Conclusion

What is GB/T 4237 07Cr19Ni10 (S30409) stainless steel plate?

07Cr19Ni10 is the high-carbon 304H of GB/T 4237: carbon 0.04–0.10% and a higher solution temperature (≥1 095 °C in Annex C) give a coarser grain and better creep strength above 500 °C. It is the grade boiler and refinery designers use when 304 must carry load hot.

How to read the name: under GB/T 20878 the leading ’07’ is the carbon code (here C 0.04–0.10%), then Cr19 = about 19% chromium; Ni10 = about 10% nickel. S30409 is the unified numeric code (ISC) used in GB/T 4237-2015.

SHH STEEL produces and exports austenitic stainless plate from China, works as a sales agent for leading stainless mills, and runs its own processing warehouse for cutting and surface finishing. 07Cr19Ni10 is part of our GB/T 4237 stainless plate range; for comparison, see our ASTM A240 Type 304H page.

Heat analysis limits for 07Cr19Ni10

Element07Cr19Ni10 heat analysis, % (Table 15)Why it matters
C0.04 – 0.10Carbon. Low values protect welds from carbide precipitation; higher values add hot strength or hardenability.
Si≤ 0.75Silicon. Deoxidizer; in heat-resistant grades it builds a protective scale.
Mn≤ 2.00Manganese. Deoxidizer; in Mn-bearing grades it replaces nickel and keeps nitrogen in solution.
P≤ 0.045Phosphorus. Impurity, kept low for toughness and weld cracking resistance.
S≤ 0.030Sulfur. Impurity; low sulfur improves pitting resistance, hot workability and polishability.
Cr18.00 – 20.00Chromium. Forms the passive film; the main driver of corrosion and oxidation resistance.
Ni8.00 – 10.50Nickel. Stabilizes austenite, improves toughness and resistance to reducing acids.
PREN (Cr + 3.3Mo + 16N)18.0 – 19.0 (minimum – mid-range)Calculated from the limits above, not a requirement of GB/T 4237

Values are maximum unless a range is given. The mill reports the ladle (heat) analysis on the certificate; this is the figure to compare with Table 15.

Product analysis vs heat analysis

A check analysis drilled from the finished plate may differ slightly from the heat analysis. GB/T 4237 refers to GB/T 222 for the permitted deviations; the table applies them to the 07Cr19Ni10 limits. Deviations apply to one side of a range only, never to both sides in the same heat.

ElementHeat analysis limit (%)Permitted deviationProduct analysis limit (%)
C0.04 – 0.10±0.010.030 – 0.11
Si≤ 0.75±0.05≤ 0.80
Mn≤ 2.00±0.04≤ 2.04
P≤ 0.045+0.010≤ 0.055
S≤ 0.030+0.005≤ 0.035

Ni8.00 – 10.50±0.10 (min) / ±0.15 (max)7.90 – 10.65

Where the table says ‘by agreement’, the deviation is not tabulated for that content level and should be agreed in the contract, usually by reference to ASTM A480 Table A1.1.

Strength minimums apply to solution-treated plate tested transverse to rolling. Actual mill results are usually well above these minimums and are reported on the certificate.

Choosing the right variant of the family

Each 18-8 base grade in GB/T 4237 comes in several variants. L (C ≤0.030%) is for welded parts in corrosive service, H (C 0.04–0.10%) for creep strength, N for higher strength.

Order grain size with the plate. GB/T 4237-2015 clause 6.6 lets the buyer require grain size grade 7 or coarser for 07Cr19Ni10; ASME code design stresses for 304H assume that coarse grain. The same carbon that gives creep strength makes the grade sensitive to intergranular attack after welding, so do not use it in wet corrosive service.

How 07Cr19Ni10 performs in corrosive service

Austenitic 18-8 grades resist atmospheric corrosion, fresh water, foods, nitric acid and most organic acids. They are vulnerable to chlorides (pitting, crevice and stress corrosion cracking above about 60 °C).

PREN of 07Cr19Ni10 from the GB/T 4237 limits: 18.0 – 19.0. PREN is a ranking tool for pitting in chlorides, not a guarantee; temperature, crevices, deposits and weld finish matter as much.

Intergranular corrosion: GB/T 4237-2015 Table 30 lists this grade for the copper–copper sulfate–sulfuric acid test (GB/T 4334 Method E) in the solution-treated condition. When the order calls for it, bent specimens must show no intergranular cracks.

If service is harsher than 07Cr19Ni10 can handle, the next step up in this batch is GB/T 4237 07Cr17Ni12Mo2 S31609.

