1.4563 stainless steel plate: product overview and SHH STEEL sourcing

EN 10088-2 X1NiCrMoCu31-27-4 1.4563 stainless steel plate is a high-alloy austenitic flat product supplied to EN 10088-2, the European standard for stainless steel sheet, plate and strip for general purposes. X1NiCrMoCu31-27-4 contains up to 0.020 % carbon, 26.0 – 28.0 % chromium, 30.0 – 32.0 % nickel, 3.0 – 4.0 % molybdenum, 0.70 – 1.50 % copper and up to 0.10 % nitrogen. It is the composition commonly called Alloy 28 (UNS N08028). EN 10088-2 places 1.4563 among its special grades, defined as grades for special use and/or with limited availability, and Table 7 lists it as hot rolled plate (P) up to 75 mm only, solution annealed. Table 7 rates it resistant to intergranular corrosion both as delivered and after sensitization.

SHH STEEL works as a steel sourcing partner with long-term relationships with Chinese stainless mills that roll high-alloy austenitic hot rolled plate. For large tonnages, the buyer can contract directly with a suitable mill, with SHH STEEL assisting for a modest service fee and handling follow-up and documents. For small orders we consolidate demand, so that 1 – 5 t lots are placed against genuine mill production instead of stock of unknown origin. Each shipment can be released after third-party inspection by TUV, ABS, BV, DNV, CCS or an agency the buyer nominates, and payment by TT or LC is accepted. The rest of this page covers the technical side of EN 10088-2 1.4563 and the steps we take so that the sheet that arrives is the sheet that was ordered.

The table below lists the concerns buyers raise most often when sourcing EN 10088-2 X1NiCrMoCu31-27-4 sheet and plate from China, and how SHH STEEL deals with each of them.

Buyer ConcernSHH STEEL Solution
Fake material or certificates1.4563 is sometimes replaced by 1.4539 or other lower-nickel material; chromium, nickel, molybdenum and copper are checked by XRF or OES. Partner laboratories handle chemical analysis, tensile, impact and corrosion testing, and 3.2 certificates with third-party witness are available.
Unsafe depositPayment by TT, LC or a TT + LC combination. For large acid plant or oil and gas projects the buyer can contract directly with the mill, with SHH STEEL assisting for a small service fee.
Quantity below mill minimumAs a special grade, 1.4563 plate is usually needed in small lots. SHH STEEL consolidates orders so 1 – 5 t lots can join a mill rolling campaign.
Delivery delaysA dedicated person follows up the delivery schedule with the mill and reports progress at melting, rolling, annealing, pickling, testing and packing.
Fabrication needsOur workshop provides plasma and waterjet cutting, sawing and bending of plate, with protective film on request.

EN 10088-2 vs EN 10028-7 and ASTM B709: standard selection for X1NiCrMoCu31-27-4 plate

1.4563 corresponds to UNS N08028. Because of its nickel content, N08028 plate is covered by ASTM B709 (iron-nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy plate, sheet and strip) rather than by ASTM A240. The composition is sold under trade names, including Alleima’s Sanicro 28; Sanicro is an Alleima trademark. SHH STEEL orders and certifies by EN steel number and UNS number; a specific producer’s branded product has to be named and agreed in the order. For pressure equipment the grade is ordered to EN 10028-7; see EN 10028-7 1.4563 pressure vessel plate.

ItemEN 10088-2 1.4563ASTM B709-22 N08028

P / S≤ 0.030 % / ≤ 0.010 %≤ 0.030 % / ≤ 0.030 %

EN 10088-2 is tighter on carbon, nickel, silicon, manganese and sulphur, so a 1.4563 heat normally meets N08028 chemistry if its copper is no higher than 1.40 %; dual certification therefore needs copper of 0.70 – 1.40 %. ASTM B709-22 requires a minimum yield strength of 214 MPa, a minimum tensile strength of 500 MPa and 40 % elongation, against 220 MPa, 500 – 700 MPa and 40 % in EN 10088-2, and recommends solution annealing at 1 080 °C minimum. SHH STEEL checks both sets of values when a buyer needs dual certification.

