ASTM A240 Type 420 | UNS S42035 Stainless steel plate
What is A240 Type 420 or UNS S42035 Stainless steel?
As a professional China steel mill-Direct Supply and stainless steel plate supplier, SHH STEEL is pleased to present A240 Type 420 | UNS S42035 Stainless Steel Plate.
This product family is searched under several names. Buyers should distinguish two related but different A240 grades:
- ASTM A240 Type 420 / AISI 420 / UNS S42000 / SUS420 / 1.4021 / 1.4028 / X20Cr13 / X30Cr13 — the classic high-carbon martensitic 12–14% Cr grade used for cutlery, tools and wear parts.
- ASTM A240 UNS S42035 / S42035 plate / 1.4589 / X5CrNiMoTi15-2 / 06Cr14Ni2MoTi — a separate A240 grade with low carbon (≤ 0.08%), 13.5–15.5% chromium, 1.0–2.5% nickel, 0.2–1.2% molybdenum and 0.3–0.5% titanium.
SHH STEEL focuses on UNS S42035, which is listed in ASTM A240 / ASME SA240 without a traditional AISI Type number. It is often grouped commercially with the 420 family, but it is not the same as Type 420 (S42000). S42035 is a titanium-stabilized, low-carbon chromium stainless steel designed for better weldability and improved corrosion resistance compared with standard 420, while remaining magnetic.
SHH STEEL supplies UNS S42035 as true China steel mill-Direct Supply, sourcing directly from major Chinese stainless steel mills. This model delivers competitive mill pricing, consistent quality, complete heat traceability and reliable delivery. SHH STEEL also supports related 400-series plates such as A240 410, A240 410S, A240 430 and A240 439.
If your drawing specifies Type 420 / S42000, please state the UNS number clearly so SHH STEEL can quote the correct grade.

Chemical Composition
Typical Chemical Composition of UNS S42035 (ASTM A240):
| Element | Content (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.08 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 1.00 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 1.00 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.045 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.030 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 13.50 – 15.50 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 1.00 – 2.50 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 0.20 – 1.20 |
| Titanium (Ti) | 0.30 – 0.50 |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance |
UNS S42035 is defined by low carbon, titanium stabilization, plus nickel and molybdenum. Titanium combines with carbon to reduce the risk of intergranular corrosion after welding. Nickel improves toughness, and molybdenum improves pitting resistance versus plain 12–13% Cr grades. This chemistry is clearly different from Type 420 (S42000), which requires a minimum of 0.15% carbon and is intended for hardening.
Mechanical Properties
Annealed Condition per ASTM A240 (UNS S42035)
| Property | Value |

| Yield Strength (0.2%) | ≥ 380 MPa (55 ksi) |
| Elongation (in 50 mm) | ≥ 16% |
| Hardness | ≤ 180 HBW / 88 HRBW |
S42035 is supplied by SHH STEEL in the annealed condition with the A240 minimum strength values above. It is magnetic. Unlike standard Type 420, it is not specified as a high-carbon hardenable cutlery grade.
Physical Properties
Density is approximately 7.70–7.80 g/cm³. Melting range is approximately 1480–1530°C.
Material Comparison
| rade | UNS | Carbon | Key Alloying | Hardenable | Typical Preference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Type 410 | S41000 | ≤ 0.15 | 11.5–13.5 Cr | Yes | General martensitic service |
| Type 420 | S42000 | ≥ 0.15 | 12–14 Cr | Yes | Cutlery, wear, high hardness |
| S42035 | S42035 | ≤ 0.08 | 13.5–15.5 Cr + Ni + Mo + Ti | No (A240 annealed) | Welded plate with better corrosion |
| Type 430 | S43000 | ≤ 0.12 | 16–18 Cr | No | General ferritic service |
| Type 439 | S43035 | ≤ 0.07 | 17–19 Cr + Ti | No | Stabilized ferritic / exhaust |
| Type 444 | S44400 | ≤ 0.025 | 17.5–19.5 Cr + Mo + Ti/Nb | No | Higher chloride ferritic service |
S42035 should not be substituted for Type 420 when high hardness after quench and temper is required. For wear and cutting applications, SHH STEEL recommends confirming whether the drawing means S42000. For welded plate needing better corrosion than A240 410 or A240 410S, S42035 is the correct A240 option. For higher chromium ferritic service, compare with A240 430, A240 439 and A240 444.
Corrosion Resistance
UNS S42035 offers better general and pitting resistance than standard 410/420 because of its higher chromium, molybdenum and titanium stabilization. It performs well in mild atmospheres, fresh water, many food-contact and automotive environments, and welded fabrications where intergranular attack must be avoided.
It is not equivalent to austenitic grades such as a240 304 or a240 316l in chloride or acid service. For more aggressive chlorides, SHH STEEL recommends upgrading to molybdenum-bearing ferritic or austenitic grades.
Weldability
S42035 has better weldability than high-carbon Type 420. The low carbon content and titanium addition reduce the risk of intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone. Matching or 400-series / appropriate stainless filler metals are selected according to the design.
Preheating and post-weld heat treatment requirements depend on thickness and joint design. SHH STEEL recommends proper welding procedures and post-weld cleaning. If the part must be hardened after fabrication, Type 420 (S42000) should be specified instead.
Heat Treatment
UNS S42035 plate is normally supplied in the annealed condition by SHH STEEL.
Annealing is used to restore ductility after cold working and to meet ASTM A240 mechanical limits. Because carbon is limited to 0.08%, this grade is not intended as a quench-and-temper cutlery steel. SHH STEEL controls heat treatment to ensure consistent hardness, strength and corrosion performance.
Surface Finishes
| Finish | Description | Typical Use / Keywords |
|---|---|---|
