ASTM A789 UNS S32001 Lean Duplex Stainless Steel Tube
What is ASTM A789 UNS S32001 Lean Duplex Stainless Steel Tube
ASTM A789 / A789M covers seamless and welded ferritic/austenitic stainless steel tubing for general corrosion service with particular emphasis on stress corrosion cracking resistance. UNS S32001 is a lean duplex grade listed in A789/A789M-24 Table 1 with carbon ≤0.030%, chromium 19.5–21.5%, nickel only 1.0–3.0%, manganese 4.00–6.00%, molybdenum 0.60% max, and nitrogen 0.05–0.17%. High manganese and nitrogen replace much of the nickel that a standard duplex would carry, which is why the family word on this page is Lean Duplex — strength stays in the duplex class while alloy cost and PREN sit below 2205.
SHH STEEL can produce and supply ASTM A789 UNS S32001 lean duplex stainless steel tube as seamless and welded product (welded without filler metal) in the usual heat-exchanger and process OD × wall / BWG band, with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates reporting ladle chemistry and tensile plus hardness. Dual A789/SA789 marking is issued only when both standards are named on the purchase order. Browse the family on the A789/A789M hub.
Shop talk may call this lean duplex or S32001 tube; those names do not replace the UNS on the stencil. Compare with other lean options such as A789 S32101 and A789 S32304, and with standard duplex A789 S32205 when Mo-driven crevice resistance is required. Plate: A240.
Chemical Composition of A789 S32001
Heat analysis must meet A789/A789M-24 Table 1. Product analysis uses A480/A480M annex tolerances when ordered.
| Element | Heat analysis, % |
|---|---|
| C | 0.030 max |
| Mn | 4.00–6.00 |
| P | 0.040 max |
| S | 0.030 max |
| Si | 1.00 max |
| Ni | 1.0–3.0 |
| Cr | 19.5–21.5 |
| Mo | 0.60 max |
| N | 0.05–0.17 |
| Cu | 1.00 max |
Mid-range PREN = Cr + 3.3Mo + 16N with Cr 20.5, Mo 0.30, N 0.11 is only about PREN ≈ 23–24 — firmly in the lean duplex screening band (Wikipedia cites lean PREN roughly 22–27). Molybdenum is a maximum of 0.60%, not a guaranteed working range, so chloride pitting performance is closer to higher-end austenitics than to Mo-bearing 2205. The Mn 4–6% window is the lean signature that stabilizes austenite alongside nitrogen while keeping nickel low.
Mechanical Properties of A789 S32001
Tensile and hardness floors come from A789’s tensile/hardness table (Table 4 in recent editions). That table was not in the public A789/A789M-24 sample; figures below are from older Table 4 reprints and must be reconfirmed on the PO edition.
| Property | Requirement (older A789 Table 4 copies) |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength, min | 90 ksi [620 MPa] |
| Yield strength (0.2% offset), min | 65 ksi [450 MPa] |
| Elongation in 2 in. or 50 mm, min | 25% |
| Hardness, max | 290 HBW / 30 HRC |
Even as a lean grade, the 65 ksi yield floor still roughly doubles annealed 304/316, which is the main mechanical reason buyers specify lean duplex tube when wall thickness or weight must come down without paying for full Mo duplex.
Seamless and Welded Tube
A789 Section 5 allows seamless or welded manufacture with no filler metal added. Seamless S32001 tube is typically hot-finished then cold-drawn to final OD and wall; welded tube is roll-formed from matching strip and autogenously welded, then usually cold-worked and re-annealed so the seam meets parent-metal heat treatment and mechanical floors.
Seamless lots take a flaring test (minimum 10% inside-diameter expansion); welded lots take a flange test plus a reverse flattening test on a specimen from each 1500 ft [450 m] of finished tubing. Tension and hardness sampling apply to both routes. SHH STEEL produces and supplies both seamless and welded A789 S32001 against the route named on the enquiry, with EN 10204 3.1 coverage of chemistry and mechanicals.