1.4563 is also listed in EN 10028-7:2016 for pressure purposes, as is 1.4539 (EN 10028-7 1.4539 pressure vessel plate). That standard may set its own test and property requirements, which we have not reproduced here.

1.4563 chemical composition: heat analysis and product analysis tolerances

The 1.4563 chemical composition below is the cast (heat) analysis from EN 10088-2:2014 Table 1. Values are percentages by mass; a single figure is a maximum.

CSiMnPSCrMoNiNCu
0.0200.702.000.0300.01026.0 – 28.03.0 – 4.030.0 – 32.00.100.70 – 1.50

The 1.4563 chemical composition is built on 26.0 – 28.0 % chromium and 30.0 – 32.0 % nickel, with molybdenum and copper for reducing acids. Phosphorus (0.030 %) and sulphur (0.010 %) limits are tighter than for the 300-series grades. SHH STEEL checks chromium, nickel, molybdenum and copper on every certificate as part of the 1.4563 chemical composition review.

Product analysis tolerances (EN 10088-2 Table 5)

A product analysis is a check made on the delivered sheet. It is not mandatory under EN 10088-2; it is carried out when agreed at the time of enquiry and order, and SHH STEEL can arrange it through a partner laboratory. The permissible tolerances on the cast limits are:

ElementCast limit, %Permissible tolerance, %Product analysis limit, %
C≤ 0.020+ 0.005≤ 0.025
Si≤ 0.70+ 0.05≤ 0.75
Mn≤ 2.00± 0.04≤ 2.04
P≤ 0.030+ 0.005≤ 0.035
S≤ 0.010+ 0.003≤ 0.013
Cr26.0 – 28.0± 0.2525.75 – 28.25
Mo3.0 – 4.0± 0.102.90 – 4.10
Ni30.0 – 32.0± 0.2029.80 – 32.20
N≤ 0.10+ 0.01≤ 0.11
Cu0.70 – 1.50+ 0.04 / ± 0.100.70 – 1.60

Where several product analyses are made on one cast, individual results may exceed the maximum or fall below the minimum, but not both for the same element. Copper uses + 0.04 % (plus only) at the 0.70 % minimum and ± 0.10 % at the 1.50 % maximum, because Table 5 changes band at 1.00 %. If a product analysis is required, it should be stated in the order together with the Table 5 tolerances.

1.4563 mechanical properties: solution annealed plate

The 1.4563 mechanical properties below are the room-temperature values from EN 10088-2:2014 Table 7 for austenitic steels in the solution annealed condition. Test pieces are transverse; the A80 elongation applies below 3 mm and the proportional elongation A from 3 mm.

Rp1.0 values are for guidance only. For bigger sizes than those listed, mechanical values are to be agreed at the time of enquiry and order.

EN 10088-2 lists 1.4563 as hot rolled plate only. Table 7 rates its resistance to intergranular corrosion (EN ISO 3651-2) as “yes” in both the delivery condition and the sensitized condition.

Cold worked condition (process route 2H)

EN 10088-2 Tables 19 and 20 list no cold worked (2H) strength levels for 1.4563, so the grade is ordered in the solution annealed condition (+AT). Where higher annealed strength is needed, the nitrogen-alloyed 1.4529 (300 MPa) is the usual comparison.

Minimum proof strength at elevated temperature (EN 10088-2 Table 12, +AT)

Rp1.0 min, MPa220205190185180175165155150145

EN 10088-2 Table 12 gives values for 1.4563 from 100 °C to 550 °C, for the solution annealed condition (+AT), a wider range than for 1.4529 (to 400 °C). They are minimum values for design and are not tested unless agreed.

