What is ASTM A515 Grade 60 Steel?

ASTM A515 Grade 60 is the lowest-strength current grade in ASTM A515/A515M. Buyers use it when the calculation only needs 220 MPa yield and the service is intermediate- to higher-temperature, not low-temperature toughness. SHH STEEL supplies it as China mill-Direct Supply.

The same plate is written A515 Gr.60, A515GR60, A515 Grade 60, A515Gr60, A515Gr.60N, ASME SA515 Grade 60, SA515 Gr.60, SA515GR60 and SA-515 Grade 60. A515Gr.60N is not a separate ASTM grade. The “N” is mill shorthand for normalized delivery, which is how most thick A515 Grade 60 plate is sold. ASTM A515/A515M is the product specification. ASME SA-515/SA-515M is the Code companion.

Minimum yield is 220 MPa (32 ksi). Tensile strength is 415–550 MPa (60–80 ksi). The steel is killed carbon-silicon plate made to coarse austenitic grain practice. That is the job of A515: intermediate- and higher-temperature service in welded boilers and other pressure vessels.

Do not treat A515Gr.60N as ASTM A516 or ASME SA516. A516 is fine-grain plate for moderate- and lower-temperature work. A515 is the high-temperature carbon-silicon route. It is also not Mn-Mo plate such as A302, and not Cr-Mo plate such as ASME SA387.

General requirements follow ASTM A20 / ASME SA-20. For Code work the plate is dual-certified to ASME SA515 Grade 60 and used under ASME Section VIII. Certificates can be EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2.

When a project is still choosing carbon vessel plate, we put ASTM A515 Grade 60 next to ASME SA537, ASTM A537, ASME SA515 and ASTM A285, so temperature, grain practice and strength can be checked in one conversation.

Chemical Composition

Chemistry for ASTM A515 Grade 60 is reported as heat analysis and, when specified, product analysis under ASTM A515/A515M.

ASTM A515 allows a carbon–manganese trade: for each 0.01% carbon below the stated maximum, manganese may rise 0.06%, up to 1.50% on heat analysis and 1.60% on product analysis. That note matters on thick A515Gr.60N plate. Grade 60 carbon is lower than Grade 70, which is why forming and preheat are usually easier. SHH STEEL reports ladle analysis on every certificate and adds product analysis when the PO asks for it.

Mechanical Properties

Tensile Requirements — ASTM A515 Grade 60 per ASTM A515/A515M

PropertyRequirement
Tensile strength415 – 550 MPa (60 – 80 ksi)
Yield strength, min220 MPa (32 ksi)
Elongation in 200 mm (8 in.), min21%
Elongation in 50 mm (2 in.), min25%

Grade 60 is easier to form than Grade 70 because the tensile ceiling is lower and the elongation minima are higher. Density is 7.85 g/cm³. Specimens follow ASTM A20. If the vessel specification wants simulated PWHT, coupons from the same ASTM A515 Grade 60 heat go through that cycle before tensile and impact testing.

Material Comparison

A515 Gr.70485–620 MPa260 MPaDefault high-temp carbon plate
A516 Gr.60415–550 MPa220 MPaSame numbers, fine-grain / colder service

A515GR60 and A516 Gr.60 look the same on a strength table. They do not share grain practice or intended temperature. Stay on ASTM A515 Grade 60 when the drawing is high-temperature boiler work. Use A516 when notch toughness at lower temperature is the reason for the spec. If the calculation needs 260 MPa yield, move to A515 Grade 70 rather than stretching Grade 60. Carbon QT options remain ASTM A537 and ASME SA537. HSLA Steel Plates are not a Code substitute.

High-Temperature Vessel Service

ASTM A515 Grade 60 is written for intermediate- and higher-temperature welded boilers and vessels. When dual certified to ASME SA515 Grade 60, allowable stress comes from ASME Section II Part D, not from a mill brochure.

Charpy testing is not automatic on A515 Grade 60. If the datasheet sets an impact temperature, SHH STEEL puts those sets on the A515Gr.60N certificate. This plate is not a stand-in for A203 nickel plate, and it is not a stand-in for A516 when MDMT controls the design.

Weldability

ASTM A515GR60 is a P-No. 1 carbon vessel plate and welds with low-hydrogen procedures. For Code work, procedures are qualified to ASME Section IX. Carbon is lower than Grade 70, so preheat is usually milder in the same thickness. Thick, restrained joints still need a written WPS.

When Section VIII requires PWHT, the shop cycle is the carbon-steel range in UCS-56. If properties after that cycle matter, ask for simulated PWHT coupons with the mill plate. Procedure review can go through steel welding services.

Heat Treatment

ASTM A515 does not force quench and temper. Thin ASTM A515 Grade 60 is often as-rolled. Plates over about 50 mm are usually normalized, which is why buyers search A515Gr.60N.

If the PO says “N” or “normalized,” that condition is written on the mill instruction and on the certificate. Do not apply A537 Class 2 quench-and-temper practice unless the specification itself changes.

