AISI 314 Stainless Steel Plate | 314 China steel mill-Direct Supply
What is AISI 314 Stainless Steel Plate?
As a professional China steel mill-Direct Supply and stainless steel plate supplier, SHH STEEL is pleased to present AISI 314 Stainless Steel Plate.
AISI 314 (UNS S31400) is a heat-resisting austenitic stainless steel based on the high-chromium, high-nickel 25Cr-20Ni composition, with intentional high silicon addition (typically 1.50–3.00%). The elevated silicon content significantly enhances resistance to oxidation and improves performance in carburizing atmospheres compared with standard 310 grades. This makes AISI 314 particularly suitable for severe high-temperature service in industrial furnaces, heat-treatment equipment, radiant tubes, kiln components and petrochemical process equipment.
The grade is non-magnetic in the annealed condition and offers good high-temperature strength. It is widely used where both excellent oxidation resistance and better resistance to carburization are required.
SHH STEEL supplies AISI 314 as true China steel mill-Direct Supply, sourcing directly from major Chinese stainless steel mills. This model delivers competitive mill pricing, consistent quality, complete heat traceability and reliable delivery. SHH STEEL offers AISI 314 in plate and sheet form across a practical range of thicknesses and surface finishes suitable for elevated-temperature service.
AISI 314 is frequently compared with a240 310s, a240 310h, a240 309s, a240 304 and a240 321 when selecting materials for high-temperature applications. SHH STEEL provides technical support to help customers choose the most appropriate grade.

Chemical Composition
Typical Chemical Composition of AISI 314 (UNS S31400):
| Element | Content (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.25 |
| Silicon (Si) | 1.50 – 3.00 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 2.00 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.045 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.030 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 23.00 – 26.00 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 19.00 – 22.00 |
| Nitrogen (N) | ≤ 0.10 |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance |
The high silicon content (1.50–3.00%) is the key differentiating feature of AISI 314 compared with standard 310 grades. Silicon significantly improves the formation and adherence of the protective oxide scale, enhancing resistance to oxidation and providing better performance in carburizing environments. Combined with high chromium and nickel, the grade delivers outstanding high-temperature capability. SHH STEEL carefully controls the silicon content to ensure consistent performance.
Mechanical Properties
Annealed Condition (typical values)
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | ≥ 515 MPa (75 ksi) |
| Yield Strength (0.2%) | ≥ 205 MPa (30 ksi) |
| Elongation (in 50 mm) | ≥ 40% |
| Hardness | ≤ 217 HB |
At elevated temperatures, AISI 314 retains useful strength and outstanding oxidation resistance. The high silicon content further supports scale integrity under severe thermal cycling and carburizing conditions. For applications requiring higher creep strength, related grades such as a240 310h may be considered. SHH STEEL supplies material with consistent high-temperature properties.
Physical Properties Density is approximately 7.90 g/cm³. The grade is non-magnetic in the annealed condition. Melting range is approximately 1400–1450°C.
Material Comparison
| Grade | Key Feature | Cr (%) | Ni (%) | Si (%) | Oxidation + Carburization | Typical Preference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AISI 310S | Low carbon 25Cr-20Ni | 24–26 | 19–22 | ≤ 1.50 | Excellent oxidation | Welded severe high-temp service |
| AISI 310H | High carbon 25Cr-20Ni | 24–26 | 19–22 | ≤ 1.50 | Excellent oxidation | High-temp strength under load |
| AISI 314 | High silicon 25Cr-20Ni | 23–26 | 19–22 | 1.50–3.00 | Excellent oxidation + better carburization | Severe oxidizing / carburizing service |
| AISI 309S | 23Cr-13Ni | 22–24 | 12–15 | ≤ 1.00 | Very Good | High-temperature oxidizing service |
| AISI 304 | Standard 18-8 | 18–20 | 8–10.5 | ≤ 1.00 | Good | General purpose |
| AISI 321 | Ti-stabilized | 17–19 | 9–12 | ≤ 1.00 | Good | Stabilized high-temp welded service |
AISI 314 is selected when improved resistance to both oxidation and carburization is required at high temperatures. Compared with a240 310s and a240 310h, the higher silicon content provides better scale stability and carburization resistance. For standard high-temperature oxidizing service without severe carburization, SHH STEEL also supplies a240 310s.
Corrosion Resistance
AISI 314 provides outstanding resistance to oxidation and scaling in air and oxidizing atmospheres at elevated temperatures. The high silicon content further improves the protective oxide layer, enhancing performance under thermal cycling and in environments with carburizing potential.
It also offers good resistance to atmospheric corrosion at room temperature. In highly reducing or sulfur-rich atmospheres, performance may still be limited. For aqueous chloride environments, SHH STEEL recommends a240 316l or a240 2205.
Weldability
AISI 314 can be welded by standard fusion welding methods. Matching or high-silicon 310/314-type filler metals are preferred. Due to the higher silicon and carbon levels, welding procedures should be carefully controlled, and post-weld solution annealing may be recommended for critical service.
When maximum as-welded corrosion resistance is required, SHH STEEL often recommends evaluating a240 310s as an alternative base material.
Heat Treatment
AISI 314 is normally supplied in the solution-annealed condition by SHH STEEL.
Recommended solution annealing temperature range is 1040–1150°C, followed by rapid cooling. Proper annealing optimizes both room-temperature ductility and high-temperature oxidation/carburization resistance. SHH STEEL controls heat treatment to ensure consistent quality for elevated-temperature applications.
Surface Finishes
| Finish | Description | Typical Use / Keywords |
|---|---|---|
| No.1 | Hot-rolled, annealed and pickled | AISI 314 No.1 – most common for industrial high-temp plate |
| 2B | Cold-rolled, annealed, pickled, skin-passed | AISI 314 2B – thinner plates |
| Special | Ground or custom finishes | AISI 314 Special – on request |
SHH STEEL regularly supplies AISI 314 in No.1 finish, which is the preferred condition for most high-temperature plate applications.
Tolerances
Dimensional tolerances for AISI 314 Stainless Steel Plate supplied by SHH STEEL generally conform to ASTM A480 practices.
Typical available size range is thickness 1 mm – 80 mm, width up to 2000–3000 mm, and length up to 12000 mm or cut-to-length. SHH STEEL provides precise dimensional control and can support tighter tolerances when required.