Heat treatment of X1NiCrMoCu31-27-4: solution annealing

EN 10088-2 Table A.1 gives the following guideline temperatures for 1.4563:

OperationTemperature, °CCooling
Hot forming1 150 – 850Air
Solution annealing (+AT)1 070 – 1 150Water or air, sufficiently rapid to avoid intergranular corrosion

The footnotes to Table A.1 state that with a continuous furnace the upper part of the range is usually preferred or even exceeded, and that the lower end of the range should be aimed at when the heat treatment is part of further processing, because otherwise the mechanical properties may be affected. Solution annealing may be omitted if hot working and cooling achieve the required mechanical properties and resistance to intergranular corrosion.

The Euro Inox tables give the same 1 070 – 1 150 °C range with cooling in air or water, and ASTM B709 recommends a minimum of 1 080 °C with rapid cooling for N08028. A dual-certified plate should therefore be annealed at 1 080 °C or above. Plate is delivered as +AT.

Physical properties of 1.4563 austenitic plate

The values below are approximate reference figures for X1NiCrMoCu31-27-4 at room temperature, from the worldstainless “Tables of Technical Properties”, which follow EN 10088-1. They are suitable for design estimates and weight calculation; where a figure is critical, use EN 10088-1 itself.

PropertyApproximate value
Densityabout 8.0 g/cm³
Modulus of elasticity at 20 °Cabout 195 GPa
Mean thermal expansion, 20 – 200 °C16.1 × 10⁻⁶ /K

Specific heat at 20 °Cabout 450 J/(kg·K)
Electrical resistivity at 20 °C1.00 Ω·mm²/m
Magnetic behaviourEssentially non-magnetic when solution annealed; magnetism increases with cold work

The worldstainless table gives 1.4563 a density of 8.0 g/cm³, a modulus of 195 GPa, a thermal conductivity of 12 W/(m·K), a specific heat of 450 J/(kg·K) and an electrical resistivity of 1.00 Ω·mm²/m, the same thermal and electrical values as for 1.4539 and 1.4529. 1.4563 is not listed in the EN 10088-1 extract by Häuselmann that we use for magnetic behaviour, so the magnetic statement above is the general austenitic one.

Corrosion behaviour of X1NiCrMoCu31-27-4 1.4563

The Euro Inox fabrication tables list 1.4563 for heat exchangers in contact with sulphuric and phosphoric acid contaminated by chlorides and fluorides, and for pipes in the oil and gas industry, with good resistance to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. Alleima’s Sanicro 28 datasheet describes very high corrosion resistance in strong acids and very good resistance to stress corrosion cracking and intergranular corrosion. EN 10088-2 Table 7 rates its resistance to intergranular corrosion, tested to EN ISO 3651-2, as “yes” in the delivery condition and “yes” in the sensitized condition.

EnvironmentTypical behaviour
Phosphoric acid with chlorides and fluoridesListed application (Euro Inox)
Sulphuric acid with impuritiesListed application (Euro Inox)
Oil and gas pipesListed application (Euro Inox)
Pitting, crevice corrosion, SCCGood resistance (Euro Inox)
Intergranular corrosion, sensitizedResistant (Table 7: yes)

The lower-nickel, lower-chromium relative is EN 10088-2 1.4539 plate; the 6 % molybdenum grades EN 10088-2 1.4529 plate and EN 10088-2 1.4547 plate are compared when chloride pitting rather than acid attack is the main risk.

Corrosion resistance depends on the actual medium, its impurities and its temperature, so service experience or tests in the real medium should guide grade selection.

Weldability of 1.4563 austenitic plate: SHH STEEL workshop practice

1.4563 is weldable by the common arc and resistance processes; as a fully austenitic high-nickel grade, filler choice and heat input need attention.

  • The Euro Inox fabrication tables rate TIG/MIG, manual metal arc and resistance welding as suitable for 1.4563.
  • The filler materials listed are the nickel alloys 2.4621, 2.4653 and 2.4656, not a matching stainless filler.
  • EN 10088-2 Table 7 rates 1.4563 “yes” for intergranular corrosion after sensitization.
  • EN 10088-2 does not specify welding procedures; these are published guidelines and general practice.

