ASME SA789 UNS S32205 Duplex Stainless Steel Tube
What is ASME SA789 UNS S32205 Duplex Stainless Steel Tube
ASME SA-789 / SA-789M is the Section II Part A Code Book product standard for seamless and welded ferritic/austenitic stainless steel tubing for general service. UNS S32205 is the modern 2205 duplex chemistry: chromium 22.0–23.0%, nickel 4.5–6.5%, molybdenum tightened to 3.0–3.5%, and nitrogen 0.14–0.20% at carbon ≤0.030%. It is the grade most buyers mean when they say “2205 tube” on a current purchase order, sitting beside — but not identical to — the older S31803 row.
SHH STEEL can produce and supply ASME SA789 UNS S32205 duplex stainless steel tube in both seamless and welded (no filler metal) manufacture routes, in the OD × wall sizes heat-exchanger and process buyers order most often, with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates that report ladle chemistry inside the tightened molybdenum and nitrogen bands, the 95/70 ksi tensile pair, and the Table 2 heat-treatment record. We manufacture S32205 under the SA-789 acceptance tables — not as a vague “2205 equivalent” claim against S31803. Dual SA-789/A789 marking is available when the purchase order asks for both names; this article stays ASME-first for Code work.
When a legacy drawing still says S31803, compare SA789 S31803 carefully before substituting. Lean duplex cost options include SA789 S32304. For seawater and PREN ≥40 duty step to SA789 S32750 or SA789 S32760. Higher-chromium 25Cr duplex without super-duplex intent includes SA789 S31200. Related plate: A240 / SA240. Hub: SA789/SA789M.
Chemical Composition of SA789 S32205
Table 1 of ASME SA-789 fixes the heat analysis. The practical upgrade from S31803 is visible in two places: molybdenum is a closed 3.0–3.5% band (not 2.5–3.5%), and nitrogen starts at 0.14% rather than 0.08%. Product analysis, when Section 8 or the purchase order invokes it, follows A1016/A1016M with A480/A480M tolerances. SHH STEEL reports actual ladle values on every EN 10204 3.1 MTC.
| Element | Heat analysis (ASME SA-789 Table 1) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.030 max |
| Manganese (Mn) | 2.00 max |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.030 max |
| Sulfur (S) | 0.020 max |
| Silicon (Si) | 1.00 max |
| Nickel (Ni) | 4.5–6.5 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 22.0–23.0 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 3.0–3.5 |
| Nitrogen (N) | 0.14–0.20 |
| Copper (Cu) | … (not required) |
Mid-range PREN using %Cr + 3.3×%Mo + 16×%N with Cr ≈22.5, Mo ≈3.25, N ≈0.17 gives PREN ≈ 35.9. That mid-30s estimate is why S32205 is the workhorse standard duplex for chloride SCC service short of super duplex. SA-789 does not publish a PREN minimum for S32205 — the figure is an engineering estimate from stated chemistry. Sulfur is held to 0.020% max.
Mechanical Properties of SA789 S32205
Table 4 sets a single tensile and hardness row for S32205 after final heat treatment — no wall split. Lot sampling follows Section 9. Mechanical properties do not apply below 1/8 in. [3.2 mm] OD or 0.015 in. [0.4 mm] wall.
| Property | Requirement (SA-789 Table 4) |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength, min | 95 ksi [655] MPa |
| Yield strength (0.2% offset), min | 70 ksi [485] MPa |
| Elongation in 2 in. or 50 mm, min | 25% |
| Hardness, max | 290 HBW / 30 HRC / 290 HV |
Tensile strength 95 ksi [655 MPa] min, yield 70 ksi [485 MPa] min, elongation 25% min, hardness max 290 HBW / 30 HRC / 290 HV. Compared with SA789 S31803, tensile is five ksi higher and yield is five ksi higher. Source: ASME BPVC.II.A-2023 SA-789 Table 4. Design allowables live in Section II Part D and are not quoted here.
Seamless and Welded Tube
ASME SA-789 covers seamless and welded S32205 tube. Section 5 requires welded tube to be made with no filler metal — an autogenous longitudinal seam, then full-tube heat treatment. That is not the same product as filler-welded duplex pipe under SA-312, and the stencil must state the route plus average or minimum wall.
Seamless lots take flaring to at least 10% inside-diameter expansion. Welded lots take flange testing and reverse flattening on each 1500 ft [450 m] of finished tubing. Tension and hardness apply to both routes. SHH STEEL produces seamless and welded SA789 S32205 under those clauses and marks the route on tube and MTC.
Dimensions and Tolerances
Order SA789 S32205 by OD × wall (average unless minimum wall is specified) and length — tube and BWG language first, not B36.19 pipe schedules. Table 5 sets permissible variations by OD group; clause 12.2 covers thin-wall ovality when applicable.
| OD group (Table 5 summary) | OD tolerance | Avg / Min wall |
|---|---|---|
| Up to ½ in. excl. | ±0.005 in. [0.13 mm] | Avg ±15%; Min +30%/−0% |
| ½ to 1½ in. excl. | ±0.005 in. [0.13 mm] | Avg ±10%; Min +20%/−0% |
| 1½ to 3½ in. excl. | ±0.010 in. [0.25 mm] | Avg ±10%; Min +20%/−0% |
| 3½ to 5½ in. excl. | ±0.015 in. [0.38 mm] | Avg ±10%; Min +20%/−0% |
| 5½ to 8 in. incl. | ±0.030 in. [0.76 mm] | Avg ±10%; Min +20%/−0% |

Equivalent Grades
UNS S32205 under ASME SA-789 is the governing tubing designation for modern 2205 tube on this page. Shop language that says only “2205” may mean S32205 or the older S31803 — Code purchase orders should spell the UNS to remove that ambiguity.
| Designation | Notes |
|---|---|
| ASME SA789 / SA789M UNS S32205 | Governing Code Book tubing designation (modern 2205) |
| ASTM A789 / A789M UNS S32205 | Sister ASTM A789 S32205; dual-stencil on request |
| Common name | 2205 (confirm UNS — not automatic for S31803) |
| Related 22Cr | SA789 S31803 — wider N, lower TS/YS |
| Super duplex step-up | SA789 S32750, SA789 S32760 |
| Plate / sheet | A240 / SA240 (often also ordered as 2205 plate) |
Do not mark S31803 as S32205 unless the heat meets the tighter Mo/N bands and the 95/70 ksi tensile pair. See also SA789 S31803.
Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
Table 2 requires S32205 solution treatment at 1870–2010 °F [1020–1100 °C] with rapid cooling in air or water — the same temperature band as S31803. Rapid cooling after the soak is mandatory to limit sigma-phase and related intermetallics that hurt toughness and pitting resistance.
Seamless tubes may be quenched directly after hot forming when temperature is not below the minimum solution-treatment temperature. SHH STEEL delivers SA789 S32205 only in the Table 2 heat-treated condition, with the treatment record on the MTC for every certified length.
Corrosion Resistance
S32205 is the reference standard duplex for chloride stress-corrosion cracking resistance well above 304/316, with estimated PREN near 35.9 from mid-range Table 1 chemistry. That mid-30s PREN band covers a wide range of process waters, brackish cooling, and many chemical plant tube duties short of full seawater super-duplex design.
For seawater, sour, or PREN ≥40 specifications, step to SA789 S32750 or SA789 S32760 rather than stretching 2205. Prolonged elevated-temperature exposure can embrittle duplex ferrite (including the 475 °C mechanism); SA-789 warns about prolonged elevated-temperature embrittlement. Keep design temperature and post-weld practice inside the qualified window.
Applications of SA789 S32205 Tube
S32205 tube is the default 22Cr duplex choice for heat exchangers, process coolers, condensers, and Code general-service duplex tubing when modern 2205 chemistry is specified. Choose it when the datasheet names S32205 or clearly intends the tightened Mo/N 2205 row — not when it still locks S31803 without a substitution review.
| Application area | Typical use of S32205 tube | Selection note |
|---|---|---|
| Process heat exchangers | Chloride-leaning process and utility bundles | Workhorse 2205 PREN mid-30s |
| Cooling-water / condenser tubes | Brackish or treated waters needing SCC resistance | Not automatic seawater grade |
| Chemical process tubing | General corrosive SA-789 duplex service | Confirm temperature / chlorides |
| Code pressure-boundary tube | Section VIII equipment naming SA-789 S32205 | Keep ASME designation on PO/MTC |
Legacy S31803 drawings need a materials check before upgrading; seawater PREN ≥40 work should move to SA789 S32750.
Weldability
Tube-to-tubesheet and attachment welds on S32205 commonly use 2209-type duplex filler under a qualified WPS; the SA-789 welded tube product itself remains autogenous with no filler in the mill seam. Heat input, interpass temperature, and cooling rate control ferrite–austenite balance in the HAZ and weld metal.
Overheating or slow cooling promotes sigma and other intermetallics; under-alloying the weld metal can leave excess ferrite. Clean thoroughly after welding. SHH STEEL can discuss typical filler practice for S32205 tube work; the Code-stamped fabricator owns the WPS/PQR.
Surface Finishes
Standard mill delivery for ASME SA789 S32205 is heat-treated and pickled or otherwise descaled, leaving a clean finish suitable for inspection under Section 13. Slight oxidation is not scale; excessive mill scale is rejectable. Bright anneal, bore polish, or specified Ra are agreement items and must be written into the order.
Fouling-sensitive exchanger specs that quote Ra maxima are commercial finish overlays on SA-789 product, not automatic with the 2205 grade stamp. SHH STEEL quotes special finishes against the written enquiry.
Inspection and Testing
Base testing includes Table 1 heat analysis, Table 4 tension and hardness, flaring or flange tests by route, reverse flattening for welded tube, and hydro or NDE electric test on every length. Hydrostatic calculation uses the duplex factor 64000 (441.2). The manufacturer may choose hydro versus NDE unless the purchase order fixes the method.
Section 14 marking adds seamless-or-welded and average-or-minimum wall to the A1016 marking set. SHH STEEL’s EN 10204 3.1 MTC ties heat number, chemistry (including Mo and N inside the tightened bands), tensile/hardness, heat treatment, and test method to each length.
Packaging and Shipping
S32205 tube leaves SHH STEEL bundled, end-protected, and tagged with ASME SA789, UNS S32205, seamless or welded identity, OD × wall, heat number, and PO reference so site receiving can check the shipment before opening every certificate packet.
Export packing includes wrapped bundles or wooden cases for bright or small-bore material. Incoterms and document flow follow the order acknowledgment, with MTC packs accompanying or preceding cargo as agreed.
Why Choose SHH STEEL
SHH STEEL produces and supplies ASME SA789 UNS S32205 as manufactured Code Book 2205 tubing — seamless and welded (no filler metal) — with the tightened molybdenum and nitrogen bands reported honestly on the EN 10204 3.1 MTC. We do not quietly ship S31803 against an S32205 purchase order.
If the drawing still says S31803, we flag the chemistry and tensile differences and quote SA789 S31803 or S32205 as the buyer chooses. If PREN ≥40 is required, we redirect to SA789 S32750 or SA789 S32760. Dual SA-789/A789 marking and third-party inspection are available on request.
