AISI 405 Stainless Steel Plate | A240 Type 405 China mill-Direct Supply
What is A240 Type 405 | UNS S40500 | AISI 405 Stainless Steel Plate?
As a professional China steel mill-Direct Supply and stainless steel plate supplier, SHH STEEL is pleased to present A240 Type 405 | UNS S40500 | 405 Stainless Steel Plate.
This grade is widely known and searched under many different names and designations, including AISI 405, ASTM A240 Type 405, ASME SA240 Type 405, UNS S40500, 405 stainless steel, 405 stainless steel plate, SUS405, 1.4002, X6CrAl13, 0Cr13Al and 06Cr13Al. All these names refer to the same aluminum-bearing 12% chromium ferritic stainless steel.
AISI 405 / A240 Type 405 contains approximately 11.5–14.5% chromium and 0.10–0.30% aluminum, with carbon limited to 0.08%. Aluminum is added specifically to prevent air hardening during cooling after welding or high-temperature exposure. This makes 405 much more suitable for welded constructions than standard Type 410, which can harden in the heat-affected zone.
The grade is magnetic, cannot be hardened by conventional heat treatment, and offers moderate corrosion resistance similar to other 12% Cr stainless steels. Typical uses include annealing boxes, quenching racks, steam nozzles, petroleum-refining equipment and welded pressure parts that must remain relatively soft after fabrication.
SHH STEEL supplies A240 Type 405 / UNS S40500 as true China steel mill-Direct Supply, sourcing directly from major Chinese stainless steel mills. This model delivers competitive mill pricing, consistent quality, complete heat traceability and reliable delivery.
A240 Type 405 is frequently compared with A240 410, A240 410S, A240 430, A240 409, A240 429 and A240 439. SHH STEEL provides technical support to help customers choose the most appropriate 400-series grade.

Chemical Composition
Typical Chemical Composition of A240 Type 405 (UNS S40500):
| Element | Content (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.08 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 1.00 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 1.00 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.040 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.030 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 11.50 – 14.50 |
| Nickel (Ni) | ≤ 0.60 |
| Aluminum (Al) | 0.10 – 0.30 |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance |
The defining feature of AISI 405 is the aluminum addition (0.10–0.30%) in a 12% chromium ferritic base. Aluminum restricts hardenability, so the heat-affected zone stays relatively soft after welding. Low carbon further supports weldability. SHH STEEL carefully controls aluminum and carbon to keep 405 from behaving like hardenable Type 410.
Mechanical Properties
Annealed Condition (typical ASTM A240 values)
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | ≥ 415 MPa (60 ksi) |
| Yield Strength (0.2%) | ≥ 170 MPa (25 ksi) |
| Elongation (in 50 mm) | ≥ 20% |
| Hardness | ≤ 217 HBW |
A240 Type 405 is supplied annealed, with moderate strength and good ductility for forming and welding. It is magnetic. Unlike Type 410, it is not intended for quench-and-temper hardening. SHH STEEL supplies material meeting A240 mechanical limits.
Physical Properties
Density is approximately 7.75 g/cm³. Melting range is approximately 1480–1530°C.
Material Comparison
| Grade | UNS | Special Addition | Hardenable | Welded HAZ Behavior | Typical Preference |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Type 410 | S41000 | — | Yes | Can harden | General martensitic / wear service |
| Type 410S | S41008 | Low carbon | Limited | Softer than 410 | Welded 12% Cr constructions |
| Type 405 | S40500 | Aluminum | No | Resists air hardening | Welded 12% Cr + thermal cycling |
| Type 430 | S43000 | Higher Cr | No | Ferritic | General ferritic / decorative |
| Type 409 | S40900 | Titanium | No | Stabilized ferritic | Automotive exhaust |
| Type 439 | S43035 | Ti + higher Cr | No | Stabilized ferritic | Improved ferritic exhaust / welded |
A240 Type 405 is selected when a 12% Cr plate must be welded without the air-hardening problem of A240 410. Compared with A240 410S, 405 uses aluminum rather than only low carbon to control hardenability. For higher chromium and better atmospheric corrosion resistance, SHH STEEL recommends A240 430 or A240 439.
Corrosion Resistance
AISI 405 offers moderate corrosion resistance similar to other 12% chromium stainless steels. It performs well in mild atmospheres, steam, fresh water and many refining or heat-treatment environments. Aluminum improves scaling behavior during high-temperature exposure and helps keep the welded structure from hardening.
It is not a substitute for austenitic grades such as a240 304 or a240 316l in chloride or acid service. For better atmospheric and chloride resistance within the 400 series, compare with A240 430 or A240 444.
Weldability
A240 Type 405 has good weldability for a 12% Cr grade because aluminum and low carbon resist air hardening. Matching 405 or appropriate 410/430-type filler metals are commonly used.
Preheat and post-weld heat treatment requirements depend on thickness and restraint. Compared with Type 410, 405 greatly reduces the risk of a hard, brittle heat-affected zone. SHH STEEL recommends proper welding procedures and post-weld cleaning.
Heat Treatment
A240 Type 405 is normally supplied in the annealed condition by SHH STEEL.
Annealing softens the plate after hot working or cold forming and restores ductility. The grade is not hardened by quench and temper. SHH STEEL controls heat treatment to meet A240 mechanical properties and to keep the aluminum addition effective.
Surface Finishes
| Finish | Description | Typical Use / Keywords |