These points reflect industry practice for high-alloy austenitic stainless steels rather than requirements of EN 10088-2, which does not specify welding procedures. In the SHH STEEL workshop, plate blanks are cut with clean, burr-free edges, ready for the fabricator’s own joint preparation.

Forming, cold working and cutting of X1NiCrMoCu31-27-4 in the SHH STEEL workshop

Annealed 1.4563 plate forms with standard austenitic practice; with a proof strength of 220 MPa and 40 % elongation, it behaves much like 1.4539 of the same thickness.

Plate is cut by plasma or waterjet, or sawn. Machining needs sharp tools, rigid set-ups and positive feeds to avoid work hardening at the cut.

We run our own workshop next to the warehouse, so 1.4563 hot rolled plate and X1NiCrMoCu31-27-4 plate blanks can be delivered cut to size or bent. Details are on our steel cutting services and bending and forming services pages.

1.4563 plate sizes, thickness limits and tolerances

EN 10088-2 Table 7 lists 1.4563 only as hot rolled plate (P) up to 75 mm.

Product formThickness range covered by EN 10088-2Typical width supplied (by mill)Tolerance standard
P – hot rolled (quarto) plateup to 75 mm in Table 7; thicker plate by agreementconfirmed at enquiryEN ISO 18286
C / H – cold rolled or hot rolled stripnot listed in Table 7 for this gradeby agreement onlyEN ISO 9445 / EN ISO 9444-2

For bigger sizes than those listed, the mechanical values shall be agreed at the time of enquiry and order. Under section 6.9 of the standard, EN ISO 18286 applies to individually rolled quarto plate.

SHH STEEL can supply 1.4563 hot rolled plate in standard sizes or cut to your drawing, after confirming availability with the mill; sheet and strip have to be agreed separately.

Surface finishes for EN 10088-2 X1NiCrMoCu31-27-4 plate

Surface finish is ordered by the process route symbols of EN 10088-2 Table 6; trade names from ASTM and JIS are shown for reference. Not every route is available for every grade, and the mill confirms which ones it can supply.

EN symbolDescriptionCommon trade nameUse for 1.4563
1DHot rolled, heat treated, pickledNo.1Usual standard finish for hot rolled plate
1EHot rolled, heat treated, mechanically descaled—Plate for further processing
1G / 1JHot rolled, ground or brushed—By agreement; grit or roughness to be specified

EN 10088-2 Table 7 lists this grade as hot rolled plate (P) only, so the cold rolled routes 2D, 2B and 2R are not part of the standard offer and would have to be agreed separately. The No.1 cross-reference follows worldstainless and IMOA comparison tables. The Euro Inox tables give no polishability rating for 1.4563.

1.4563 equivalent grades: ASTM, GB and JIS cross-reference

The 1.4563 Alloy 28 relationship is the key cross-reference: the usual 1.4563 equivalent, and the answer to most N08028 equivalent enquiries, is UNS N08028 in ASTM B709 and ASME SB-709.

SystemNearest gradeComment
EN / ISOX1NiCrMoCu31-27-4 / 1.4563Reference grade
ASTM / ASMEUNS N08028 (ASTM B709 / ASME SB-709)Close; Cu 0.6 – 1.4 %, Ni 30.0 – 34.0 %
China (GB)No GB/T 4237 plate grade—
Japan (JIS)No direct SUS grade—

N08028 is not listed in ASTM A240, so an order for “A240 N08028” should be corrected to ASTM B709 at the enquiry stage. Because EN 10088-2 is tighter than B709 on most elements, a 1.4563 heat with copper up to 1.40 % normally meets both.

1.4563 vs 1.4539 and 1.4529

On 1.4563 vs 1.4539: 1.4563 has more chromium (26.0 – 28.0 % against 19.0 – 21.0 %) and nickel (30.0 – 32.0 % against 24.0 – 26.0 %), less molybdenum (3.0 – 4.0 % against 4.0 – 5.0 %) and the same plate proof strength of 220 MPa, but EN 10088-2 lists it as plate only, while EN 10088-2 1.4539 plate is also listed as strip and sheet. Compared with EN 10088-2 1.4529 plate, it has less molybdenum and no nitrogen addition, and a lower proof strength (220 against 300 MPa).

