ASME SA789 UNS S32001 Lean Duplex Stainless Steel Tube
What is ASME SA789 UNS S32001 Lean Duplex Stainless Steel Tube
ASME SA-789 / SA-789M is the Section II Part A Code Book standard for seamless and welded ferritic/austenitic stainless steel tubing for general service. UNS S32001 is listed as a lean duplex: chromium 19.5–21.5%, nickel only 1.0–3.0%, manganese deliberately high at 4.00–6.00%, molybdenum 0.60% maximum, nitrogen 0.05–0.17%, and copper 1.00% maximum, with carbon ≤0.030%. The high manganese and low nickel are the commercial idea — duplex strength and better chloride SCC resistance than 304, at a lower nickel cost than 2205-class grades.
SHH STEEL can produce and supply ASME SA789 UNS S32001 lean duplex stainless steel tube in both seamless and welded (no filler metal) manufacture routes, in typical heat-exchanger and general-service OD × wall sizes, with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates that report the full ladle chemistry — including the manganese band — plus tensile, hardness, and Table 2 heat treatment. We manufacture this grade under the SA-789 tables rather than trading an unnamed lean-duplex substitute. Dual SA-789/A789 marking is available when the purchase order asks for both names; this article stays ASME-first for Code work.
Compared with mainstream 22Cr duplex SA789 S32205, S32001 runs far less nickel and molybdenum, so estimated PREN sits lower. Sister lean options include SA789 S32304 and SA789 S32101; seawater PREN ≥40 duty still belongs on SA789 S32750. Related plate is ordered under A240 / SA240. Full series hub: SA789/SA789M.
Chemical Composition of SA789 S32001
Table 1 of ASME SA-789 fixes the heat analysis for S32001. Product analysis applies when Section 8 or the purchase order invokes it through A1016/A1016M, using A480/A480M tolerances. Manganese 4.00–6.00% is intentional alloying on this lean duplex — not a residual — and must appear on the MTC inside that range.
| Element | Heat analysis (ASME SA-789 Table 1) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.030 max |
| Manganese (Mn) | 4.00–6.00 |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.040 max |
| Sulfur (S) | 0.030 max |
| Silicon (Si) | 1.00 max |
| Nickel (Ni) | 1.0–3.0 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 19.5–21.5 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 0.60 max |
| Nitrogen (N) | 0.05–0.17 |
| Copper (Cu) | 1.00 max |
Reading the row: low nickel, low molybdenum, and high manganese place S32001 firmly in the lean-duplex commercial band. Using PREN = %Cr + 3.3×%Mo + 16×%N on mid-range aims (Cr ≈20.5, Mo ≈0.3, N ≈0.11) gives PREN ≈ 23.2. That is an engineering estimate from stated chemistry; SA-789 does not publish a PREN minimum for this grade. Copper is capped at 1.00% max rather than given as a required range.
Mechanical Properties of SA789 S32001
Table 4 sets tensile and hardness floors for S32001 after final heat treatment. Lot sampling follows Section 9. Mechanical properties do not apply to tubing smaller than 1/8 in. [3.2 mm] OD or thinner than 0.015 in. [0.4 mm] wall.
| Property | Requirement (SA-789 Table 4) |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength, min | 90 ksi [620] MPa |
| Yield strength (0.2% offset), min | 65 ksi [450] MPa |
| Elongation in 2 in. or 50 mm, min | 25% |
| Hardness, max | 290 HBW / 30 HRC / 290 HV |
The 90/65 ksi pair matches several standard duplex rows on paper even though nickel is much lower — that strength-at-lower-Ni story is why lean duplex wins structural and some process-tube work. Design allowables remain in Section II Part D and are not quoted here. Source: ASME BPVC.II.A-2023 SA-789 Table 4.
Seamless and Welded Tube
ASME SA-789 covers seamless and welded tube for S32001, and Section 5 requires welded tube to be made with no filler metal added. The longitudinal seam is autogenous, then the finished tube is heat-treated as a whole — a different product story from filler-welded pipe under SA-312. Marking must state seamless or welded and whether wall is average or minimum.
