What is ASME SA240 304L Stainless Steel Plate?

As a professional stainless steel plate supplier and China Mill-Direct Supply / Mill Direct Exporter, SHH STEEL is pleased to present ASME SA240 304L Stainless Steel Plate, also known as SA240 Type 304L.

ASME SA240 Type 304L is the low-carbon version of the classic 18-8 austenitic stainless steel. With a maximum carbon content of 0.030%, this grade provides significantly improved resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding compared with standard SA240 Type 304. It retains the excellent corrosion resistance, formability, toughness and fabricability that have made 304 the most widely used stainless steel in the world, while offering superior performance in welded constructions.

SHH STEEL supplies ASME SA240 304L as true Mill Direct Supply, sourcing directly from major Chinese stainless steel mills. This allows us to offer competitive mill pricing, consistent quality, shorter lead times and complete traceability. We provide thicknesses from 0.4 mm to 100 mm (thicker plates available on request), widths up to 2000–3000 mm, and lengths up to 12000 mm or custom cut-to-length. Both hot-rolled and cold-rolled conditions are available, together with a full range of surface finishes.

ASME SA240 304L is the preferred choice for pressure vessels, welded tanks, chemical equipment, food processing machinery and any application where the material will undergo significant welding and must maintain corrosion resistance in the as-welded condition.

Chemical Composition

Chemical composition of ASME SA240 Type 304L (Heat Analysis):

ElementContent (%)
Carbon (C)≤ 0.030
Silicon (Si)≤ 0.75
Manganese (Mn)≤ 2.00
Phosphorus (P)≤ 0.045
Sulfur (S)≤ 0.030
Chromium (Cr)18.00 – 20.00
Nickel (Ni)8.00 – 12.00
Nitrogen (N)≤ 0.10
Iron (Fe)Balance

The ultra-low carbon content is the defining feature of SA240 Type 304L. By keeping carbon at or below 0.030%, the formation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries during welding or exposure to the sensitization temperature range is greatly minimized. This results in excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion in the as-welded condition without the need for post-weld annealing in most cases.

Mechanical Properties

Mechanical properties of ASME SA240 Type 304L in the annealed condition:

PropertyValue
Tensile Strength≥ 485 MPa (70 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2%)≥ 170 MPa (25 ksi)
Elongation (in 50 mm)≥ 40%
Hardness≤ 201 HB / ≤ 92 HRB
Impact ToughnessExcellent down to cryogenic temperatures

Although the minimum tensile and yield strength values are slightly lower than those of standard Type 304, ASME SA240 304L still offers outstanding ductility, toughness and formability. The grade retains excellent impact properties at cryogenic temperatures and is widely used in low-temperature service.

Density: 7.93 g/cm³ Magnetic: Non-magnetic in the annealed condition (may become slightly magnetic after heavy cold working)

Material Comparison

Understanding the differences between related grades helps in correct material selection:

GradeCarbon ContentKey AdvantageTypical Recommendation
SA240 Type 304≤ 0.08%Higher strength, general purposeNon-welded or lightly welded applications
SA240 Type 304L≤ 0.030%Superior intergranular corrosion resistanceHeavy welded structures, as-welded service
SA240 Type 316L≤ 0.030% + MoBetter pitting resistanceChloride-containing environments
SA240 Type 321Ti-stabilizedHigh-temperature stabilityContinuous high-temperature service
SA240 Type 347Nb-stabilizedHigh-temperature stabilityHigh-temperature welded equipment

In most welded pressure vessel and process equipment applications, ASME SA240 304L is preferred over standard 304 because it eliminates the need for post-weld solution annealing while maintaining excellent corrosion performance. When the environment contains significant chlorides or requires higher pitting resistance, upgrading to astm a240 type 316l stainless steel sheet plate is recommended. For high-temperature service, stabilized grades such as astm a240 type 321 stainless steel sheet plate or astm a240 type 347 stainless steel sheet plate are often selected.

Japanese equivalent grades frequently requested alongside ASME SA240 304L include jis g4305 sus304l steel plate and jis g4305 sus304 steel plate.

Corrosion Resistance

ASME SA240 304L provides excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of atmospheric, aqueous and chemical environments. Its primary advantage over standard 304 is the markedly improved resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding or after heating in the temperature range of approximately 450–850°C.

It performs well in:

  • Food processing and sanitary environments
  • Oxidizing acids (e.g., nitric acid)
  • Organic compounds and mild chemical solutions
  • Fresh water and many industrial atmospheres

For environments containing significant chlorides or requiring higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, molybdenum-bearing grades such as 316L or higher alloys should be considered.

Weldability

ASME SA240 304L offers outstanding weldability by all conventional welding methods. Because of its low carbon content, it can be used in the as-welded condition in most corrosive environments without the risk of intergranular attack.

Recommended filler metals include E308L / ER308L. The grade can be readily welded to other austenitic stainless steels and to carbon steels using appropriate procedures. Post-weld heat treatment is generally unnecessary for corrosion resistance purposes.

Heat Treatment

ASME SA240 304L is supplied in the solution-annealed condition. The typical annealing temperature range is 1010–1120°C followed by rapid cooling. This treatment restores maximum corrosion resistance and ductility.