Delivery Condition

SHH STEEL ships A515Gr.60N as-rolled or normalized, as ordered, with the condition printed on the MTC.

The certificate lists ASTM A515 Grade 60 and, when dual certified, ASME SA515 Grade 60; heat number; heat analysis; product analysis when ordered; tensile results; heat-treatment condition; and extra tests. Surface is vessel-plate quality—pickled or shot-blasted if requested—not 2B or BA.

Certificates may be EN 10204 3.1 or EN 10204 3.2. BV, LR, DNV, TUV, SGS or the buyer’s agency can witness when the order says so.

Dimensions

Usual supply range for ASTM A515 Grade 60 / A515Gr.60N high temp vessel plate:

  • Thickness: 6 mm – 150 mm (heavier by enquiry)
  • Width: up to about 4600 mm
  • Length: up to about 12000 mm

State thickness and whether the plate is A515Gr.60N (normalized) on the PO. Shell and head nest cutting is available.

Tolerances

Dimensional limits follow ASTM A20 / ASME SA-20. Thickness, width, length, flatness and camber are vessel-plate tolerances. Extra-flat or restricted-thickness plate is accepted when the drawing needs it. UT to A435 or A578 is added when specified. Finished sizes go through steel cutting services.

Supplementary Requirements

Most ASTM A515 Grade 60 orders add something beyond the base tensile table.

Simulated PWHT. Same-heat coupons follow the vessel cycle.
NDE. UT to A435 / A577 / A578; edge MT/PT after cutting if required.
Impact. Temperature, orientation and energy as written on the RFQ.
Hardness. HBW or HV window after rolling or after simulated PWHT.
Restricted chemistry. Tighter C, P, S or CE.
HIC / NACE. Only when the datasheet cites TM0284 or MR0175 / ISO 15156.
Z-direction. A770 or Z15/Z25/Z35 for thick nozzles.
Third-party. Witness points and EN 10204 3.2.

These tests run through steel testing service. If it is not on the purchase order, it is not assumed.

Why Choose SHH STEEL

SHH STEEL is a China mill-Direct Supply for ASTM A515/A515M plate. On ASTM A515 Grade 60 that means mill pricing, dual A515/SA515 marking, heat and product analysis, 3.1 as standard and 3.2 when specified, as-rolled or A515Gr.60N normalized delivery, and the extra tests a vessel shop actually writes on the PO.

We also keep the order on the right spec: A515 versus A516 when temperature and grain practice are the real decision, and Grade 60 versus 65/70 inside A515. Export packing goes through worldwide shipping service. Company scope: China steel Mill Agent-SHH STEEL.

FAQ

What is ASTM A515 Grade 60, and why do buyers also write A515Gr.60N?
ASTM A515 Grade 60 is the 415–550 MPa carbon-silicon plate in ASTM A515/A515M. A515Gr.60N is the same grade with normalized delivery. SHH STEEL prints ASTM A515 Grade 60 or A515Gr.60N exactly as the purchase order reads.
Is ASTM A515 Grade 60 the same as ASME SA515 Grade 60 / SA515GR60?
Chemistry and tensile limits match. ASTM A515 is the product spec. ASME SA-515 is the Code version used with ASME Section VIII. SHH STEEL dual-certifies A515 Grade 60 / SA515 Grade 60 when the vessel must be stamped.
What is the difference between ASTM A515 Grade 60 and ASTM A515 Grade 70?
ASTM A515 Grade 60 requires 220 MPa yield and 415–550 MPa tensile. Grade 70 requires 260 MPa yield and 485–620 MPa tensile. Grade 70 also allows higher carbon and manganese. Do not substitute A515GR70 for Grade 60 without checking the calculation.
Can A515Gr.60N replace ASTM A516 Grade 60?
Not automatically. Strength looks similar. ASTM A515 Grade 60 is coarse-grain high-temperature plate. A516 Grade 60 is fine-grain plate for moderate- and lower-temperature service. Follow the spec on the drawing.
Does ASTM A515 Grade 60 always have to be A515Gr.60N normalized?
No. Thinner A515 Grade 60 is often as-rolled. Over about 50 mm, mills normally normalize, which is why A515Gr.60N is a common search. Write “normalized” on the PO if the vessel specification requires it.
Can welding of ASTM A515 Grade 60 be qualified to ASME Section IX?
Yes, when the plate is used on an ASME vessel. A515GR60 is a welded boiler and vessel plate. Use a Grade 60 WPS. The fabricator owns the procedure.
Can SHH STEEL issue EN 10204 3.2 on ASTM A515 Grade 60 / A515Gr.60N?
Yes. EN 10204 3.1 is standard. EN 10204 3.2 or another third-party stamp is arranged when it is written on the order.
What is the density of ASTM A515 Grade 60 plate?
7.85 g/cm³. SHH STEEL uses this value for shipping-weight estimates on ASTM A515/A515M plate.