Seamless lots take a flaring test with at least 10% inside-diameter expansion. Welded lots take a flange test plus reverse flattening on each 1500 ft [450 m] of finished tubing. Tension and hardness tests apply to both routes on the Section 9 lot basis. SHH STEEL produces both seamless and welded SA789 S32001 under those rules and records the route on the stencil and MTC.
Dimensions and Tolerances
Order ASME SA789 S32001 by outside diameter × wall thickness (average wall unless the order specifies minimum wall) and length — tube language and BWG, not ASME B36.19 pipe schedules as the primary size story. Table 5 sets permissible variations by OD group; thin-wall ovality follows clause 12.2.
| OD group (Table 5 summary) | OD tolerance | Avg / Min wall |
|---|---|---|
| Up to ½ in. excl. | ±0.005 in. [0.13 mm] | Avg ±15%; Min +30%/−0% |
| ½ to 1½ in. excl. | ±0.005 in. [0.13 mm] | Avg ±10%; Min +20%/−0% |
| 1½ to 3½ in. excl. | ±0.010 in. [0.25 mm] | Avg ±10%; Min +20%/−0% |
| 3½ to 5½ in. excl. | ±0.015 in. [0.38 mm] | Avg ±10%; Min +20%/−0% |
| 5½ to 8 in. incl. | ±0.030 in. [0.76 mm] | Avg ±10%; Min +20%/−0% |
State average versus minimum wall on the purchase order because the percentage bands differ. Source: ASME BPVC.II.A-2023 SA-789 Table 5. SHH STEEL quotes OD × wall or BWG explicitly on every S32001 enquiry so receiving inspection can match the certificate to the datasheet.
Equivalent Grades
UNS S32001 under ASME SA-789 is the governing tubing designation for this page. Lean-duplex trade names and EN numbers that point to similar low-nickel families are approximate chemistry cousins, not automatic Code substitutes on an SA-789 mill test certificate.
| Designation | Notes |
|---|---|
| ASME SA789 / SA789M UNS S32001 | Governing Code Book tubing designation |
| ASTM A789 / A789M UNS S32001 | Sister ASTM A789 S32001; dual-stencil only when PO asks |
| Related lean duplex tubes | SA789 S32304, SA789 S32101 — different Ni/Mo/N rows |
| Standard duplex comparison | SA789 S32205 — higher Mo and PREN |
| Plate / sheet | Related duplex plate under A240 / SA240 |
Spell the UNS number on the purchase order. Do not treat S32001 as interchangeable with 2205-class tube without checking molybdenum, nitrogen, and the corrosion requirement on the datasheet.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Table 2 requires S32001 solution treatment at 1800–1950 °F [982–1066 °C] with rapid cooling in air or water. That temperature band sits slightly below the 1870–2010 °F window used for S31803/S32205, and rapid cooling remains mandatory for phase balance.
Seamless tubes may be quenched directly after hot forming when the forming temperature is not less than the specified minimum solution-treatment temperature. Skipping or under-cooling the anneal risks intermetallics and undermines the corrosion performance expected from the lean-duplex chemistry. SHH STEEL delivers SA789 S32001 only in the heat-treated condition required by Table 2, with the treatment record on the MTC.
Corrosion Resistance
Lean duplex S32001 targets chloride SCC resistance better than 304/316 at a lower alloy cost than 2205, with estimated PREN around 23.2 from mid-range Table 1 aims. That PREN sits in the lean band (roughly 22–27 in common industry grouping), not the mid-30s of standard 22Cr duplex or the 40+ super-duplex class.
Do not stretch S32001 into seawater or high-chloride exchanger duty that needs SA789 S32205 or SA789 S32750. Prolonged elevated-temperature exposure can embrittle duplex ferrite — SA-789 warns about that risk, and duplex literature specifically flags the 475 °C mechanism. Keep continuous-service temperature inside engineering limits.
