What is AISI 304LN Stainless Steel Plate?

As a professional China steel mill-Direct Supply and stainless steel plate supplier, SHH STEEL is pleased to present AISI 304LN Stainless Steel Plate.

AISI 304LN (UNS S30453) is an optimized variant of the classic 304 family that combines two important improvements: extra-low carbon content (maximum 0.03%) and intentional nitrogen addition. The low carbon provides excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding, while the nitrogen significantly increases yield and tensile strength compared with standard 304L.

This dual enhancement makes AISI 304LN particularly suitable for welded constructions that also require higher mechanical strength. The grade remains fully austenitic, non-magnetic in the annealed condition, and offers good formability and toughness.

SHH STEEL supplies AISI 304LN as true China steel mill-Direct Supply, sourcing directly from major Chinese stainless steel mills. This model delivers competitive mill pricing, consistent quality, complete heat traceability and reliable delivery. SHH STEEL offers AISI 304LN in plate and sheet form across a practical range of thicknesses and surface finishes.

AISI 304LN is frequently compared with a240 304, a240 304l, a240 304n, a240 316l and a240 321 when projects require both higher strength and excellent as-welded performance. SHH STEEL provides technical support to help customers select the most suitable grade.

Chemical Composition

Typical Chemical Composition of AISI 304LN (UNS S30453):

ElementContent (%)
Carbon (C)≤ 0.030
Silicon (Si)≤ 1.00
Manganese (Mn)≤ 2.00
Phosphorus (P)≤ 0.045
Sulfur (S)≤ 0.030
Chromium (Cr)18.00 – 20.00
Nickel (Ni)8.00 – 12.00
Nitrogen (N)0.10 – 0.16
Iron (Fe)Balance

The combination of extra-low carbon (≤ 0.03%) and elevated nitrogen (0.10–0.16%) is the defining feature of AISI 304LN. Low carbon ensures excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding, while nitrogen provides solid-solution strengthening that raises both yield and tensile strength. SHH STEEL carefully controls both elements to deliver consistent performance.

Mechanical Properties

Annealed Condition (typical values)

PropertyValue
Tensile Strength≥ 550 MPa
Yield Strength (0.2%)≥ 240 MPa
Elongation (in 50 mm)≥ 35–40%
Hardness≤ 217 HB

AISI 304LN offers higher strength than standard a240 304l while retaining the excellent ductility and toughness expected from the 304 family. The higher strength can allow thickness reduction in many designs. SHH STEEL supplies material with consistent nitrogen-enhanced mechanical properties.

Physical Properties

  • Density: approximately 7.93 g/cm³
  • Magnetic Response: Non-magnetic in the annealed condition
  • Melting Range: approximately 1400–1450°C

AISI 316L≤ 0.03LowStandardExcellentBetter pitting resistanceChloride environments
AISI 321≤ 0.08LowStandardGood (stabilized)High-temperature welded serviceElevated-temperature welding

AISI 304LN is the preferred choice when both higher strength and excellent as-welded resistance to intergranular corrosion are required. When only higher strength is needed without extensive welding, a240 304n may be sufficient. For improved pitting resistance, SHH STEEL recommends a240 316l.

Corrosion Resistance

AISI 304LN offers corrosion resistance essentially equivalent to standard AISI 304 and 304L in most environments. It performs well in atmospheric conditions, fresh water, food products and many mild to moderate chemical media.

The low carbon content provides excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding. The nitrogen addition has a neutral to slightly beneficial effect on pitting resistance. In chloride-containing service, however, AISI 304LN remains susceptible to pitting and stress corrosion cracking. For such conditions, SHH STEEL recommends upgrading to a240 316l or a240 2205.

Weldability

AISI 304LN has excellent weldability. The extra-low carbon content minimizes the risk of intergranular corrosion in the as-welded condition, while the nitrogen contributes to higher strength in both the base metal and the weld zone when proper filler metals are used.

Matching or 308L-type filler metals are commonly employed. Post-weld annealing is generally not required. This combination of higher strength and outstanding as-welded performance is the main reason SHH STEEL recommends AISI 304LN for demanding welded constructions.

Heat Treatment

AISI 304LN is normally supplied in the solution-annealed condition by SHH STEEL.

Recommended Solution Annealing Parameters

  • Temperature range: 1010 – 1120°C
  • Cooling: Rapid cooling (water quench preferred)

Proper solution annealing is important to retain nitrogen in solid solution and to optimize both strength and corrosion resistance. SHH STEEL controls heat treatment to ensure consistent performance.

SHH STEEL regularly supplies AISI 304LN in 2B and No.1 finishes, and can provide other finishes according to project requirements.

Tolerances

Dimensional tolerances for AISI 304LN Stainless Steel Plate supplied by SHH STEEL generally conform to ASTM A480 practices.

Typical available size range:

  • Thickness: 0.5 mm – 80 mm
  • Width: up to 2000–3000 mm
  • Length: up to 12000 mm or cut-to-length

SHH STEEL provides precise dimensional control and can support tighter tolerances when required.
