extra-high-strength grade D620 (IACS UR W16 strength band; BV official no-H naming). The plate is fully killed, and the maximum thickness depends on the delivery condition (TM or QT) and the mill’s BV approval. In practice BV D620 is nearly always produced by an approved mill to order rather than taken from stock, so a mill minimum per heat or rolling usually applies. Send thickness × width × length × quantity per size and we will say whether the order fits a scheduled rolling or needs its own heat. Small balance quantities can sometimes ride on another D620 order.
How is BV BV D620 certified, and can you arrange EN 10204 3.2 or dual-class with ABS/DNV/LR?
Every plate is made by a BV-approved mill under Bureau Veritas survey. It is die-stamped or stencilled BV D620 / BV D620 with the heat or plate number, and the mill test certificate is endorsed by the BV Surveyor. The certificate gives ladle chemistry (full alloy set including Al, Nb, V, Ti, Cu, Cr, Ni, Mo, B, N where applicable), Ceq/CET/Pcm as applicable, tensile (ReH ≥ 620 N/mm², Rm 720–890 N/mm², A ≥ 15 %), Charpy at −20 °C, delivery condition, UT if ordered, and plate identity. If your contract asks for EN 10204 3.2, we arrange it before rolling. Dual or multi-class (e.g. BV + ABS, DNV or LR) must be booked before testing. 3.2 cannot be added afterwards.
What is the impact test temperature and energy for BV D620 / BV D620, and do thickness limits apply?
BV D620 is tested at −20 °C with an indicative average of at least 62 J longitudinal or 41 J transverse (IACS UR W16 aligned tables). Impact specimens typically come from the quarter-thickness position (t/4). For thicker plates, BV / UR W16 may require additional positions. Rule maximum thickness depends on whether the plate is TM or QT and on mill approval, so give the delivery condition as well as the thickness, and we will check the approved mill’s range before quoting. Final values are as per standard and mill certificate (see UNCERTAIN).
What welding and preheat guidance applies to BV BV D620?
BV D620 is an extra-high-strength steel (yield ≥ 620 N/mm²) supplied TM or QT. Welding must follow a procedure qualified for this grade and approved by BV. Ceq is calculated from the ladle analysis and limited by the approval chemistry; the mill may also report CET or Pcm for low-carbon TM/QT steel. Hydrogen control, preheat, interpass temperature and heat-input windows come from the approved WPS and the mill’s recommendations. Too much heat input can lower HAZ strength and toughness in QT plate. We send the certificate values before shipment so your welding engineer can confirm the procedure fits.
What is the delivery time for BV BV D620 plate?
BV D620 is normally rolled to order. Typical commercial lead time is about 6–10 weeks from confirmed PO and deposit, depending on the mill rolling schedule, QT capacity, UT and any 3.2 witness. Ocean transit comes on top of that. This is a commercial estimate, not a rule value, and we confirm it with each quotation. Every week, your coordinator sends the rolling, heat-treatment, testing and stamping status with photos. Delays are reported as soon as the mill tells us, not at the shipping date.
Which payment terms do you accept for BV D620, and how is my deposit protected?
We accept T/T or L/C at sight. With T/T, the usual terms are a 30 % deposit and the balance against the documents or after inspection. You or your inspector can check the BV D620 stamping, the dimensions and the Surveyor-endorsed certificate before you pay the balance. With L/C, payment is tied to the presented documents. For first orders we can start with a smaller trial lot. The proforma invoice shows the grade (BV D620 / BV D620), TM/QT, sizes and certificate type.
Why does BV write D620 (no H) while DNV/LR/ABS use AH620-style names, and what are the equivalents?
Bureau Veritas lists BV D620 for commercial D620 (official QT/EHS form without H — A420 not AH420). ASTM A131/A131M stops at FH40, so it has no direct equivalent. ABS DH62 / DQ63 is the usual ABS counterpart. DNV NV D620 is the DNV counterpart (DNV titles DH620). LR DH62 / LR/DH62 is the LR counterpart (LR titles DH62). CCS DH620, NK KD620 and KR RD63 are the CCS/NK/KR counterparts. RINA EHS names are written “per rules” until verified. GB 712 Grade DH620 is listed in the GB 712 EHS band but is not class approval by itself. Always write BV D620 on the PO, plus any additional society stamps you need.
Can you cut, bevel or machine BV BV D620 plates, and how are they packed for export?
Yes. In our workshop we can flame, plasma or laser cut D620 to drawings, bevel weld edges (V, X or K preparation to your angle and land), drill and machine. Every cut piece keeps traceability: we transfer the BV D620 marking and heat number before cutting, and the cutting list is tied to the mill certificate. For QT extra-high-strength plate, thermal cutting parameters follow the mill’s recommendations so the cut edge is not damaged. For export, plates are bundled with steel straps and timber spacers, marked with grade, size and heat number, and loaded in containers or as break-bulk. See SHH STEEL for our processing capabilities.

Conclusion

BV D620 / BV D620 is extra-high-strength hull steel (IACS UR W16 band; BV official no-H naming): yield 620 N/mm², tensile 720–890 N/mm², Charpy at −20 °C, marking BV D620. Lock on the order: TM or QT, UT level, Ceq/CET/Pcm reporting, multi-class and 3.2.

SHH STEEL supplies BV D620 plate rolled by Chinese mills that hold Bureau Veritas works approval for the grade, so every plate carries the BV D620 stamp and a Surveyor-endorsed certificate traceable to its heat. Sizes are scheduled into the mill rolling cycle with BV survey arranged at the mill. On request we add EN 10204 3.2 certificates with third-party witness (TÜV, SGS, LR or another agency) and joint certification with ABS, DNV, LR, CCS, NK, KR or RINA.

We accept T/T or L/C payment, with inspection before the balance is paid. Small quantities in several sizes, or BV D620 with neighbouring EHS sizes or higher-strength AH–FH 40 where the drawing allows, can be combined in one container. A dedicated coordinator sends production and shipping updates with photos, and our own workshop cuts to size, bevels, drills and machines plates before shipment so they arrive ready for fabrication.

Request a quotation: send SHH STEEL the grade (BV D620 / BV D620), thickness, width, length, quantity per size and destination port, plus any multi-class, Z/U or 3.2 certificate requirement. We reply with price, available stock and lead time.