Applications of SA789 S32001 Tube
S32001 tube shows up where lean duplex strength and SCC resistance beat 304 on a nickel-cost budget — water systems, some process coolers, and structural or pressure-boundary tube when the datasheet names this UNS. Choose it for the written chemistry and tensile row, not as a silent substitute for 2205.
| Application area | Typical use | Selection note |
|---|---|---|
| Water and mild process exchangers | Lean duplex upgrade from 304/316 on SCC | Confirm chloride level vs PREN ≈23.2 |
| Cost-sensitive duplex tubing | Low-Ni alternative to 22Cr duplex | Not a drop-in for S32205 |
| Code general-service tube | SA-789 S32001 named on datasheet | Keep ASME designation on PO/MTC |
| Structural / pressure tube | High strength at reduced nickel | Check design allowables in II-D |
If the BOM already says 2205 / S32205, stay on SA789 S32205. If it names 2304-type lean chemistry, compare SA789 S32304 as well.
Weldability
Fabrication welds on S32001 tube typically use lean-duplex or matching fillers under a qualified WPS; the SA-789 welded tube product itself remains autogenous with no filler in the mill seam. High manganese changes weld-pool behaviour relative to low-Mn 2205 practice, so procedures should be qualified on representative heats rather than assumed from S32205 PQRs.
Control heat input and interpass temperature, cool the HAZ promptly to limit intermetallics, and clean thoroughly after welding. SHH STEEL can discuss filler families used with S32001; the Code-stamped fabricator owns the WPS/PQR.
Surface Finishes
Standard mill delivery for ASME SA789 S32001 is heat-treated and pickled or otherwise descaled, leaving a clean surface suitable for inspection under Section 13. Slight oxidation is not considered scale; excessive mill scale is rejectable. Bright anneal, bore polish, or specified Ra finishes are agreement items that must appear on the order.
When a fouling-sensitive exchanger specification quotes an Ra maximum, treat that as a commercial finish requirement on top of SA-789 product, not as automatic with the grade stamp. SHH STEEL supplies the standard descaled heat-treated finish as default and quotes special finishes against the written enquiry.
Inspection and Testing
Base testing for SA789 S32001 includes Table 1 heat analysis, Table 4 tension and hardness, flaring or flange tests by manufacture route, reverse flattening for welded tube, and hydrostatic or nondestructive electric testing of each length. The hydrostatic calculation uses the duplex factor 64000 (441.2) in place of the A1016 default. The manufacturer may choose hydro versus NDE unless the purchase order fixes the method.
Section 14 marking adds seamless-or-welded and average-or-minimum wall to the A1016 marking set. SHH STEEL’s EN 10204 3.1 MTC ties heat number, full chemistry including manganese, tensile/hardness, heat treatment, and test method to each length for receiving inspection.
Packaging and Shipping
S32001 tube leaves SHH STEEL bundled, end-protected, and tagged for export or domestic delivery according to the length mix on the order. Bundle tags repeat the ASME SA789 grade, seamless or welded identity, OD × wall (or BWG), heat number, and PO reference so site receiving can check the shipment without opening every certificate packet first.
Export packing can be bare bundles, wrapped bundles, or wooden-cased lengths for bright-finished or small-bore material. We ship under the Incoterms and destination documents named on the order acknowledgment, with the MTC pack accompanying or preceding the cargo as agreed.
Why Choose SHH STEEL
SHH STEEL produces and supplies ASME SA789 UNS S32001 as a manufactured Code Book lean-duplex tubing product — seamless and welded (no filler metal) — with the high-manganese chemistry reported honestly on the EN 10204 3.1 MTC. We do not treat lean duplex as a trader nickname for “cheap 2205.”
If the service needs mid-30s PREN or seawater margins, we steer the enquiry to SA789 S32205 or SA789 S32750 rather than stretching S32001. Dual SA-789/A789 marking and third-party inspection are available when requested. That production-plus-selection honesty is how we support Shanghai export buyers on this grade.