Dimensions and Tolerances
Average wall is the default under A789; specify minimum wall on the order when that is the design basis. Outside diameter and wall are ordered as tube sizes (metric or inch OD × wall / BWG). General dimensional requirements sit in Specification A1016/A1016M unless A789 states otherwise.
| Item | Typical enquiry practice for S32001 tube |
|---|---|
| Outside diameter | 12.7–76.2 mm common HX/process band; larger OD by agreement |
| Wall | Average wall default; minimum wall when named; BWG 10–20 class and metric equivalents |
| Length | Cut-to-length for exchanger bundles; mill random by agreement |
| Straightness / ovality | Per A1016/A1016M and any tighter project tolerance |
When converting a pipe schedule into tube wall, state clearly whether acceptance is average or minimum wall — the two are not interchangeable on the mill ticket. SHH STEEL confirms OD × wall, length, and finish before the heat is reserved.
Equivalent Grades
UNS S32001 is a lean duplex without a single dominant trade name in every market; confirm the UNS on every stencil. Sister product forms under the same UNS appear in ASTM pipe documents, but mechanical and HT tables differ by product form.
| System | Designation (indicative) |
|---|---|
| UNS | S32001 |
| Family | Lean duplex |
| ASTM tube | A789 / A789M S32001 |
| ASTM pipe (sister) | A790 / A790M S32001 when listed |
| ASME | SA789 S32001 when Code stamping is required |

Heat Treatment and Delivery Condition
A789/A789M-24 Table 2 lists UNS S32001 at 1800–1950 °F [982–1066 °C] with rapid cooling in water or by other means. Seamless tube may be quenched directly after hot forming while at or above the minimum solution temperature.
Rapid cooling still matters for lean duplex: intermetallic precipitation and 475 °C (885 °F) ferrite embrittlement remain real risks if the tube is held too long in the dangerous temperature bands. A789’s scope warns that these steels are susceptible to embrittlement if used for prolonged periods at elevated temperatures. SHH STEEL supplies S32001 solution-annealed and quenched per Table 2.
Corrosion Resistance
S32001 is specified for chloride SCC resistance better than 304/316 and for duplex-class strength at lean alloy cost — not for Mo-driven crevice performance. Mid-range PREN ≈23–24 sits with other lean grades and well below A789 S32205 or super duplex A789 S32750.
Use it in freshwater, mildly chloride-bearing process water, and structural or pressure tube where SCC of austenitics is the failure mode to beat. Do not substitute into a seawater crevice or high-PREN datasheet without a fresh corrosion review.
Applications of A789 S32001 Tube
Typical service includes water-treatment and desalination pretreatment tube, district-energy and HVAC heat-exchanger tube, chemical-process coolers in mild chloride duty, and general industry where lean duplex strength replaces heavier 304/316 walls. It is a cost-and-weight play, not a seawater super duplex substitute.
When the datasheet already freezes 2205 / S32205, ask before switching to S32001 — the Mo gap is intentional. SHH STEEL produces and supplies A789 S32001 for the enquiry sizes and can quote A789 S32205 on the same request if you need a side-by-side.
Weldability
Autogenous A789 welded tube must meet parent anneal and mechanicals without filler. Fabrication welds that use filler typically take lean or standard duplex consumables qualified for the lean base metal, with controlled heat input so ferrite–austenite balance stays inside the WPS window. Re-anneal after heavy hot work when required; keep bake cycles out of the sigma and 475 °C bands unless the procedure says otherwise.
Surface Finishes
Standard delivery is solution-annealed and pickled (or otherwise descaled) so the passive film can form uniformly. Bright-annealed or lightly polished OD/ID finishes are available by agreement when the exchanger or hygienic duty needs a smoother bore. Passivation after pickling or after fabrication welding is good practice in chloride service; remove carbon-steel tooling contamination before commissioning. SHH STEEL states the finish route on the quotation and on the MTC.
Inspection and Testing
Each A789 tube takes either a nondestructive electric test or a hydrostatic test. Mechanical sampling covers tension, hardness, and flaring for seamless or flange plus reverse flattening for welded, with full heat analysis on the mill test certificate. Product analysis and supplementary corrosion or ferrite tests are added when the purchase order asks for them. SHH STEEL issues EN 10204 3.1 as standard and arranges third-party inspection / 3.2 when the enquiry names an agency, with lot identity per A789 Notes 1 and 2.
Packaging and Shipping
Tube is typically packed in hexagonal bundles or plywood cases with end protectors and waterproof wrapping for ocean freight, with bundle tags repeating heat number, size, and standard. Cut-to-length exchanger tube may be boxed by length group; U-bends travel in purpose-built crates when ordered. SHH STEEL ships FOB, CFR, CIF, or EXW under the Incoterm on the order, with commercial invoice, packing list, and the EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certificate set.
