EN 10088-2 X2CrNi19-11 1.4306 Stainless Steel Plate
1.4306 stainless steel plate: product overview and SHH STEEL sourcing
EN 10088-2 X2CrNi19-11 1.4306 stainless steel plate is an austenitic flat product supplied to EN 10088-2, the European standard for stainless steel sheet, plate and strip for general purposes. X2CrNi19-11 contains no more than 0.030 % carbon, 18.0 – 20.0 % chromium and 10.0 – 12.0 % nickel. It is the higher-nickel, higher-chromium alternative to 1.4307: the extra nickel makes the austenite more stable, which suits heavy cold forming and multiple drawing operations. EN 10088-2 Table 7 rates it resistant to intergranular corrosion both as delivered and when sensitized. The standard lists 1.4306 as cold rolled strip up to 8 mm, continuously hot rolled strip up to 13.5 mm and hot rolled plate up to 75 mm, all solution annealed.
SHH STEEL works as a steel sourcing partner with long-term relationships with Chinese stainless mills that roll austenitic CrNi hot rolled plate, coil and cold rolled sheet. For large tonnages, the buyer can contract directly with a suitable mill, with SHH STEEL assisting for a modest service fee and handling follow-up and documents. For small orders we consolidate demand, so that 1 – 5 t lots are placed against genuine mill production instead of stock of unknown origin. Each shipment can be released after third-party inspection by TUV, ABS, BV, DNV, CCS or an agency the buyer nominates, and payment by TT or LC is accepted. The rest of this page covers the technical side of EN 10088-2 1.4306 and the steps we take so that the sheet that arrives is the sheet that was ordered.
The table below lists the concerns buyers raise most often when sourcing EN 10088-2 X2CrNi19-11 sheet and plate from China, and how SHH STEEL deals with each of them.
| Buyer Concern | SHH STEEL Solution |
|---|---|
| Fake material or certificates | 1.4306 may be replaced by cheaper 1.4307 or 1.4301; nickel is checked by XRF or OES against the 10.0 % minimum, and carbon by spark OES. Partner laboratories handle chemical analysis, tensile, impact and IGC testing, and 3.2 certificates with third-party witness are available. |
| Unsafe deposit | Payment by TT, LC or a TT + LC combination. For large equipment programmes the buyer can contract directly with the mill, with SHH STEEL assisting for a small service fee. |
| Quantity below mill minimum | 1.4306 may be rolled less often than 1.4307, so mills may set higher minimums. SHH STEEL consolidates orders so 1 – 5 t lots can join a mill rolling campaign. |
| Delivery delays | A dedicated person follows up the delivery schedule with the mill, including melting to the higher nickel range, and reports progress at rolling, annealing, testing and packing. |
| Fabrication needs | Our workshop provides cutting, sawing, slitting and bending, so 1.4306 plate and sheet can arrive as blanks ready for forming or welding. |
EN 10088-2 vs EN 10028-7 and ASTM A240: standard selection for X2CrNi19-11 plate
1.4306 is usually matched to UNS S30403, Type 304L, in ASTM A240 (see ASTM A240 Type 304L sheet and plate). For pressure equipment it is ordered to EN 10028-7; see EN 10028-7 1.4306 pressure vessel plate.
| Item | EN 10088-2 1.4306 | EN 10088-2 1.4307 | ASTM A240 S30403 (304L) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon | ≤ 0.030 % | ≤ 0.030 % | ≤ 0.030 % |
| Silicon | ≤ 1.00 % | ≤ 1.00 % | ≤ 0.75 % |
| Chromium | 18.0 – 20.0 % | 17.5 – 19.5 % | 18.0 – 20.0 % |
| Nickel | 10.0 – 12.0 % | 8.0 – 10.5 % | 8.0 – 12.0 % |
The 1.4306 chromium and nickel ranges sit inside the ASTM A240-22 limits for 304L, so a heat with silicon at most 0.75 % can meet both. It also falls inside the JIS SUS304L ranges. SHH STEEL checks silicon and sulphur when a buyer needs dual certification.
1.4306 is also listed in EN 10028-7:2016 for pressure purposes, as is 1.4307 (EN 10028-7 1.4307 pressure vessel plate). That standard may set its own test and property requirements, which we have not reproduced here.

