What is AISI 436 Stainless Steel?

As a professional China steel mill-Direct Supply and stainless steel plate supplier, SHH STEEL is pleased to present AISI 436 Stainless Steel Plate.

AISI 436 is widely known and searched under many different names and designations, including AISI 436, ASTM A240 Type 436, ASME SA240 Type 436, UNS S43600, 436 stainless steel, 436 stainless steel plate, SUS436, SUS436L and niobium-stabilized 434. All these names refer to the molybdenum-bearing ferritic grade with niobium (columbium) added for better formability.

AISI 436 is based on the same 16–18% chromium plus 0.75–1.25% molybdenum chemistry as A240 434. Niobium is added to stabilize carbon, reduce ridging during stamping, and improve drawn-part appearance. The grade remains magnetic, non-hardenable by conventional quench and temper, and is normally supplied annealed.

Typical uses include automotive exterior trim, wheel covers, stamped decorative parts and other formed components exposed to road salt. AISI 436 is chosen when 430 pitting resistance is not enough and 434 formability is not sufficient for deep or visible stampings.

SHH STEEL supplies AISI 436 as true China steel mill-Direct Supply, sourcing directly from major Chinese stainless steel mills. This model delivers competitive mill pricing, consistent quality, complete heat traceability and reliable delivery.

AISI 436 is frequently compared with A240 430, A240 434, A240 439, A240 444, A240 429 and a240 304. SHH STEEL provides technical support to help customers choose the most appropriate 400-series grade.

Chemical Composition

Typical Chemical Composition of AISI 436 (UNS S43600):

ElementContent (%)
Carbon (C)≤ 0.12
Silicon (Si)≤ 1.00
Manganese (Mn)≤ 1.00
Phosphorus (P)≤ 0.040
Sulfur (S)≤ 0.030
Chromium (Cr)16.00 – 18.00
Molybdenum (Mo)0.75 – 1.25
Niobium (Nb/Cb)5 × C min – 0.80 max
Nickel (Ni)≤ 0.75
Iron (Fe)Balance

The defining features of AISI 436 are molybdenum plus niobium in a 430-type ferritic base. Molybdenum improves pitting resistance. Niobium stabilizes carbon and improves stamping quality by reducing ridging. SHH STEEL carefully controls Mo and Nb so AISI 436 performs consistently in automotive trim applications.

Mechanical Properties

Annealed Condition (typical ASTM A240 values)

PropertyValue
Tensile Strength≥ 450 MPa (65 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2%)≥ 205 MPa (30 ksi)
Elongation (in 50 mm)≥ 22%
Hardness≤ 183 HBW / 89 HRBW

AISI 436 is supplied annealed, with strength similar to Type 430/434 and improved forming behavior because of niobium stabilization. It is magnetic and cannot be hardened by conventional quench and temper. SHH STEEL supplies AISI 436 meeting A240 mechanical limits.

Physical Properties
Density is approximately 7.70–7.80 g/cm³. Melting range is approximately 1425–1510°C.

AISI 444S44400Higher Mo + Ti/NbGoodWater tanks / higher chloride ferritic
AISI 304S30400AusteniticExcellentGeneral corrosion / outdoor service

AISI 436 is selected when A240 434 pitting resistance is needed and the part must be stamped with better surface quality. For welded high-temperature ferritic service, SHH STEEL recommends A240 439. For more severe ferritic chloride service, compare with A240 444.

Corrosion Resistance

AISI 436 offers good resistance to atmosphere, fresh water and household environments, plus improved pitting resistance versus 430 because of molybdenum. Niobium stabilization also helps welded and formed parts keep a more uniform corrosion appearance.

It is still a ferritic grade and is not equivalent to a240 304 or a240 316l in aggressive chloride or acid service. For water-heater tanks and more severe ferritic chloride duty, SHH STEEL recommends A240 444.

Weldability

AISI 436 can be welded by standard fusion methods. Matching 430/434 or 439-type filler metals are commonly used. Niobium stabilization improves resistance to intergranular attack compared with unstabilized 430/434.

Heat input should still be controlled to limit grain growth in the heat-affected zone. SHH STEEL recommends proper welding procedures and post-weld cleaning. For demanding welded ferritic service, A240 439 is often preferred.

Heat Treatment

AISI 436 is normally supplied in the annealed condition by SHH STEEL.

Annealing restores ductility after cold forming and optimizes corrosion resistance. The grade cannot be hardened by conventional quench and temper. SHH STEEL controls heat treatment so AISI 436 remains formable, polishable and suitable for automotive stampings.

Tolerances

Dimensional tolerances for AISI 436 Stainless Steel Plate supplied by SHH STEEL generally conform to ASTM A480 practices.

Typical available size range is thickness 0.3 mm – 50 mm, width up to 1500–2000 mm, and length up to 6000–12000 mm or coil/cut-to-length. SHH STEEL provides precise dimensional control and can support tighter tolerances when required.
