AISI 317L is the preferred grade whenever both superior pitting resistance and excellent as-welded performance are required in aggressive chloride environments. Corrosion Resistance
AISI 317L offers excellent resistance to atmospheric corrosion, fresh water, food products and many chemical environments. The higher molybdenum content provides superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing media compared with 316L, while the low carbon content ensures excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding.
It performs well in chemical processing, pulp and paper, flue gas desulfurization, pharmaceutical and marine applications where 316L is marginal or insufficient. In extremely aggressive chloride environments or at elevated temperatures, stress corrosion cracking or pitting can still occur. For such conditions, SHH STEEL recommends a240 904l or a240 2205.
Weldability
AISI 317L has excellent weldability using standard fusion and resistance welding methods. Matching or 317L filler metals are commonly used. Because of the very low carbon content, the risk of intergranular corrosion in the as-welded condition is minimal, and post-weld annealing is generally not required.

Heat Treatment
AISI 317L is normally supplied in the solution-annealed condition by SHH STEEL.