Edition note: the values on this page are taken from EN 10088-2:2014. A revised edition (EN 10088-2:2024) has since been published. If your contract names the newer edition, SHH STEEL checks the order against that text before production, and any difference is raised at the quotation stage rather than after rolling.
1.4306 chemical composition: heat analysis and product analysis tolerances
The 1.4306 chemical composition below is the cast (heat) analysis from EN 10088-2:2014 Table 1. Values are percentages by mass; a single figure is a maximum.
| C | Si | Mn | P | S | Cr | Ni | N |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.030 | 1.00 | 2.00 | 0.045 | 0.015 | 18.0 – 20.0 | 10.0 – 12.0 | 0.10 |
The 10.0 – 12.0 % nickel range is the defining feature of 1.4306. Footnote b to Table 1 permits controlled sulphur ranges: 0.015 – 0.030 % for machinability, 0.008 – 0.015 % for weldability, and 0.015 % max. for polishability. SHH STEEL checks carbon and nickel on every certificate as part of the 1.4306 chemical composition review.
Product analysis tolerances (EN 10088-2 Table 5)
A product analysis is a check made on the delivered sheet. It is not mandatory under EN 10088-2; it is carried out when agreed at the time of enquiry and order, and SHH STEEL can arrange it through a partner laboratory. The permissible tolerances on the cast limits are:
| Element | Cast limit, % | Permissible tolerance, % | Product analysis limit, % |
|---|---|---|---|
| C | ≤ 0.030 | + 0.005 | ≤ 0.035 |
| Si | ≤ 1.00 | + 0.05 | ≤ 1.05 |
| Mn | ≤ 2.00 | ± 0.04 | ≤ 2.04 |
| P | ≤ 0.045 | + 0.005 | ≤ 0.050 |
| S | ≤ 0.015 | + 0.003 | ≤ 0.018 |
| Cr | 18.0 – 20.0 | ± 0.20 | 17.80 – 20.20 |
| Ni | 10.0 – 12.0 | ± 0.10 (≤ 10.0) / ± 0.15 (> 10.0) | 9.90 – 12.15 |
| N | ≤ 0.10 | + 0.01 | ≤ 0.11 |
Where several product analyses are made on one cast, individual results may exceed the maximum or fall below the minimum, but not both for the same element. If a product analysis is required, it should be stated in the order together with the Table 5 tolerances.
1.4306 mechanical properties in the solution annealed condition
The 1.4306 mechanical properties below are the room-temperature values from EN 10088-2:2014 Table 7 for austenitic steels in the solution annealed condition. Test pieces are transverse; the A80 elongation applies below 3 mm and the proportional elongation A from 3 mm.
| Product form | Max. thickness, mm | Rp0.2 min, MPa | Rp1.0 min, MPa | Rm, MPa | A80 min, % (< 3 mm) | A min, % (≥ 3 mm) | KV2 min, J (> 10 mm, long. / tr.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| C – cold rolled strip | 8 | 220 | 250 | 520 – 700 | 45 | 45 | — |
| H – hot rolled strip | 13.5 | 200 | 240 | 520 – 700 | 45 | 45 | 100 / 60 |
| P – hot rolled plate | 75 | 200 | 240 | 500 – 700 | 45 | 45 | 100 / 60 |
Rp1.0 values are for guidance only. For continuously hot rolled products, 20 MPa higher minimum Rp0.2 and 10 MPa higher Rp1.0 may be agreed. For strip in rolling widths below 300 mm tested longitudinally, the minimum proof strength is reduced by 15 MPa and elongation by 5 % (constant gauge) or 2 % (proportional gauge). For bigger sizes than those listed, mechanical values are to be agreed.
Table 7 rates 1.4306 resistance to intergranular corrosion (EN ISO 3651-2) as “yes” in both the delivery and the sensitized condition. The values are identical to those for 1.4307.
Cold worked condition (process route 2H)
EN 10088-2 Tables 19 and 20 list no cold worked (2H) strength levels for 1.4306, so the grade is ordered in the solution annealed condition (+AT). Where a higher strength is needed, 1.4301 (all levels +C700 to +C1300) or the nitrogen-alloyed grades are the usual options.
