ASME SA240 430 Stainless Steel Plate | SA240 Type 430
What is ASME SA240 430 Stainless Steel Plate?
As a professional stainless steel plate supplier and China Mill-Direct Supply / Mill Direct Exporter, SHH STEEL is pleased to present ASME SA240 430 Stainless Steel Plate, also known as SA240 Type 430.
ASME SA240 Type 430 is the most widely used ferritic stainless steel. Containing 16–18% chromium, it provides good resistance to atmospheric corrosion, fresh water, nitric acid and many organic media, together with excellent resistance to oxidation at elevated temperatures. Unlike martensitic grades, Type 430 cannot be hardened by heat treatment; its mechanical properties are achieved in the annealed condition, with additional strength possible through cold working.
Type 430 is magnetic and offers good formability, ductility and surface finish capability. It is significantly more economical than austenitic grades such as 304 while delivering adequate corrosion performance for a wide range of mildly to moderately corrosive environments. Typical applications include automotive trim and exhaust components, kitchen equipment, appliances, architectural panels, and various industrial parts.
SHH STEEL supplies ASME SA240 430 as true Mill Direct Supply, sourcing directly from major Chinese stainless steel mills. This model delivers competitive mill pricing, consistent quality, full heat traceability and shorter lead times. We offer a practical dimensional range and a full selection of surface finishes, including popular 2B and BA finishes for aesthetic applications.

Chemical Composition
Heat Analysis (Ladle Analysis) according to ASME SA240 Type 430:
| Element | Content (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.12 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 1.00 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 1.00 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.040 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.030 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 16.00 – 18.00 |
| Nickel (Ni) | ≤ 0.75 |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance |
Product Analysis (typical permissible variations):
| Element | Content (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.12 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 1.00 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 1.00 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.040 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.030 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 15.90 – 18.10 |
| Nickel (Ni) | ≤ 0.75 |
The 16–18% chromium content is the key factor providing Type 430 with its good corrosion resistance and excellent oxidation resistance, while the low nickel content keeps the structure fully ferritic and the cost competitive.

Material Comparison
| Grade | Structure | Cr Content | Key Advantage | Typical Preference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SA240 Type 410 | Martensitic | 11.5–13.5% | Heat-treatable high strength | Strength + moderate corrosion |
| SA240 Type 429 | Ferritic | 14–16% | Better oxidation resistance than 410 | Exhaust & furnace applications |
| SA240 Type 430 | Ferritic | 16–18% | Best balance of corrosion resistance, formability & cost among standard ferritics | Automotive, appliances, architecture |
| SA240 Type 304 | Austenitic | 18–20% | Excellent corrosion resistance & formability | General corrosive service |
| SA240 Type 439 | Ferritic | 17–19% + Ti | Improved weldability & corrosion resistance | Automotive exhaust, higher performance ferritic |
ASME SA240 430 is the standard ferritic grade chosen for the majority of applications requiring good corrosion resistance at a lower cost than 304. When improved weldability or higher corrosion resistance in exhaust systems is needed, stabilized grades such as 439 are often preferred. For heat-treatable strength, astm a240 type 410 stainless steel sheet plate or 410S remains the option. For superior corrosion resistance, astm a240 type 304 stainless steel sheet plate is the common upgrade.
Corrosion Resistance
ASME SA240 Type 430 offers good resistance to atmospheric corrosion, fresh water, nitric acid and many organic compounds. It performs well in indoor and mildly corrosive outdoor environments and has excellent resistance to oxidation and scaling at elevated temperatures (up to approximately 800–850°C in continuous service).
It is not recommended for severe chloride environments (seawater, de-icing salts in high concentrations) or strong reducing acids, where austenitic or duplex grades should be selected. In the annealed condition with a clean surface, Type 430 provides reliable performance for a wide range of consumer and industrial applications.
Weldability
ASME SA240 Type 430 has moderate weldability. As a ferritic grade, it is susceptible to grain growth in the heat-affected zone, which can reduce toughness. Low heat input, proper joint design and, in some cases, post-weld annealing are recommended for critical applications.
Matching 430 filler metals or austenitic fillers (308L/309L) are commonly used depending on the application. Preheating is sometimes applied for thicker sections. Overall, weldability is better than higher-carbon martensitic grades but requires more care than austenitic 304/316.
Heat Treatment
Type 430 is a ferritic stainless steel and cannot be hardened by quenching and tempering.
Annealing
- Temperature: typically 760 – 850°C
- Cooling: Air cool or furnace cool
Annealing is performed to relieve stresses after cold working, restore ductility, and optimize corrosion resistance. Prolonged exposure at very high temperatures should be avoided to minimize excessive grain growth.
