What is ASME SA240 436 Stainless Steel Plate?

As a professional stainless steel plate supplier and China Mill-Direct Supply / Mill Direct Exporter, SHH STEEL is pleased to present ASME SA240 436 Stainless Steel Plate, also known as SA240 Type 436.

ASME SA240 Type 436 is a ferritic stainless steel that combines the benefits of molybdenum addition with niobium (columbium) stabilization. Based on a 16–18% chromium composition, it contains molybdenum to improve pitting and crevice corrosion resistance (similar to Type 434) and niobium to stabilize carbon and nitrogen, providing excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding. This dual improvement makes Type 436 superior to both standard Type 430 and Type 434 in welded applications exposed to mildly corrosive or chloride-containing environments.

Type 436 is magnetic and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. It offers good formability and oxidation resistance while remaining more economical than austenitic grades. It is commonly used in automotive exhaust systems, exterior trim, heat exchangers, and other components requiring a balance of improved corrosion resistance, weldability, and cost-effectiveness.

SHH STEEL supplies ASME SA240 436 as true Mill Direct Supply, sourcing directly from major Chinese stainless steel mills. This model delivers competitive mill pricing, consistent quality, full heat traceability and shorter lead times. We offer a practical dimensional range and a selection of surface finishes to meet both industrial and aesthetic requirements.

Chemical Composition

Heat Analysis (Ladle Analysis) according to ASME SA240 Type 436:

ElementContent (%)
Carbon (C)≤ 0.12
Silicon (Si)≤ 1.00
Manganese (Mn)≤ 1.00
Phosphorus (P)≤ 0.040
Sulfur (S)≤ 0.030
Chromium (Cr)16.00 – 18.00
Molybdenum (Mo)0.75 – 1.25
Nickel (Ni)≤ 0.60
Niobium (Nb)≥ 5 × C% and ≤ 0.80
Iron (Fe)Balance

Product Analysis (typical permissible variations):

ElementContent (%)
Carbon (C)≤ 0.12
Silicon (Si)≤ 1.00
Manganese (Mn)≤ 1.00
Phosphorus (P)≤ 0.040
Sulfur (S)≤ 0.030
Chromium (Cr)15.90 – 18.10
Molybdenum (Mo)0.75 – 1.25
Nickel (Ni)≤ 0.60
Niobium (Nb)≥ 5 × C% and ≤ 0.80

The combination of molybdenum (for improved pitting resistance) and niobium stabilization (for resistance to intergranular corrosion) is the defining feature of Type 436. This makes it a higher-performance ferritic grade compared with both 430 and 434.

ASME SA240 436 is selected when both improved pitting resistance (from molybdenum) and good resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding (from niobium stabilization) are required. It offers a performance upgrade over astm a240 type 430 stainless steel sheet plate and astm a240 type 434 stainless steel sheet plate. For applications focused mainly on weldability and exhaust systems, astm a240 type 439 stainless steel sheet plate is a strong alternative. For maximum corrosion resistance, austenitic grades such as astm a240 type 304 stainless steel sheet plate are preferred.

Corrosion Resistance

ASME SA240 Type 436 provides good resistance to atmospheric corrosion, fresh water, and many mild chemical environments. The molybdenum addition significantly improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing atmospheres compared with Type 430. The niobium stabilization ensures excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion after welding.

It also offers very good oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. While superior to standard 430 and 434 in many welded or mildly chloride-exposed applications, it is still not suitable for severe seawater or highly aggressive chloride service, where austenitic or duplex grades should be used.

Weldability

ASME SA240 Type 436 has good weldability for a ferritic stainless steel, thanks to niobium stabilization. The risk of intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone is greatly reduced compared with unstabilized grades.

Low heat input and proper joint design are recommended to control grain growth. Matching or suitable ferritic/austenitic filler metals can be used. Overall, Type 436 is one of the more weldable molybdenum-bearing ferritic grades.

Heat Treatment

Type 436 is a ferritic stainless steel and cannot be hardened by quenching and tempering.

Annealing

  • Temperature: typically 760 – 850°C
  • Cooling: Air cool or furnace cool

Annealing is performed to relieve stresses after cold working or welding, restore ductility, and optimize corrosion resistance. Excessive time at high temperature should be avoided to limit grain growth.