Minimum proof strength at elevated temperature (EN 10088-2 Table 12, +AT)
| Temperature, °C | 100 | 150 | 200 | 250 | 300 | 350 | 400 | 450 | 500 | 550 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rp0.2 min, MPa | 147 | 132 | 118 | 108 | 100 | 94 | 89 | 85 | 81 | 80 |
| Rp1.0 min, MPa | 181 | 162 | 147 | 137 | 127 | 121 | 116 | 112 | 109 | 108 |
EN 10088-2 Table 12 gives values from 100 °C to 550 °C for this grade, for the solution annealed condition (+AT). They are minimum values for design and are not tested unless agreed.
Heat treatment of X2CrNi19-11: solution annealing
EN 10088-2 Table A.1 gives the following guideline temperatures for 1.4306:
| Operation | Temperature, °C | Cooling |
|---|---|---|
| Hot forming | 1 150 – 850 | Air |
| Solution annealing (+AT) | 1 000 – 1 100 | Water or air, sufficiently rapid to avoid intergranular corrosion |
The footnotes to Table A.1 state that with a continuous furnace the upper part of the range is usually preferred or even exceeded, and that the lower end of the range should be aimed at when the heat treatment is part of further processing, because otherwise the mechanical properties may be affected. Solution annealing may be omitted if hot working and cooling achieve the required mechanical properties and resistance to intergranular corrosion.
The Euro Inox tables give the same 1 000 – 1 100 °C range with cooling in air or water. Parts that are heavily cold formed may need intermediate annealing in that range; plate is delivered solution annealed (+AT).
Physical properties of 1.4306 austenitic plate
The values below are approximate reference figures for X2CrNi19-11 at room temperature, from the worldstainless “Tables of Technical Properties”, which follow EN 10088-1. They are suitable for design estimates and weight calculation; where a figure is critical, use EN 10088-1 itself.
| Property | Approximate value |
|---|---|
| Density | about 7.9 g/cm³ |
| Modulus of elasticity at 20 °C | about 200 GPa |
| Mean thermal expansion, 20 – 200 °C | 16.5 × 10⁻⁶ /K |
| Thermal conductivity at 20 °C | 15 W/(m·K) |
| Specific heat at 20 °C | about 500 J/(kg·K) |
| Electrical resistivity at 20 °C | 0.73 Ω·mm²/m |
| Magnetic behaviour | Not magnetisable in the solution annealed condition (EN 10088-1); slight magnetism can appear after cold working |
The EN 10088-1 table as reproduced by Häuselmann lists 1.4306 as not magnetisable, with a modulus of 200 GPa at 20 °C falling to 186 GPa at 200 °C. Thermal expansion is higher and conductivity lower than for ferritic grades, which matters for welding distortion.
Corrosion behaviour of X2CrNi19-11 1.4306
The Euro Inox fabrication tables describe 1.4306 as having good corrosion resistance, resistance to intergranular corrosion up to 350 °C and good resistance to nitric acid of higher concentration and temperature. They list it for equipment exposed to organic and fruit acids in the food and chemical industries. EN 10088-2 Table 7 rates its resistance to intergranular corrosion, tested to EN ISO 3651-2, as “yes” both in the delivery condition and in the sensitized condition.
| Environment | Typical behaviour |
|---|---|
| Organic and fruit acids (food industry) | Listed end use (Euro Inox) |
| Nitric acid | Good at higher concentration and temperature (Euro Inox) |
| Intergranular corrosion after welding | Resistant (Table 7: yes / yes) |
| Atmospheric and fresh water | Good |
| Chlorides and seawater | Limited; molybdenum grades are usually preferred |
Where the higher nickel is not needed, EN 10088-2 1.4307 plate is the lower-nickel low-carbon grade.
As EN 10088-2 notes, corrosion resistance depends strongly on the environment and cannot always be judged from laboratory tests, so experience with the grade in similar service should be used.
Weldability of 1.4306 austenitic plate: SHH STEEL workshop practice
1.4306 is readily weldable by the common arc and resistance processes, and its low carbon content keeps welds resistant to intergranular corrosion.
- The Euro Inox fabrication tables rate TIG/MIG, manual metal arc and resistance welding as suitable for 1.4306, and autogenous welding as suitable with restrictions.
- Filler materials listed are 1.4316 and 1.4551.
