What is AISI 442 Stainless Steel?

As a professional China steel mill-Direct Supply and stainless steel plate supplier, SHH STEEL is pleased to present AISI 442 Stainless Steel Plate.

AISI 442 is widely known and searched under many different names and designations, including AISI 442, ASTM A240 Type 442, ASME SA240 Type 442, UNS S44200, 442 stainless steel, 442 stainless steel plate and high-chromium ferritic 442. All these names refer to the same 18–23% chromium ferritic stainless steel.

AISI 442 sits between standard A240 430 and the still-higher-chromium Type 446. The extra chromium forms a more stable oxide scale, so AISI 442 resists oxidation and scaling better than 430 in furnace and high-temperature air service. The grade remains magnetic, non-hardenable by conventional quench and temper, and is normally supplied annealed.

Typical uses include furnace parts, heat-treatment fixtures, annealing boxes, kiln components and other fabrications exposed to oxidizing atmospheres at elevated temperature. AISI 442 is not intended to replace molybdenum-bearing grades in wet chloride service.

SHH STEEL supplies AISI 442 as true China steel mill-Direct Supply, sourcing directly from major Chinese stainless steel mills. This model delivers competitive mill pricing, consistent quality, complete heat traceability and reliable delivery.

AISI 442 is frequently compared with A240 430, A240 439, A240 441, A240 444, A240 409 and a240 310s. SHH STEEL provides technical support to help customers choose the most appropriate heat-resisting grade.

Chemical Composition

Typical Chemical Composition of AISI 442 (UNS S44200):

ElementContent (%)
Carbon (C)≤ 0.20
Silicon (Si)≤ 1.00
Manganese (Mn)≤ 1.00
Phosphorus (P)≤ 0.040
Sulfur (S)≤ 0.030
Chromium (Cr)18.00 – 23.00
Nickel (Ni)≤ 0.60
Iron (Fe)Balance

The defining feature of AISI 442 is the high chromium range (18–23%). Extra chromium improves scaling resistance in oxidizing furnace atmospheres compared with 16–18% Cr grades such as 430. Carbon is higher than in stabilized ferritics such as 439, so welding procedure control is important. SHH STEEL carefully controls chromium to keep high-temperature oxidation performance consistent.

Mechanical Properties

Annealed Condition (typical values)

PropertyValue
Tensile Strength≥ 450 MPa
Yield Strength (0.2%)≥ 205 MPa
Elongation (in 50 mm)≥ 20%
Hardness≤ 217 HBW

AISI 442 is supplied annealed, with moderate strength and useful ductility for fabrication. It is magnetic and cannot be hardened by conventional quench and temper. SHH STEEL supplies AISI 442 with consistent annealed mechanical properties.

Physical Properties
Density is approximately 7.65–7.75 g/cm³. Melting range is approximately 1425–1510°C. Useful oxidation resistance in air is typically in the 800–950°C range, depending on cycle conditions.

AISI 310SS3100824–26AusteniticExcellentSevere high-temperature oxidation

AISI 442 is selected when oxidation resistance must be better than A240 430 but a ferritic, lower-nickel material is preferred. For welded exhaust systems, SHH STEEL often recommends A240 439 or A240 441. For the most severe oxidizing service, compare with a240 310s.

Corrosion Resistance

AISI 442 offers good resistance to high-temperature oxidation and scaling because of its high chromium content. At room temperature it also resists mild atmospheres and many oxidizing conditions better than 12–16% Cr ferritics.

It is not a wet-chloride grade. In seawater, process chlorides or strong reducing acids, pitting or rust staining can occur. For those environments SHH STEEL recommends a240 316l or A240 444.

Weldability

AISI 442 can be welded by standard fusion methods, but heat input must be controlled. Higher carbon and high chromium increase the risk of grain growth and reduced toughness in the heat-affected zone.

Matching high-chromium ferritic or appropriate 430/446-type fillers are selected according to the design. For easier welded ferritic fabrications, SHH STEEL often recommends titanium-stabilized A240 439. Proper welding procedures and post-weld cleaning are required.

Heat Treatment

AISI 442 is normally supplied in the annealed condition by SHH STEEL.

Annealing restores ductility after hot working or cold forming and prepares the plate for fabrication. The grade cannot be hardened by conventional quench and temper. SHH STEEL controls heat treatment so AISI 442 remains formable and suitable for high-temperature service.

Tolerances

Dimensional tolerances for AISI 442 Stainless Steel Plate supplied by SHH STEEL generally conform to ASTM A480 practices.

Typical available size range is thickness 1 mm – 50 mm, width up to 1500–2000 mm, and length up to 6000–12000 mm or cut-to-length. SHH STEEL provides precise dimensional control and can support tighter tolerances when required.

FAQ

What are the other common names for AISI 442?
AISI 442 is also known as ASTM A240 Type 442, UNS S44200 and high-chromium ferritic 442. SHH STEEL can certify the required designation.
What is the difference between AISI 442 and AISI 430?
AISI 442 has higher chromium (18–23% vs 16–18%), so it resists oxidation and scaling better at elevated temperature. SHH STEEL recommends 442 for furnace service and 430 for appliances and indoor fabrication.
What is the difference between AISI 442 and AISI 439?
39 is titanium-stabilized and easier to weld. 442 relies on higher chromium for oxidation resistance. SHH STEEL recommends 439 for exhaust systems and 442 for furnace oxidation service.
Is AISI 442 magnetic?
Yes. AISI 442 is ferritic and remains magnetic in the annealed condition.
What is the density of AISI 442?
Approximately 7.65–7.75 g/cm³. SHH STEEL provides mill certificates confirming chemistry and mechanical properties.
Can AISI 442 replace 310S?
In moderate oxidizing service it can be a lower-nickel alternative. For the most severe high-temperature oxidation, SHH STEEL still recommends 310S.
Does SHH STEEL supply dual-certified ASTM A240 Type 442 / AISI 442 material?
es, SHH STEEL commonly supplies dual-certified material upon request.

Conclusion

AISI 442 Stainless Steel Plate is a high-chromium ferritic grade designed for oxidation-resistant service at elevated temperature. With 18–23% chromium, it offers a practical upgrade from 430 for furnace parts, heat-treatment fixtures and other fabrications exposed to oxidizing atmospheres.