Applications of 1.4563 austenitic plate

Typical applications of 1.4563 plate listed in the Euro Inox fabrication tables include:

  • Heat exchangers in contact with sulphuric acid contaminated by chlorides and fluorides
  • Heat exchangers in phosphoric acid service
  • Pipes and equipment in the oil and gas industry
  • Process equipment where pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking must be avoided

For pressure equipment, 1.4563 plate is ordered to EN 10028-7; for other uses, EN 10088-2 applies.

Alleima’s Sanicro 28 datasheet lists approvals including NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 for its product; such approvals belong to the producer’s material and have to be agreed separately for a given order. SHH STEEL can advise when 1.4539 or a nickel alloy should be compared.

Common buyer concerns and our solutions

For 1.4563 the main risks are lower-nickel material supplied instead, copper above 1.40 % on ASTM dual-certified orders, ordering to the wrong ASTM specification, and the plate-only listing in EN 10088-2.

ConcernWhat Usually HappensHow SHH STEEL Handles It
Wrong alloy1.4539 supplied as 1.4563.Cr and Ni checked by analysis.
Dual certificationCu above 1.40 % fails N08028.Copper checked against both standards.
Wrong ASTM specA240 named for N08028.Order corrected to ASTM B709.
Sheet requestedNot listed in Table 7 below plate.Strip or sheet agreed separately.
AvailabilitySpecial grade not in stock.Mill campaign confirmed at enquiry.

None of these steps is complicated, but they need to be agreed at the start. When you send an enquiry, tell us which of these points matters most to you, and the order will be built around it.

Testing, certificates and lead time at SHH STEEL

Every 1.4563 order is supported by documents and checks that make the material traceable to the heat:

  • Cast analysis with chromium, nickel, molybdenum and copper checked
  • Tensile test (transverse) to Table 7
  • Impact test for plate over 10 mm when agreed
  • Intergranular corrosion test to EN ISO 3651-2 when agreed
  • Thickness, flatness and surface inspection
  • Additional checks through our third-party testing service: PMI, dimensional, flatness and surface inspection

If the order does not name an inspection document, EN 10088-2 requires only a test report 2.2. Because this is rarely enough for acid plant, heat exchanger and oil and gas equipment or export work, SHH STEEL supplies an EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate as standard and a 3.2 certificate when an independent inspector (TUV, ABS, BV, DNV, CCS or an agency you nominate) witnesses testing and countersigns the document.

Ordering example and lead time

Following the pattern of the example in EN 10088-2, a typical order line would read: 4 plates, 10 mm × 1 500 mm × 6 000 mm, EN ISO 18286, EN 10088-2, steel X1NiCrMoCu31-27-4 (1.4563), process route 1D, inspection certificate 3.1 to EN 10204. Mill production lead time is generally 30 – 40 days from order confirmation, depending on the rolling schedule, the size and the tests requested; because 1.4563 is a special grade, the campaign date should be confirmed at enquiry. Consolidated small lots follow the same mill schedule, and we send progress updates at rolling, testing and packing.