Heat treatment and delivery condition

Recommended heat treatment for 07Cr19Ni10 (GB/T 4237-2015 Annex C): ≥ 1 095 °C, water quench or other rapid cooling.

Solution treatment dissolves carbides and restores full corrosion resistance and ductility. Hot forming should finish above about 900 °C and be followed by a new solution anneal if the part is used in corrosive service.

Fabrication guidance

Austenitic 18-8 plate welds well with every arc process (SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, SAW, FCAW). Use ER308L/E308L filler for 304 and 304L, ER347 where the joint must resist sensitization at high carbon, and ER308H for H grades.

Keep interpass temperature below about 150 °C, avoid preheat, and remove heat tint by pickling or brushing with stainless brushes. Distortion is higher than with carbon steel because thermal expansion is about 50% greater and conductivity much lower; plan tacking sequence and fixtures.

Cold forming: austenitic plate bends to tight radii (inside radius ≈ thickness for most gauges) but springs back more than carbon steel.

Supply chain and lead time

07Cr19Ni10 is a mainstream grade at Chinese stainless mills. We supply it from our own stock and processing warehouse, and by mill order from major producers such as TISCO and Baosteel Stainless, for which we act as a sales agent. Stock plate ships in about 1–2 weeks after cutting; mill orders typically take 30–60 days depending on thickness and rolling schedule.

Every plate is traceable to its heat number, and copies of the mill certificates stay on file for repeat orders and audits. The same mills also supply our ASTM A240, ASME SA240, JIS G4305 and AISI plate ranges, so mixed-standard orders can ship together.

Why buy from SHH STEEL

  • Mill-direct prices with our own export documentation
  • Own processing warehouse: cutting, bevelling, polishing, PVC film
  • PMI and dimensional check before packing
  • Mixed-grade shipments across our AISI stainless and GB/T plate ranges
  • Technical answers from people who read the standard, not just the price list

SHH STEEL has exported stainless and carbon steel plate to buyers in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and the Americas.

FAQ

Why does 07Cr19Ni10 need a grain size test?
Creep strength of 304H depends on a coarse austenite grain. GB/T 4237-2015 clause 6.6 allows the purchaser to specify a grain size of grade 7 or coarser (GB/T 6394) for 07Cr19Ni10, 07Cr17Ni12Mo2, 07Cr19Ni11Ti and 07Cr18Ni11Nb. Put it in the order if the plate is for pressure parts above about 500 °C.
What is the chemical composition of 07Cr19Ni10?
Under GB/T 4237-2015 Table 15, 07Cr19Ni10 (S30409) has C 0.04 – 0.10, Cr 18.00 – 20.00, Ni 8.00 – 10.50. Phosphorus is limited to ≤0.045% and sulfur to ≤0.030%.
What is the ASTM equivalent of 07Cr19Ni10?
The closest equivalents of 07Cr19Ni10 (S30409) are Type 304H / S30409 in ASTM, X6CrNi18-10 / 1.4948 (EN 10028-7) in EN (common name: 304H). Chemistry limits differ slightly, so dual certification depends on the actual heat.
What are the mechanical properties of 07Cr19Ni10 plate?
GB/T 4237-2015 Table 20 requires for 07Cr19Ni10: proof strength Rp0.2 ≥205 MPa, tensile strength ≥515 MPa and elongation ≥40%, hardness ≤201 HBW. Values apply to plate in the delivery heat-treated condition.
Is 07Cr19Ni10 stainless steel magnetic?
Not in the annealed condition. 07Cr19Ni10 is austenitic, so annealed plate is essentially non-magnetic; cold work can induce slight magnetism, mostly at cut and bent edges.
What thickness of 07Cr19Ni10 plate can you supply?
Under GB/T 4237 we supply 07Cr19Ni10 hot-rolled plate in 3 – 120 mm (to 200 mm by mill order), widths up to 2 000 mm (wider by mill order), cut to size in our warehouse. Thinner material is cold-rolled sheet to GB/T 3280.

Conclusion

GB/T 4237 07Cr19Ni10 (S30409) is a 18-8 chromium-nickel austenitic plate grade, known internationally as 304H. It is defined by Table 15 chemistry (C 0.04 – 0.10, Cr 18.00 – 20.00, Ni 8.00 – 10.50) and Table 20 properties of at least 205 MPa proof strength and 515 MPa tensile strength. Typical uses include boiler and superheater components, headers and support plates, refinery and petrochemical heater internals and pressure vessel shells in high-temperature service. Order grain size with the plate.
