AISI 316LN is the preferred choice when both higher strength and excellent as-welded resistance to intergranular corrosion are required in chloride environments. Compared with a240 316n, the low carbon content provides superior performance after welding. For significantly higher strength and chloride resistance, SHH STEEL recommends evaluating a240 2205.

Corrosion Resistance

AISI 316LN offers corrosion resistance essentially equivalent to standard AISI 316 and 316L in most environments. The molybdenum addition provides superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing media, while the low carbon content ensures excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding. Nitrogen has a neutral to slightly beneficial effect on pitting resistance.

It performs well in chemical processing, marine atmospheres, pharmaceutical and food applications. In highly concentrated chlorides or at elevated temperatures, pitting or stress corrosion cracking can still occur. For more severe chloride service, SHH STEEL recommends a240 317l or a240 2205.

Weldability

AISI 316LN has excellent weldability. The extra-low carbon content minimizes the risk of intergranular corrosion in the as-welded condition, while the nitrogen contributes to higher strength in both the base metal and the weld zone when proper filler metals are used.

Matching or 316L-type filler metals are commonly employed. Post-weld annealing is generally not required. This combination of higher strength and outstanding as-welded performance is the main reason SHH STEEL recommends AISI 316LN for demanding welded constructions in chloride service.

Heat Treatment

AISI 316LN is normally supplied in the solution-annealed condition by SHH STEEL.