- No preheat is listed in those tables.
- EN 10088-2 does not specify welding procedures; these are published guidelines and general practice.
These points reflect industry practice for austenitic CrNi stainless steels rather than requirements of EN 10088-2, which does not specify welding procedures. In the SHH STEEL workshop, blanks and slit strips are cut with clean, burr-free edges so that seam, spot and tube welding run without edge preparation problems.
Forming, cold working and cutting of X2CrNi19-11 in the SHH STEEL workshop
The Euro Inox tables describe 1.4306 as suitable for heavy cold forming and multiple drawing. Its higher nickel content gives more stable austenite, so it work-hardens less than 1.4307 or 1.4301 in deep drawing.
Thick plate is cut by plasma or waterjet, and sheet by laser or shearing. Machining needs sharp tools and positive feeds to avoid work hardening at the cut.
We run our own workshop next to the warehouse, so 1.4306 hot rolled plate and X2CrNi19-11 plate blanks can be delivered cut to size, laser-cut or bent. Details are on our steel cutting services and bending and forming services pages.
1.4306 plate sizes, thickness limits and tolerances
1.4306 is listed in EN 10088-2 as cold rolled strip, continuously hot rolled strip and hot rolled plate.
| Product form | Thickness range covered by EN 10088-2 | Typical width supplied (by mill) | Tolerance standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| C – cold rolled strip and sheet | up to 8 mm | confirmed at enquiry | EN ISO 9445-1 / EN ISO 9445-2 |
| H – continuously hot rolled strip and plate | up to 13.5 mm | confirmed at enquiry | EN ISO 9444-2 |
| P – hot rolled (quarto) plate | up to 75 mm in Table 7; thicker plate by agreement | confirmed at enquiry | EN ISO 18286 |
EN 10088-2 Table 7 gives mechanical values for hot rolled plate up to 75 mm; for bigger sizes the mechanical values shall be agreed at the time of enquiry and order. Under section 6.9 of the standard, EN ISO 18286 normally applies only to individually rolled quarto plate, while continuously rolled material follows EN ISO 9444-2.
SHH STEEL can supply 1.4306 hot rolled plate and coil, and 1.4306 cold rolled sheet and coil, in standard sizes or cut to your drawing.
Surface finishes for EN 10088-2 X2CrNi19-11 plate
Surface finish is ordered by the process route symbols of EN 10088-2 Table 6; trade names from ASTM and JIS are shown for reference. Not every route is available for every grade, and the mill confirms which ones it can supply.
| EN symbol | Description | Common trade name | Use for 1.4306 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1D | Hot rolled, heat treated, pickled | No.1 | Hot rolled plate and strip; usual standard for most steel types |
| 1E | Hot rolled, heat treated, mechanically descaled | — | Plate for further processing |
| 2D | Cold rolled, heat treated, pickled | No.2D | Formed parts; good ductility |
| 2B | Cold rolled, heat treated, pickled, skin passed | 2B | General cold rolled supply |
| 2R | Cold rolled, bright annealed | BA | Visible parts; smoother and brighter than 2B |
| 1J / 2J | Brushed or dull polished | No.4 | Visible panels; grit or roughness to be agreed |
The No.1, No.4 and BA cross-references follow worldstainless and IMOA comparison tables; EN 10088-2 itself defines only the EN symbols, and not every route is available for every grade. Special finishes such as 1J and 2J apply to one surface unless otherwise agreed. For deep drawn parts, 2D or 2B cold rolled sheet is the usual starting finish.
1.4306 equivalent grades: ASTM, GB and JIS cross-reference
The usual 1.4306 equivalent, as for 1.4307, is UNS S30403, Type 304L; the answer to a 304L equivalent enquiry can be either EN grade.
| System | Nearest grade | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| EN / ISO | X2CrNi19-11 / 1.4306 | Reference grade |
| ASTM / ASME | ASME SA-240 304L plate (UNS S30403) | Close; Cr 18.0 – 20.0 %, Ni 8.0 – 12.0 %, Si ≤ 0.75 % |
| China (GB) | GB/T 4237 022Cr19Ni10 S30403 plate (GB/T 20878; GB/T 3280) | Close; C ≤ 0.030 %, Cr 18.00 – 20.00 %, Ni 8.00 – 12.00 % |
| Japan (JIS) | JIS G4305 SUS304L plate | Close; Ni 9.00 – 13.00 %, Cr 18.00 – 20.00 % |
Because 304L allows nickel from 8.0 %, a 304L certificate alone does not prove that the 1.4306 minimum of 10.0 % nickel is met; the actual analysis must be checked.