FAQ

What is 1.4563 stainless steel equivalent to?
The usual equivalent is UNS N08028, often called Alloy 28. Because of its nickel content, N08028 plate is covered by ASTM B709 and ASME SB-709, not by ASTM A240. Chromium (26.0 – 28.0 %) and molybdenum (3.0 – 4.0 %) are the same in both standards. EN 10088-2 is tighter on carbon (0.020 % against 0.030 %), nickel (30.0 – 32.0 % against 30.0 – 34.0 %), silicon, manganese and sulphur, while ASTM B709 limits copper to 0.6 – 1.4 % against 0.70 – 1.50 %. A heat with copper of 0.70 – 1.40 % can therefore be dual certified. There is no matching JIS SUS or GB/T 4237 plate grade. The composition is also sold as Sanicro 28, an Alleima trademark. SHH STEEL checks these limits at the order stage.
What is the chemical composition of 1.4563?
EN 10088-2:2014 Table 1 lists 1.4563 among the special grades with a cast analysis of maximum 0.020 % carbon, 0.70 % silicon, 2.00 % manganese, 0.030 % phosphorus, 0.010 % sulphur and 0.10 % nitrogen, with 26.0 – 28.0 % chromium, 3.0 – 4.0 % molybdenum, 30.0 – 32.0 % nickel and 0.70 – 1.50 % copper. If a product analysis is agreed, Table 5 allows + 0.005 % on carbon, ± 0.25 % on chromium, ± 0.10 % on molybdenum, ± 0.20 % on nickel and up to ± 0.10 % on copper, so nickel may read 29.80 – 32.20 %. Chromium and nickel are the defining elements. SHH STEEL checks them on every mill certificate, together with copper for dual-certified orders, and can arrange independent analysis.
What are the mechanical properties of 1.4563 plate?
EN 10088-2:2014 Table 7 lists 1.4563 only as hot rolled plate up to 75 mm in the solution annealed condition. It needs a minimum 0.2 % proof strength of 220 MPa, a minimum 1 % proof strength of 260 MPa for guidance, a tensile strength of 500 – 700 MPa and at least 40 % elongation. For plate over 10 mm, impact energy is at least 100 J longitudinal or 60 J transverse. Table 12 gives minimum proof strengths up to 550 °C, for example 150 MPa Rp0.2 at 300 °C. ASTM B709-22 requires at least 214 MPa yield strength, 500 MPa tensile strength and 40 % elongation for N08028 plate, so the EN values are slightly stricter. SHH STEEL can arrange witnessed tensile and impact tests for 3.2 certificates.
What is the difference between 1.4563 and 1.4539?
Both are low-carbon, high-nickel austenitic grades with molybdenum and copper, rated “yes” for intergranular corrosion after sensitization in EN 10088-2 Table 7. 1.4563 has more chromium (26.0 – 28.0 % against 19.0 – 21.0 %) and nickel (30.0 – 32.0 % against 24.0 – 26.0 %), but less molybdenum (3.0 – 4.0 % against 4.0 – 5.0 %). Plate proof strength is 220 MPa for both. 1.4539 is a standard grade listed as strip, sheet and plate, while 1.4563 is a special grade listed as plate only. The Euro Inox tables list 1.4563 for acids contaminated by chlorides and fluorides, and name nickel-alloy fillers for it, and 1.4539 is the more widely stocked of the two. SHH STEEL can quote both side by side for a given acid duty.
Can 1.4563 be welded?
Yes. 1.4563 is weldable by the common processes. The Euro Inox fabrication tables rate TIG, MIG, manual metal arc and resistance welding as suitable, and list the nickel-alloy fillers 2.4621, 2.4653 and 2.4656 rather than a matching stainless filler. These fillers are more highly alloyed than the plate, which helps the weld keep the corrosion resistance of the base metal. EN 10088-2 Table 7 rates 1.4563 resistant to intergranular corrosion after sensitization. Because the grade is fully austenitic and highly alloyed, heat input should be kept under control. EN 10088-2 does not specify welding procedures, so the fabricator's qualified procedure governs filler choice, heat input and interpass temperature. SHH STEEL can supply test plates from the same heat for procedure qualification, together with the production certificates.
What is the lead time and minimum order for 1.4563 plate?
Mill production lead time is usually 30 – 40 days from order confirmation, depending on the rolling schedule, the thickness and the tests required. EN 10088-2 lists 1.4563 as a special grade, meaning special use and/or limited availability, and as hot rolled plate only. It needs a high-nickel, high-chromium melt, so it is not usually held as stock, and the date and available sizes should be confirmed at enquiry. Mill minimum quantities for a dedicated rolling are often higher than a single project needs. SHH STEEL consolidates several customer orders into one mill campaign, which makes lots of 1 – 5 t practical. For larger tonnages, a buyer can contract directly with a suitable mill, with SHH STEEL assisting for a modest service fee.
