AISI 422 Stainless Steel Plate | UNS S42200 | 12Cr-Mo-W-V Plate | UNS S42200 | 12Cr-Mo-W-V
What is AISI 422 Stainless Steel?
As a professional China steel mill-Direct Supply and stainless steel plate supplier, SHH STEEL is pleased to present AISI 422 Stainless Steel Plate.
AISI 422 is widely known and searched under many different names and designations, including AISI 422, UNS S42200, Type 422, 422 stainless steel, 422 stainless steel plate, ASTM A565 Grade 616, 12Cr-Mo-W-V and high-temperature martensitic 422. All these names refer to the same modified 12% chromium martensitic steel alloyed with molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium and a small nickel addition.
AISI 422 is not a simple high-carbon 410 or 420. The Mo-W-V combination provides high tempered hardness and useful creep strength in steam-turbine temperature ranges. The grade remains magnetic and is supplied annealed or heat treated according to the specification.
Typical uses include steam-turbine blades, high-temperature fasteners, discs, valve parts and other components that must keep strength after long exposure to elevated temperature. Corrosion resistance is in the 12% Cr family, similar to A240 410, not to austenitic 304/310.
SHH STEEL supplies AISI 422 as true China steel mill-Direct Supply, sourcing directly from major Chinese stainless steel mills. This model delivers competitive mill pricing, consistent quality, complete heat traceability and reliable delivery.
AISI 422 is frequently compared with A240 410, A240 410S, A240 430, a240 310s, a240 309s and a240 304. SHH STEEL provides technical support to help customers choose the most appropriate grade.

Chemical Composition
Typical Chemical Composition of AISI 422 (UNS S42200):
| Element | Content (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.20 – 0.25 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 0.50 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.50 – 1.00 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.025 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.025 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 11.00 – 13.50 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 0.50 – 1.00 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 0.75 – 1.25 |
| Tungsten (W) | 0.75 – 1.25 |
| Vanadium (V) | 0.20 – 0.30 |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance |
The defining features of AISI 422 are carbon around 0.20–0.25% plus Mo, W and V in a 12% Cr martensitic base. These alloying elements give secondary hardening and better strength retention at steam-turbine temperatures than plain 410 or 420. Residuals are kept low for high-integrity rotating parts. SHH STEEL carefully controls this multi-alloy chemistry
Mechanical Properties
Typical Heat-Treated / Specified Values
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Condition | Quenched and tempered as specified |
| Tensile Strength | High, according to tempering temperature |
| Yield Strength | High, retained at elevated temperature |
| Hardness | Controlled by tempering practice |
AISI 422 is usually specified in a quenched-and-tempered condition for turbine and high-temperature fastener service. Annealed plate can be supplied for subsequent machining and heat treatment. SHH STEEL supplies the mechanical condition named on the purchase order.
Physical Properties
Density is approximately 7.75–7.80 g/cm³. The grade is magnetic in all common heat-treated conditions. Useful high-temperature strength is typically in the steam-turbine range around 540–650°C, depending on design stress and time.
Material Comparison
| Grade | UNS | Extra Alloy | High-Temp Strength | Typical Preference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AISI 410 | S41000 | — | Moderate | General 12% Cr wear / valves |
| AISI 420 | S42000 | Higher C | Moderate | Cutlery and high hardness |
| AISI 422 | S42200 | Mo + W + V + Ni | High | Steam turbine blades / HT fasteners |
| AISI 410S | S41008 | Low carbon | Low | Welded 12% Cr constructions |
| AISI 310S | S31008 | 25Cr-20Ni | Excellent oxidation | Severe oxidizing atmospheres |
| AISI 304 | S30400 | Austenitic | Lower strength | General corrosion resistance |
AISI 422 is selected when 12% Cr corrosion resistance must be combined with high tempered strength at elevated temperature. It is not a substitute for a240 310s in severe oxidizing furnace service, and it is not a substitute for A240 410S in heavily welded constructions.
Corrosion Resistance
AISI 422 offers moderate corrosion resistance similar to other 12% chromium martensitic steels. Best performance is obtained after heat treatment with a clean, passive surface.
It resists steam, mild atmospheres and many power-generation environments. It is not equivalent to a240 304 or a240 316l in chloride service. For high-temperature oxidation rather than high-temperature strength, SHH STEEL compares a240 309s and a240 310s.
Weldability
AISI 422 has limited weldability because of its carbon content and hardenable martensitic structure. Preheat and post-weld heat treatment are normally required.
Matching or approved martensitic fillers are selected according to the turbine or fastener specification. If extensive welding of soft plate is required, SHH STEEL recommends A240 410S.
Heat Treatment
AISI 422 is a quench-and-temper grade.
Typical hardening is performed from about 1025–1050°C, followed by oil or air cooling and double tempering to develop secondary hardening from Mo, W and V. Final hardness and toughness depend on the specified tempering practice. SHH STEEL can supply annealed plate for later heat treatment or QT material when the drawing requires it.
Surface Finishes
| Finish | Description | Typical Use / Keywords |
|---|---|---|
| No.1 | Hot-rolled, annealed and pickled | AISI 422 No.1 – industrial plate |
| 2B | Cold-rolled, annealed, pickled, skin-passed | AISI 422 2B – thinner plate |
| Ground | Precision ground | AISI 422 ground – turbine and fastener stock |
SHH STEEL supplies AISI 422 in the finish required by the machining or turbine specification.
Tolerances
Dimensional tolerances for AISI 422 plate supplied by SHH STEEL generally conform to ASTM A480 practices.
Typical available size range is thickness 1 mm – 80 mm, width up to 1500–2000 mm, and length up to 6000–12000 mm or cut-to-length. SHH STEEL provides precise dimensional control and can support tighter tolerances when required.