1.4306 vs 1.4307 and 1.4301
Compared with EN 10088-2 1.4307 plate, 1.4306 has about 2 % more nickel and 0.5 % more chromium; Table 7 gives the two grades identical mechanical properties and IGC ratings, so the choice depends on forming and corrosion needs rather than strength. Compared with EN 10088-2 1.4301 plate, it has lower carbon and keeps its resistance to intergranular corrosion after sensitization.
Applications of 1.4306 austenitic plate
Typical applications of 1.4306 plate and sheet listed in the Euro Inox fabrication tables include:
- Food industry equipment exposed to organic and fruit acids
- Chemical industry equipment
- Parts made by heavy cold forming
- Parts made by multiple drawing operations
- Equipment in nitric acid service
- Pressure parts (to EN 10028-7)
For pressure equipment, 1.4306 plate is ordered to EN 10028-7; for other uses, EN 10088-2 applies.
Buyers in food and chemical equipment often specify 1.4306 where the forming route or acid service favours the higher nickel. SHH STEEL can advise when 1.4307 is sufficient.
Common buyer concerns and our solutions
For 1.4306 the main risks are substitution with lower-nickel grades and certificates that only show 304L.
| Concern | What Usually Happens | How SHH STEEL Handles It |
|---|---|---|
| Grade substitution | 1.4307 with 8 – 10 % nickel is supplied. | Nickel is checked against the 10.0 % minimum. |
| 304L-only certificate | Certificate does not show EN limits. | Dual certification checked against both standards. |
| Wrong standard | EN 10088-2 plate is used where EN 10028-7 is required. | The governing standard is confirmed before ordering. |
| Forming cracks | Wrong finish or temper for deep drawing. | Solution annealed 2D or 2B specified and checked. |
| Plate tolerances | Thickness or flatness disputes. | EN ISO 18286 class and flatness are stated in the order. |
None of these steps is complicated, but they need to be agreed at the start. When you send an enquiry, tell us which of these points matters most to you, and the order will be built around it.
Testing, certificates and lead time at SHH STEEL
Every 1.4306 order is supported by documents and checks that make the material traceable to the heat:
- Cast analysis with carbon, chromium and nickel checked
- Tensile test (transverse) to Table 7
- Impact test for plate over 10 mm when agreed
- Intergranular corrosion test to EN ISO 3651-2 when agreed
- Thickness, flatness and surface inspection
- Additional checks through our third-party testing service: PMI, dimensional, flatness and surface inspection
If the order does not name an inspection document, EN 10088-2 requires only a test report 2.2. Because this is rarely enough for food and chemical equipment or export work, SHH STEEL supplies an EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate as standard and a 3.2 certificate when an independent inspector (TUV, ABS, BV, DNV, CCS or an agency you nominate) witnesses testing and countersigns the document.
Ordering example and lead time
Following the pattern of the example in EN 10088-2, a typical order line would read: 3 t cold rolled sheet, 2 mm × 1 250 mm × 2 500 mm, EN ISO 9445-2, EN 10088-2, steel X2CrNi19-11 (1.4306), process route 2B, inspection certificate 3.1 to EN 10204. Mill production lead time is generally 30 – 40 days from order confirmation, depending on the rolling schedule, the size and the tests requested; because 1.4306 may be rolled less often than 1.4307, campaign dates should be confirmed at enquiry. Consolidated small lots follow the same mill schedule, and we send progress updates at rolling, testing and packing.

FAQ
- What is 1.4306 stainless steel equivalent to?
- The usual equivalent is UNS S30403, Type 304L, in ASTM A240 and ASME SA-240. ASTM A240-22 allows 18.0 – 20.0 % chromium and 8.0 – 12.0 % nickel, and 1.4306, with 18.0 – 20.0 % chromium and 10.0 – 12.0 % nickel, sits inside those ranges; the remaining differences are silicon, where 304L allows only 0.75 %, and sulphur, where 1.4306 allows only 0.015 %. JIS SUS304L, with 9.00 – 13.00 % nickel, is also close, as is the Chinese grade 022Cr19Ni10, ISC code S30403. The point to watch is the reverse direction: a 304L heat may have as little as 8 % nickel, so it does not automatically meet 1.4306. SHH STEEL checks the actual analysis before accepting dual certification.
- What is the difference between 1.4306 and 1.4307?
- Both are low-carbon austenitic steels with no more than 0.030 % carbon, and both are matched to 304L. The difference is in nickel and chromium: 1.4306 has 10.0 – 12.0 % nickel and 18.0 – 20.0 % chromium, while 1.4307 has 8.0 – 10.5 % nickel and 17.5 – 19.5 % chromium. EN 10088-2 Table 7 gives them identical mechanical properties, and both are rated resistant to intergranular corrosion. The Euro Inox tables describe 1.4306 as suitable for heavy cold forming and multiple drawing, with good resistance to nitric acid. In practice 1.4307 has less nickel, which generally lowers the alloy cost, so 1.4306 is chosen when the forming route or the corrosion duty needs the extra nickel. SHH STEEL can advise on which grade fits.
- What are the mechanical properties of 1.4306 plate?
- EN 10088-2:2014 Table 7 gives values for the solution annealed condition. Hot rolled plate up to 75 mm needs a minimum 0.2 % proof strength of 200 MPa, a minimum 1 % proof strength of 240 MPa for guidance, a tensile strength of 500 – 700 MPa and at least 45 % elongation. Continuously hot rolled strip up to 13.5 mm has the same proof strengths with 520 – 700 MPa tensile strength, and cold rolled strip up to 8 mm needs 220 MPa minimum proof strength. For plate over 10 mm, impact energy is at least 100 J longitudinal or 60 J transverse. Table 12 gives minimum proof strengths up to 550 °C. SHH STEEL can arrange tensile and impact tests with third-party witness.
- Can 1.4306 be welded?
- Yes. 1.4306 is readily weldable, and because carbon is limited to 0.030 %, EN 10088-2 Table 7 rates it resistant to intergranular corrosion both as delivered and in the sensitized condition. The Euro Inox fabrication tables rate TIG, MIG, manual metal arc and resistance welding as suitable and autogenous welding as suitable with restrictions, list no preheat, and give filler materials 1.4316 and 1.4551. The same tables state resistance to intergranular corrosion up to 350 °C. EN 10088-2 itself does not specify welding procedures, so the fabricator's qualified procedure governs filler choice, heat input and interpass temperature. SHH STEEL can supply test plates from the same heat for procedure qualification, together with the certificate and analysis used for the production plates.
- What finishes and thicknesses are available for 1.4306?
- EN 10088-2 lists 1.4306 as cold rolled strip up to 8 mm, continuously hot rolled strip up to 13.5 mm and hot rolled quarto plate up to 75 mm, with mechanical values for bigger sizes agreed at order. Hot rolled plate is normally supplied as 1D, which is hot rolled, heat treated and pickled. Cold rolled sheet is available as 2D, 2B or bright annealed 2R, and brushed finishes similar to No.4 can be agreed as 1J or 2J. For deep drawing, 2D or 2B is the usual choice. Tolerances follow EN ISO 18286 for quarto plate, EN ISO 9444-2 for continuously rolled material and EN ISO 9445 for cold rolled. SHH STEEL confirms the mill's size range and finish options for 1.4306 at enquiry.
- What is the lead time and minimum order for 1.4306 plate and sheet?
- Mill production lead time is usually 30 – 40 days from order confirmation, depending on the rolling schedule, the thickness, the finish and the tests required. Because 1.4306 is melted to a higher nickel range and may be rolled less often than 1.4307, the campaign date should be confirmed at enquiry. Mill minimum quantities for a dedicated melt or rolling are often higher than a single equipment project needs. SHH STEEL consolidates several customer orders into one mill campaign, which makes lots of 1 – 5 t practical. For larger tonnages, a buyer can contract directly with a suitable mill, with SHH STEEL assisting for a modest service fee. Cutting, slitting or bending in our workshop normally adds a few days to the overall delivery.
